RAY LEONARD. Janks trained him in his early years and when he turned pro. Then Dundee would show up shortly before the fight and polish Ray.

People make it sound like Angelo was a teacher. He was NOT !! He didn't teach Carmen Basilio, Muhammad Ali, Pinklon Thomas, Michael Nunn, et.al. They were all known entities in boxing beforehand. The same with Lou Duva. Boxiana is an experiential sport. No human can break an [ in-ring ] habit with their personal appearance. Within a week or two, let alone extra-personal. Angelo was a motivator and facilitator. A good example is; no one can learn from Ali's fight films because he did not learn, rehearse and master boxing science to shield his healthfulness during combat. Secondly, his post-career neurological symptoms was due to ignoring the previous wisdom. Muhammad based his entire career on going with an emotional high of youthfulness and temporary fast reflexes. That is called pride. He left Archie Moore [ a Harvard equivalent boxing engineer ] for Angelo Dundee [ a Walmart grocery bagger--level --boxing mind ]. Let that sink in. After age 32, Mr. Ali began to use his body to shield himself in sparring and fights for the remainder of his career. That is not a ‘great’ fighter. A noble grade pugilist employs boxing science to offend and defend, healthfully. His erroneous decision to NOT learn incurred him career-long and post-career health complications. Parkinson’s is used by people who repeat rather than research. Muhammad’s career did not elevate boxing, in terms of, being a noble grade case study to propel future fighters healthfulness and highlight Fistiana as a noble grade gladiatorial science that should be a legitimate accredited univesitarian syllabi. His career is the exact opposite. He demoted boxing science. A Holy man creates, heals and ascends. Is unlimited within Christ limitlessness. Popularity, being champion for a season, merely inspiring people are not Holy attributes. Behaving The Word births pioneering Holy attributes. The Christ is The O N L Y One worthy of Praise. Not famous fighters, firefighters or astronauts, etc. --- ©️Coach Hilario 2021

I saw Johnny Gant - the boxer Janks mentions at 1:45 - stop Roland Pryor in May 1978 in the Washington DC area. Gant was tall, rangy, crafty and very experienced, with decision losses in his prime only against top guys like Esteban De Jesus and Hedgemon Lewis. And Pryor was no pushover, but after the KO Gant crowed that he "spanked him like a baby." 😆 When Ray Leonard dominated Gant in 1979 I knew he was ready to win the title from anyone. Gant died last month, November 2021, from ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease. Reportedly he was a descendant of the great Joe Gans, although I don't know whether that was ever confirmed. RIP, Johnny Gant, and thanks for the clip of Janks Morton being interviewed.

This is an important interview. Too many so called expert fans think Angelo Dundee was the main man. Dave Jacobs and Jenks Morton taught Ray how to fight. Most of Angelo’s champions were developed BEFORE he started with them. Look it up Basilio Napoles Rodrigues Leonard Foreman The list goes on. He was a great motivator and very nice man but not great trainer.

Dundee was more of a strategist than a trainer, and once you know how to fight you need a man in your corner that sees what needs to be done in real time.

@@megsmith596 I agree. And Leonard and his team were wise to use him. He knew the right people and knew the way around the corrupt world of boxing. He matched Ray tough early on. Angelo did a great job of guiding his career. However it’s a mistake to put him the class with Doc Robb, Ray Arcel, Whitey Bimstein, Harry Wiley, Eddie Futch, Freddy Brown and many others. Those guys could mold a fighter from the ground up.

Trouble is most judges get swayed by stuff like knock downs or if the fighter is shaken. I actually think Ray won that fight but once he got shaken I knew the judges will give it to him. Certain fighters have that privilege. All they have to do is shake you or drop you once and the judges use that S an excuse. Pacquiao is another example that’s what I thought would happen hints Mayweather. All Pacquiao needed to do is shake or drop Mayweather once Nd he’d have been given the fight.

Janks not telling the whole story about the 2nd fight. Who would want to fight his biggest rival, when they were at 50%? Especially losing the 1st fight the way he did? Wouldn't any true champ want to beat his biggest rival at his best? Then he did it to Hagler and tried to do it to Hearns. Ray's career will always show he cherry picked and bought people off. He will never be a top 10 all time great because of it.

@@blueray7176 best ever top 10 lb for lb. To achieve that rating, a fighter has to accomplish it over a vast amounts of fights, not a few and the rest cherry picked after retirement was over. Ray was very good for a short period, after he beat an underwhelming Duran in their 2nd fight, he beat Hearns, but it wasn't a convincing win. Ray won mostly because Hearns ran out of gas. Hearns weighed in 2 lbs under the weight limit the morning of the fight, how does that happen? Hearns was ahead on all cards. After that, Ray waited until everyone got old and made a lot of money. Ray had 3 'mock fights' prior to Hagler. He paid good fighters to recreate a real fight. Even had the ring entrances and all. Hagler's legs were gone.
