"Dirty blonde/brunette" Brad is absolutely stunning!!!! I love whatever he is doing to his hair currently, and really hope he explains to us in a future video. Personally I am a huge fan of the blurred line between blonde/brunette. "Mushroom blonde/ brunette" is what it is called I think? I am not a hair dresser.

I'm a cosmetologist and went to Beauty School back in '99 when they were still mainly doing cap highlights. Once or twice a year I do them on myself and always have good results! (I would never attempt full foils on myself- and the awesome thing about cap highlights is a consistent processing time because it's applied all at once.) Here are some tips from the years of practice I've had with this method: Wash and deep condition hair first, (I do it the night before.) and make sure it's bone dry to start. Apply a leave-in conditioner and/or serum from the mid shaft down; concentrating on the ends, and flatiron smooth to prevent snagging. I start with a part slightly off center because there's a row of holes going up the middle of the cap and the hair pulls out sparse along the part. Make sure hair is thoroughly brushed before putting the cap on. I like the Conair Pro Extend A Cap and metal hook (plastic hooks are garbage!)... pulling the hair through evenly takes practice. Go slow and do it gently, you can always pull out more. (And actually if you pull too much through, you can go underneath and pull the hair back under the cap using a rat tail comb.) After a strand of hair is pulled out through the hole, there's often a loop of hair that hasn't fully gotten past- use a comb as you go, and comb that loop out before grabbing for more hair- sometimes the loop of hair doesn't seem like alot, but it is. I stagger and pull more hair through every other hole so it doesn't come out looking like spaghetti. I usually pull it out heavier around the face, and I make extra holes in between, especially around the hair line. Sometimes I do every other hole (or starting that way just below the crown/using all the holes on top). I usually take it down to the occipital in back (but once in a while I go all the way down) and pull out in a pattern that angles towards the face up front- this looks especially amazing with an a-line bob! (I use a 3 way mirror for the sides.) Doing the back is tedious as hell and requires the use of a hand mirror, alot of self talk, and listening to music!!! I start at the top, and work my way down, one row at a time. I clip the hair up and out of the way with each row. It takes longer, but I have less tangles and snags with this method. Always look out for strands that got pulled through other holes- sometimes you'll find an open hole that's lost it's hair, so check row by row and make sure it's even. When finished, grasp sections side by side to make sure what's been pulled will give a balanced result; adjust if needed... The hair left underneath, I put into a low ponytail, wind up like a snail, clip, and tuck under the plastic flap in the back (Extend A Cap)... Almost always, instead of full on bleaching, I make a color remover (or "soap cap") formula because it's more gentle. I mostly use 10 volume developer because I have alot of fine hair that's always porous and soaks up color like a sponge. The lower volume developer allows me more time to get a thorough application. Sometimes I use an accent color instead of lightener. (Orange on Auburn, or Melon on Blonde...) Sometimes I go for a balayage effect and paint on the color or lightener halfway down. I've also used a cap for lowlights, or adding ash to tone down red. Just remember to think of the pre punched holes more as a guide. You don't have to use all of them and with the same amount of hair! Try to keep the color or lightener off the openings, use a formula as thick as possible, don't press on the cap, and make sure hair is fully dry- this prevents bleeding, or "saturn rings" as they were called in school. I was taught to rinse with the cap still on- just work quickly so all that water mixed with lightener doesn't seep onto the other hair. Apply lots of conditioner after a semi decent rinse and pull the cap off. Then you can rinse for real, shampoo and condition. Caps are versatile as hell if you give them a chance!! They're an inexpensive way to add some dimension to all over color; or downplay something like a dark band, (from a grown out root smudge ), an over saturated mid shaft, or ends that are murky or overly bright. They yield professional results, and all for under $20 if used with patience, care, and consideration.

Some tips if you’re doing this at home: start from the top and work your way down when plucking out hair, otherwise you will start pulling hair out that has already been taken out below it causing massive tangling. Brush the hair once you’re done plucking to make sure any “loops” are brushed out. To take off the cap after colouring easier or if your hair is delicate, rinse your hair with the cap still on then take it off and wash properly. It should just slide off with ease! I’ve done my hair this way successfully quite a few times.

