Hey y'all! Just a rough video showing the metronome I use the most and that I'll be using in my "Your First Year of Drum Lessons" video series. It's available on iTunes and Android, keeps good time, and has a plethora of features.

I've had this metronome for about 8 months but never really took advantage of all its features or dug in to fully understand what it can actually do. Thanks for a great tutorial video!

I'm very new to guitar and using Fender Play for lessons. This app was recommended to me by a friend who didn't explain how to use it. Penny you did an awesome job explaining this to someone whom had never heard of a metronome, let alone what it does. Thank you very much!!

The last update to the app on iOS was 6 years ago. Hoping EUM comes back with a refresh as it is a great tool. I was confused by the BPM vs Quarter note per Minute at first. In the case of the latter option, the 8th note will always remain constant. It will sound like the 5/8 is faster but, it's the same tempo really because it's tracking the eighth note. If you keep it at BPM the 5/8 really becomes twice as fast. Normally the eighth note stays constant in music when going from a quarter note based time signature to an eighth note based time signature.

For 13/8... Accent the first note then 3 5 7 9... mute notes in between.. the last three notes > 123... = count 》 1 2 3 4 5 123. Set bpm to 300. Try it in other time signatures!

Hi Penny. First, you did a great job explaining and demonstrating this metronome. What type of tablet are you using? I've never owned a tablet and I'm considering buying one. However, the only reason I would do so is for the metronome app. Both my desktop and laptop are HP and run on windows 10. I'm thinking about adding the free version on my old apple 6 phone. The screen is far too small for my old eyes but it would give me a feel for the app. As we get older the body starts to break down and I'm facing challenges that younger players probably don't have to deal with. My thumbs and forearms get very sore and I often have to take time off for them to recover. I've googled these issues and do the stretching exercises as well as using ice. It's the thumbs, especially my left one, that really bother me. If you have any insights please share. Again, thank you and keep on rockin'.
@PennyLarson
@PennyLarson 4 жыл бұрын
So for a tablet, I'd recommend the largest screen size you can afford. Apple and Samsung both make 12" tablets, and I wish I had one. I have three, two by Sony, and the one I'm using here by Huawei. The tablet market sort of died off as phones got bigger and more powerful. Most people don't really want tablets so they're aren't a lot of manufacturers left in the space so the choices are limited. As for pain ... I don't want to give much advice because "drummer, not doctor." Assuming there are no physical ailments causing problems and there is no injury and your aren't injuring yourself, my basic advice is always: stay relaxed and try to find the way in which your body wants to move. I haven't addressed it yet because it's not usually part of my early stuff with students, but have you researched the Moeller Method? That might change how your hand is moving enough to tamp down that stress and pain.
@basstoe5402
@basstoe5402 4 жыл бұрын
@@PennyLarson I didn't mean to put you on the spot and fully understand "drummer, not doctor." I've checked out a lot of different styles and I'm trying to find the one that suits me the best now. Gordy Knudtson has some good teaching videos and he talks about, as well as demonstrates, the Moeller Method. If memory serves, you did as well. I like it and should work on that style more than I do. I didn't realize that during The American Civil War the drummers rudiments were used as instructions to the troops until I started watching different videos about Moeller and his method. Thank you for your input and I am trying to stay relaxed and listen to my body. I'll catch myself starting to tense up, or drop me head, and immediately cool it.
@basstoe5402
@basstoe5402 4 жыл бұрын
Also, thank you for your input regarding tablets. I, too, think that the bigger the screen the better. I'll probably go with Samsung due the price point. I like Apple products but they are expensive. We'll see; I'll have to do some more research.
@PennyLarson

@@basstoe5402 I LOVE Gordy's videos. I will say, I find his version of the open/close technique to be pretty extreme: he really drops his whole hand when in the "open" position. Have you watched any of Bill Bachman's videos? He has some very interesting thoughts on grip in general and the Moeller in particular. The good thing/bad thing with technique is because there isn't "one right way," figuring out the "best" way for any given individual can be a bit of a challenge.

Is there any way to get the met to switch subdivisions automatically? I’ve been trying to find a way for it to play quarter notes for one bar, eighth notes the next bar, triplets the next bar and so on. If there is a way it would be super useful
@PennyLarson
@PennyLarson 2 жыл бұрын
I do not believe there is any automation at all in Pro Metronome. The app hasn't been updated in years, which is a shame, because as much as I still think it's the best basic metronome on both app stores, it could really benefit from some updating and expanded features. I haven't found a metronome that has the type of programmability that you describe. If you find one, please share it here. If you're on ios, I recommend you give PolyNome a try. I've never used it as I'm on Android, but PolyNome is so cool I almost bought an ios device so I could use it.

Do you n ow how to get a setlist to save the sun division of a song? I set the sun division, but can’t “save” the change or playlist. I can set it, set as new song but now it’s at the end and I can’t move it to the right spot. I start the metronome, it works, stop, start again, it’s back to original subdivision. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for making this video!!

Two ways: First, the paid version has triplet and shuffle settings in the subdivision menu. In the free version you'd need to set the time signature to 3/4 and mute the middle note.

Yep, when you're in the playlist window, the button to the left of the playlist name will open a "save as" window. Save it as a new name and there you go, new playlist. Is it possible to set more than one tempo on a "track"? I have song starting at a particular tempo and it changes later
@PennyLarson
@PennyLarson 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, it is not possible. The closest would be to have two adjacent tracks in the playlist with the different tempos needed, but that's an imperfect solution. Usually I think of that level of programmability to be more of a drum machine / sequencer type of thing. I'm not aware of a simple app that offers that level of programming (I'd love to find one).

What about the 'set list', stage mode etc... I have a set list but can't figure out how to edit the list (change songs on the list). Do you know?
@PennyLarson
@PennyLarson 2 жыл бұрын
I don't use the playlist function much. I believe "Stage Mode" has big buttons so it's easier to hit on stage. Once a song is on the list I don't think you can edit it, you'd have to delete and add a new song. To edit the playlist (move the songs around) click on the angled double arrow to the right of the Playlist title. I'm sorry to not have a more complete answer. Like I said, I don't use the playlist much.
