In the latest video of the microlecture series, Jason de Wilde explains how to perform accurate tempo mapping on Pro Tools. Tempo mapping is when you set the bar/beat grid of your digital audio workstation (DAW) to match a recorded performance. It is a useful technique when you have a recording that was not performed to a click or the performance varies in tempo and speed. Pro Tools bar/beat grid can be manually set according the performance.

The Bachelor of Music (Audio) is a thorough and complete study of sound engineering and music technology.
Major Studies
Combines three technology streams:
1. Audio
Focuses on the theoretical aspects of sound engineering including; acoustics, perception of hearing, digital audio, sampling, electronics and system design.
2. Recording
Focuses on the practical techniques of recording and mixing sound. Students undertake practical classes in AIM's numerous recording studios, completing their own recording projects in each of these units. Projects increase in complexity as students progress through the course.
3. Digital
Focuses on the software used in the field of sound and music production. All units are undertaken in the Digital Media lab with access to digital audio workstations.
Ensemble
In a small group setting, teamwork skills of collaboration and communication are developed as performance is focused on awareness, preparation andcommitment to common goals.
Associated Studies
Students select associated studies from a range of performance, production, management, media and technology units to either focus their music education or explore wider opportunities.
Academic Studies
All Bachelor of Music students undertake a series of Academic Studies units. These units cover theoretical and aural musicianship as well as historical and cultural studies of music. In the Foundation stages (1--2) of the degree, students cover a broad range of music styles and genres, including western art music and contemporary popular music. In the Industry stages (3--6) of the degree, students are able to focus their critical thinking in a variety of specialist areas including contemporary, jazz, baroque, classical, romantic, avant garde, music theatre, film, roots music, world music and latin music.
Q Recording Studios
With the best in digital and vintage analog production equipment, Q Studios is our state-of-the-art recording facility, custom designed and built into AIM's main campus. Recordings can be captured from the fully equipped studio spaces, from any control room in the facility, with video monitoring and the ability to record live performances.

Great video and great timing for me. I've just starting a project where we've imported audio from 50 songs, recorded 16 track analog in the late 80s. We're going to replace the drums using Drumtracker from Superior Drummer 3 and then remaster them entire project. The drummer had some tempo problems so converting the drums to MIDI and then fixing the performance is what they want to do. Again, timing of your video couldn't have been any better.

Thank you for learning some very useful tips. However, I would like to use Pro Tools to automatically retrieve the tempo of the track and input it into the project tempo map with just a few clicks, like the method used in Logic Pro. Isn’t this a feature that doesn’t exist in Pro Tools yet?

I will try this as soon as i can find where protools lost it's plug-ins folder that is holding the plug-in called "click" because I have nothing else better to do except to teach a pro tools program to map a path to it's program folders to find a saved program session file with and it's pre-saved saved presets. Then when I'm done I will program the inserts to save a path to it's own pre-saved presets per insert.

So in order to create a tempo map for a very rubato performance, would you need to identify beats down to the quarter or eight? Great video by the way! Thank you.
@jasondewilde
@jasondewilde 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly, you would need to increase the resolution of your grid to quarter and eighth notes. In practise, what I normally do is vary the resolution according to my needs. So, for the most part of the song, I might just identify every bar, but in parts where I really want something important to happen (like matching a MIDI loop to a performed part), I might identify further divisions of a bar. Hope that helps and thanks for the feedback. Cheers from Jase

That's GREAT sir, but what do you do when you identify beat ONE and the whole damn song jumps to the right and starts in the same damned place? Obviously this is happening to more people than I... so this video is missing something. VERY IMPORTANT at that... since I can't get past the VERY first minute of this tutorial with any useable data. thanks!

@PianoHandsOnFaiya
@PianoHandsOnFaiya 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mihindu, you probably already found the answer to this, but I ran into the same problem, when you're trying to do this with Midi, you have to make sure that your tracks are sample based and not tick based, click the little bottom left icon on the track that is a green metronome and change it to sample (the blue clock), this way it will work as shown in the video with midi tracks in pro tools, hope it helps!

@DepressedCapitalist
@DepressedCapitalist 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! I have a problem. I¿m trying to map a song using a bass track as reference since I don't have the luxury of having a drum pattern. Also, the performance tempo is shaky and the measure are uneven. Still, I need to create a mapping to incorporate Midi instruments, paste, delete or add measures. Any ideas how to do this? Been trying but the attacks are not always on one and it's hard to map. Also, for some reason, pro tools gives me very different tempos when i press Control+I. Any tips? Thanks mate. Cheers from Argentina.
@posmk6
@posmk6 3 жыл бұрын
If the attack is not on one, just set the value to what it should be on. 1/4 note push on the second bar = 1|4|000, 1/8 note push = 1|4|480 (960 ticks in a beat/2)
@KernEnergieThrash

I´m trying this method but Pro Tools keeps sendimg me this error message: "The Bar/Beat Marker could not be created, because they are either too close or too far apart from a neighboring Bar/Beat Marker to support a valid tempo." Any help?
@jasondewilde
@jasondewilde 9 жыл бұрын
KernEnergieThrash This error is occasionally created when you enter in the wrong values. Make sure you are entering the new number in the "Bar" field when you use Identify Beat. If you accidently enter a number into the "Beat" or "Tick" field, you can get the error message you are talking about. Hope that helps. Cheers. Jase

There has to be a faster way to do this.. In cakewalk, I only have to grab the audio track and drop it on the time-bar.. Melodyne internally will create a tempo map thru the entire project. You can even cut and paste it to another location and take the tempo map with it. Pro Tools has an easier way to do this, I saw it in a video last week. (Tho, I am using PT Studio V 2022.12

Avid should develop their software, Logic is getting better... Cheaper, doesn't require iLock, has a big sound library, integrated pitch correction, beat mapping is faster... When I'm using Pro Tools I feel I'm in 2000...

K... So why when ever I do this it moves all my clips...
@jasondewilde
@jasondewilde 8 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Eadie It may be because your tracks are "tick based" and not "sample based". In the video, if you look at the bottom left hand corner of the kick (where the name of the track is), you will see a blue icon. This designates what type positional reference the track is based on. In my case, it's "sample based". If your tracks have a green icon, it means they are "tick based". The upshot will be that if the tempo changes, the clips on tick based tracks may move. Generally, MIDI and instrument tracks are tick based, but audio tracks are sample based. Hope that helps.
