How do the race mechanics do it? They have to set up/repair bikes in such a short period of time while maintaining a high level of precision and quality of work. While pro riders often share their tips on how to ride faster, jump higher and be more precise, we rarely hear from the mechanics who keep the bikes running. Owen Coutts asks technicians he has previously worked with in the pits for their top tips on making even the toughest jobs easier.

Insert the 4mm allen kex into the calipper, pump out all pistons without any hazard of blown pistons, clean, lube with brake fluid/mineral oil and work them into the calipper ;-)

Use velcro tape to secure your fork to the bike when working with the headset, spacers or stem. Velcro tape can solve a lot of problems, like an extra hand.

Never thought I'd say this but protecting a brake hose with fuel line housing or something similar is such a good idea. I was out ring with a friend the other day when a rock got flung up and hit his bottom bracket area, suddenly he had no brakes. Low and behold his brake hose got cut from the huge stone/rock. Definitely recommending this hack to him!

Or just do a gopd job tp start with and ride your bike rite after you've freshly mounted the tube. That way, the sealant will seal any minor holes

There are.lot of different framesaver brands. Those adhesives look good and protecting your frame. AMS, Mucoff are easy to do at gome. For Dyedbro you need high temperatures to make the glue less solid.

As the rider I always hope my mechanic did me right when I go riding Then I hear some random bolts and washers clinging in my pocket ☠️ Seriously I didn't knew about the park tools disc thing I use a wooden stick and a piece of avid rotor since 2006 for the same purpose. I use Franklin baseball bat "gator" grip tape to protect chainstays and damping where it counts it's thicker and softer than the 3M thing, about 10$, 1.2 mm thick, one and a half inch by 40 rolls, useful format...

I always have high expectations from my mechanic. I am always angry if he make mistakes. We are a big family though. Me, the rider, I the mechanic, and Myself who cooks, does laundry and drives. 😂

Like you said dry fit your tires .Then fill sealant threw the stem. They always showing people pouring it in the tire before you hook it all the way to the rim. That method of pouring it in the tire does work so well when mounting tight tires like ice spiker pros in fact you kinda can't fill them that way you pretty much have fill them threw the stem.

My top tip is to learn how to fix things on a cheap bike - buy an old pub bike and practise on that - then when you come to spannering on your race machine, you are coming in with at least a modicum of experience. And if in doubt - got to you Local Bike Shop for advice!

Hardly top tips. Common sense surely? Never found the need to protect cable or hose outers - never had an issue with damage - and cable outers should be replaced occasionally anyway - not difficult or expensive. Also I've always bled my brakes properly so never needed to leave them over night (plus, if bubbles are small & haven't moved during your bleed then many wouldn't move without agitation anyway).

Sorry but clamping brake levers closed overnight doesn't do anything a proper bleed doesn't do. It's a temporary fix that lasts maybe 5 minutes.

What is the mechanics of what is happening when you clamp the brake levers closed overnight?
@YouFearMe
@YouFearMe 8 ай бұрын
@@bike2452 It moves around air bubbles to make it feel like a bleed, but it's just a temporary fix between bleeds.
@bike2452
@bike2452 8 ай бұрын
@@YouFearMe Can you elaborate on that? Where is the air bubble and where is it getting moved to? And what does keeping it closed over night do?
@avocette
@avocette 8 ай бұрын
I think Owen's tip applies on the finishing touches of a brake bleed. One can sometimes not fully take all the small air bubbles out so after a brake bleed the spanners tilt the bike up incline, zip tie the brakes, and hope that by tomorrow the bubbles slowly made their way up to the lever end of the brake lines. As you release the lever, the brake fluid gets sucked back into the master cylinder and reservoir, carrying those last few bubbles with it and resulting in a pro-level snappy brake feel.