I 100% agree with starting from the top and also rinsing the hair before removing the cap. My hairdresser has been using a cap to highlight my hair for many, many years. He always started at the top and also rinsed it off before taking it off. I have very short hair and he always cut my hair before using the cap, that way you get much closer to the scalp and it's easier to pull the hair through anyway. I love the results I have always gotten with him using the cap and I've never allowed anyone to use foil for my highlights, ever! There is just so much more random, beautiful color with a cap. The key is to never let it go too long before highlighting it again. He always used Blondor Multi Power Lightener which is very easy on the hair and provided multiple different colors instead of just one or two shades. Each time I get it highlighted it just keeps adding different color. He has never used anything other than Blondor on my hair all these years and I've never once had any damage to my hair. Sadly my hairstylist and really good friend since childhood passed away suddenly in Nov. I've not found another hairstylist yet and not sure they will want to use the cap or the brand of highlighter I love. But, I need to find one soon!

I grew up with my grandmother having a beauty shop in her house. The cap highlighting was the thing . It’s how I’ve done my hair for years. I just can’t afford to have it highlighted every few months. The trick, I’ve learned is moderation. Tiny strands not chunks. And when I do get my hair cut at the salon, she always said I did an amazing job. Practice makes perfect. Lol

My sisters and I been cap highlighting at home for almost 10 years and I have three pro tips to make it flawless. 1. Use a latex cap if you are not allergic. These are more thin and will keep it close to the scalp. If it doesn’t have holes the better cause it prevents the bleach from passing out the cap. 2. Use a thin crochet needle to take the hair out. To make thin sections just insert the needle in a 45 degree angle from the head without doing a swirl. If you swirl the needle you’ll end up with chunky highlights. It’s like stabbing but don’t hurt yourself! 3. When you finish the sectioning throughout the head, comb the hair that is out. Make sure that the cap is the closest to the scalp as possible. Give it a like so Brad can see it!

PRO-CAP DISSERTATION:💁🏼‍♀️ It’s strange to me that it’s strange to this younger generation to use a cap for highlights.🤨 I’ve been highlighting my own hair for over 40 years & mostly use a cap! I went to beauty school in the 80’s so it was definitely the norm to use highlighting caps. However I’ve also had long hair most of my life like mid back to waist length so the type of cap matters for long hair! The tight rubber caps are a big painful NO for long hair! The rubber is too tight & the long hair just tangles up under the cap every pull until you can’t even get any hair out. It is brutally painful bc the long hair mats up way too bad underneath. The foam cap is most comfortable for long hair. The hair slides through with ease. But I avoided the foam cap back in the day before dark roots were in style because the thickness of the foam made it impossible to get highlights close to the scalp. Now with a root smudge it would be fine to use a foam cap. I still usually just use the same plastic cap as in the video so it’s not too tight, is thin & loose & close to the scalp. As for control of highlight placement: Yes you can control it with a cap once you learn the skills of pulling through the cap! It’s just like to me foils seem too streaky & tedious with less control because of the time differentiation of applying the bleach meaning it takes too darn long to pick out foil pieces & get the volume of bleach equalized to the variable in processing time…that would drive me crazy! So basically, with the cap you learn that it matters how the hair lays under the caps to where you want to place the highlights. Center part with hair straight down around the head & slightly back around face is best on long hair. But even before I put the cap on, with long hair, I make sure hair is well conditioned, dry, then very straight flat ironed bc the more slick & straight the hair is the easier it is for it to slide through when you pull it eliminating the snagging looping & pain! Next you learn that you can also adjust placement by how deep you dig with the needle…I usually let the needle just touch the scalp then pull it up at an angle which is the same direction on one side then opposite on the other side. And if the needle poke is painful you’re doing it wrong! No! You’re not supposed to stab the person in the scalp with the needle! Go in with the needle at an angle to pop the plastic then tap the scalp, & grab the hair at an angle using the underside of the cap to press the needle up & out. Then you learn where to pull face framing pieces by how you laid the hair under the cap. You should see the hairline & pull money pieces on sides of the part. You also learn to get variation by pulling more where you want more color! The pre made holes & circles are given as a grid you learn to use for placement & you can also make your own hole wherever you want a highlight. You also learn that you do not have to pull hair through using the entire cap every time. For my hair sometimes I only pull the crown & around my face hairline. Or I pull most at crown & around hairline but sparsely in the lower back. You also don’t have to just slap bleach all over at the same time. Like since I always have highlights on the ends I do the roots & mid strands first then pull the bleach through ends at the last few minutes. You can also use color variations. As for hole bleed through it is avoided by 1. Don’t dig in the hole to make it any bigger than the needle & 2. Use bleach mixture that is thick like cake icing & it won’t be liquid enough to seep into the holes. Finally, I almost fainted when you pulled the cap off with bleach still on the hair! If that had been a human she surely would have punched you from the pain & you risked bad hair breakage! Lol Always shampoo first with the cap On! For long hair I leave the shampoo ON to remove the cap & it slides right off nicely~pain & tangle free! So now that root smudge & root tap is in style cap highlighting is the best way to go! I have long layers in the crown, I pull heavily in the crown & around my face, apply bleach to roots & mid strands first, then through the ends, with shampoo on, remove cap, shampoo & condition well, rinse comb out then root smudge, rinse & done! No toner even needed! Every 3-4th time I pull a few highlights in lower back as well. So there you have it! The cap is the winner hands down once you know how to use it! Y’all can wrestle with that foil business all day long but I’ll be done & onto something else while y’all still weaving & folding & mixing! Lol You’re welcome, from a highlighted 60’s baby! 🦋✌🏼☮️✌🏼🦋

