Eugene Laverty is a star of World Superbike, but he doesn’t ride the kind of superbike we are familiar with here at GCN! Although he's a pro motorbike racer, Eugene is also a big fan of pedal power. So, when Conor went to visit him in Portugal, he decided to put his skills on two wheels to the test, with three head-to-head challenges! How will Eugene fare without his motor?
Check out Conor and Eugene's ride on Komoot 👉 gcn.eu/EugeneKomoot

Eugene is spot on about the warning you get from motorcycle tyres compared to road bike tyres, when I first started group riding road bikes with friends, the two of us with motorcycle licences were the least trusting of grip levels from front 25c tyres at 2.5x the pressure we were used to.

feels like the moto is much safer if you discount the careless car drivers on the freeway. skinny roadbike tires can give out on a corner pretty easily.

I found the same distrust. Whats interesting is that on a mountain bike in dirt you can develop a similar type of progressive release and not the snap loss of grip that happens on a road bike. I think with ~25mm of rubber there is just no way for a tire to behave like a big bike or a car.

Pro motorcycle riders are outer worldly. Average person that has never been on even a 150hp 1 liter sports bike has no concept of these people. Supermen. Conor if you have the chance, hook up with Eugene on a motorcycle track and have him set you up on a 600cc sport bike for a lesson. You will love it and a lesson from a pro supersport rider would be invaluable.

Even a "small" 100hp bike is a big workout when going on a trackday. The acceleration, constant shift of weight and the g-forces really is hard work. 1 hour on my mtb is not that hard, sure my legs is sore and I'm tired, but 1 hour on my motorcycle at a trackday and i feel like i got a thorough beating.

Agreed, you don't suffer from close-passes on a motorbike, but other road users are the biggest danger to both. It's also scary to think about he consequences of a fall at 30 dressed in Lycra, vs. a fall at the same speed on a motorbike in armoured leather.

The best thing about bicycles is what is sometimes the worst - the exercise! After a fast ride on a motorcycle I'm full of adrenaline but with no outlet. It almost feels toxic. I almost always feel better after bicycle ride. If I could only ride one or the other for the rest of my life I'd choose bicycles.

Great Video Folks and huge respect to both protagonists !! I also came from Motorbike racing in my early twenties and had an hobby bike carreer afterwarde that still goes on now that I'm 54. As Eugene said there are quite some Motorbike racers out there who are quite serious about Roadbiking. In the UK I know that Scott Redding and Cal Crutchlow for example are. All the best to you all for the new season on whatever bikes you ride !! P.S.: interesting question to Motorbiker on a Roadbike imo: on Motorbikes the frontbrake is usually attached to the right handle bar. So I remember having it left seemed a bit odd to me when I swapped bikes at first but I decided to leave it there to get used to Roadbikes as they usually are equipped. Curious how other cycling Motorbikers handle this. Maybe a good qtn for a follow up vid with Eugene?

Nice video. I quit motorracing in 2008 and was already on a mountainbike for cardio training. Now I'm doing roadracing, mountainbiking, beach racing and zwifting. Very rewarding, but motorracing definitely shaped my senses and feel and some good habits like looking some much more ahead than most riders. Especially on technical trails it gives me more confidence.

really interesting that Eugene says he leans the road bike into the corner rather than the motorbike! For me it feels the exact other way, I transferred the "leaning/directing the body instead of the bike" approach from the motorcycle to the road bike and at least among my friends I'm known for being unmatchable at descending corners. And there are one or two decent Strava times too... However I'm not engaged in cycling races and also never rode a sports motorbike, although I would love too, so would be excited about other people's opinion on that here! For sure road bike tires are terrifying to save if they slip, luckily I always managed to not let that happen.

1) You got the lean angle wrong. What matters is the angle from the contact patch up to the combined centre of gravity of the bike AND the rider 2) As a motorcyclist myself (i own 4 motorcycles and 3 bicycles) I can say that speed is all relative. My road bike feels fast after riding my MTB, just as my VFR feels fast after riding my CB450S. My point is you can still get a sense of speed on a bicycle

I've stopped riding motorbikes about 4 years ago, entirely because of other road users being an unnecessary risk to me. Each year there are more cars, they keep getting bigger, and their drivers keep geting worse. They have their eyes on their phones rather than on the road and they're deafened by their sound system. Now a cyclist, I stick mostly to dedicated bike lanes in the city to commute to work, and get my fun away from the city either off road or on gravel roads with nearly zero traffic. So motorcycle racers like to keep their machines upright in the corners, uh, okay, but they do tend to lay them over like a pancake in every single corner, incredible. And for sure, different experiences, bicycles and motorcycles, yet there are similarities and one is screaming down a mountain on a bicycle and flying through the corners--or over the jumps and ruts on a mountain bike. And with either you have to be careful not to exceed conditions. And it was only for a year but in '79 in California, my Dad gave me free reign on his BMW R100RS, the first fully faired BMW sport bike and one of the first in the States as he had imported it from West Germany, and I was 19/20 that year and there were lots of days when I used that BMW for commuting--and that motorcycle was barely breathing in the fast lane--and rode my BMX bike for fun and conditioning. And it was simply two different thrills and kicks, tho' on the bicycle I never had any encounters with the California Highway Patrol, both of which were good, actually, turns out CHIPs were cool like the TV show.

I prefer a road bike rather than a motorbike because of the following reasons: 1. Freedom, which means you don't have to rely on outside power to travel and you can handle most of the mechanical issues by yourself on the road. 2. Survival rate during an accident. I experienced at least 3 serious accidents while I am cycling. 2 of them cracked my helmet, and the third one makes me stay home for about half a year. I think if I experience a similar accident on a motorcycle I will die for sure.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't professional cyclists in the 90's buy into the same cornering technique used by competitive motorcyclists? My guess is that cyclists found the technique to be more dangerous than necessary and dropped that practice fairly quickly. A motorcyclist will keep the bike upright as much as possible, offsetting his body in a corner, whereas the cyclist must stay in the saddle and bank the bike to get the most speed and traction.

Connor is the size of two regular sized human beings. I never thought there could be such a difference in size/height between two people side by side on bicycles.

When I was racing bicycles I bought a FZR 400RR. It definitely helped... get both.

A full day on track with one of these 200+ hp monsters is exhausting in a different way than a long bicycle ride. Every muscle in your body feels worked, your brain is fried from optimizing every lap and figuring out your lines. A fast canyon ride feels more similar: don't know if there's gravel or a parked car around that bend, can't go flat out. Scarier on the bicycle, for sure.

I assumed this would be Scott Reading or Cal Crutchlow. Honestly they all seem to be obsessed with cycling.

There is a video somewhere of Cal Crutchlow and Mark Cavendish riding each others bikes. Mark says Cal could join a pro team and Mark was very quick on the motorbike.

What scares me most about either form of two-wheeling are CARS! I've ridden and raced motorbikes, and still ride bicycles. Cars can wipe you out in a heartbeat, though obviously worse for bicycles.

After 30 years of ridng motorbikes I started riding a bicycle and I never felt so unsafe in traffic than on bicycle because you cannot flee a crazy driving cardriver with a bike, you are totally in his mercy to let you live.

Can you make your content inclusive and accessible by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning? it is sadly very hard to watch relying only on the auto captioning (Im Profoundly Deaf)

Eugene bike racer from Northern Ireland doesn't get any better. I would much prefer to ride my motorcycle at high speeds than race a bicycle. But then I do ride a Harley '🤣🤣🤣
