There's a few heavy metal covers of the song on KZfaq that are pretty popular. I'm not typically into metal music but they sound really good. Whoever wrote them for some reason thought "you know what this song needs? It needs to be MORE intense!" lol

@@PlagueJ I know the weight something that holds man, video game music is near and dear to my heart but Soken was already pretty much the best in the business as a body of work and this is his masterpiece to me. Nier, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, many Final Fantasy's, the list goes on and on, but I don't feel this is recency bias and the AMOUNT of music he's composed is staggering. It's not one note either.

The most impressive part about this dude isn’t how fast he plays, or his technique. It’s the ear 👂 Dude knows exactly what’s going on just by listening to it. And knows the guitar so well he just sees and predicts the notes as the music is playing. That’s real talent. And is actually very rare, most super skilled musicians don’t have this

Soken style is always very respected by guitarist and orchestral nerds alike. I dont know enough about music writing but it crazy to me how his style can be covered in metal form so well. Where it feels like Uematsu does have music that does, but feels like classic piano covers work for most of his music.

Just so I'm clear, nobody can ever replace Uematsu. His music will always be the peak of Final Fantasy music. But Soken is a hell of a successor, and I feel like he definitely fills Uematsu's shoes really nicely and brings an amazing fresh take to Final Fantasy music.