Now as someone who has finally figured out the proper way to cap highlight and foil highlight ( it's super hard to foul highlight the back of my head) so I talked to a few hair dressers that have used the cap an know the ins an outs, so as soon. As I started following her instructions I started getting really nice results that even my boy ( who is a professional hair stylist) was pretty impressed with my results hehehe but with Brad's helpful tips in toners and bleach washes and what not, they have been stunning

Thank you so much for this video, I just lightened my hair for the very first time today, and while I only used a 20 developer and I do like the color, I VERY much learned that *I* will not be coordinated enough to be doing a babylight weave pick-out on myself anytime soon. Quick thing- If you get really shook about the amount the hook is pulling...its basically just a cotton doily crochet hook, they come in many, and MUCH smaller sizes than you get in the box kits. Look for steel needles, the bigger the number, the smaller the needle. Ive got one more ounce of bleach powder...might go grab my cap and hit it again... Thanks so much for the guidance Brad!!! You are literally the best thing elevating my standards on my own DIY dye jobs right now!! Wouldnt have tried lightening without you.

Okay, 1. I’m LIVING for this hair color on you! 😍 2. As a stylist, I still use a cap.. only on really short hair when it’s the best way to achieve the blonde they want! (Which is pretty rare. Lol) I personally feel like the highlights from a cap on long hair are too concentrated and there is no rhyme or reason to it! With foil you get to cocktail your foil pattern for each client!

As a professional that still does cap highlights sometimes, there are a few tricks. 1) use caps that are one layer and don’t have premade holes. 2) put the under a dryer for about 10 mins after you pull it through to help shrink the holes around the hair to help with bleed spots 3) use pro hooks, they are smaller and sharper so they don’t make as big of holes And don’t pull off the cap before rinsing out the hair!

Hi Brad! I'm a master cosmetologist that went to a very very old timey beauty school 100yrs ago. The way we learned to highlight was with a cap. (Thank Goodness for my first job where I had very skilled hairdressers teach me to foil.) A few things I remember, they used to make different sized needles that determined the amount of hair that came out. Even the biggest one was smaller that what came with the caps. We used to throw those away. You pop the bag through each hole at an angle to make it easier and not stab the client in the head and then redirect the needle downward. There is a technique that I probably cant explain where you kinda do sewing machine motion through a whole line and that makes it even faster. Those loops you spoke of were usually taken out by combing out the hair once you've finished. How we kept the bleach from bleeding was to mix it super thick. I hope I was helpful some. Its been forever since I used this technique one I learned to foil I never looked back.

I only ever get cap highlights, my amazing hair lady doesn't know how to do foils - they always look perfect when she does them. I have done them at home many, many times as well - using your technique...I tried foils once and it was a disaster, and I felt horrible for cheating on my sylist. Just wanted to say, I love the 'old school' way much better!

I was told to use a little powder to get better pulling thru the cap and the use a paddle brush to get some the loops that may be there pulled thru. I really only used caps on shorter pixie length hair. I had a client insisted on and all over color then cap highlights.

I’ve been capping my hair to bleach since I was 12, my Mawmaw was a amazing stylist and she always used them on my hair. So I just kept doing it. And I always had great results and it never failed me but I was also a light blonde to begin with.

I'm blond and my hair gets mousy over winter. I do cap highlighting. It looks awesome.i take the front tiny bit of the edge out before I start so you don't see where it starts. It looks awesome. People compliment my hair and I tell them I did it with a cap and they die laughing. How did it come out so good.

I think this is great if you have naturally curly hair. Normal highlights often disappear in naturally curly hair. On top of that it wouldn't look bad when it is slightly uneven section because your curls will cover it up.
