I felt the same and had mixed feelings, cause I'm an amateur one (it's only a hobby for me). The comparison between pro and amateur doesn't work cause the video doesn't explain in a clear way why they're are amateur by using a (non)professional camera (despite they show the results). I wonder if other amateur people feel ashamed instead of motivated to boost the performance behind the lens. Having a professional model doesn't help in this case, cause you have the feeling that the model is doing all the good work when it isn't true. The amateur photographers have the eye regarding composition, for example. It would be better if the model wouldn't have been a professional one, so you can see in a clear way how to give directions to the model and set the camera to avoid "amateur's" mistakes.

My apologies in advance for being nit picky, i do love you guys. But there seems to be a misconception of what amateur and professional means. Amateur doesn't necessarily mean beginner. It just means you're doing it for the love of it and not getting paid. Professional only means your exchanging services for money. Over all this was a great and fun video.
@MangoStreet
@MangoStreet 5 жыл бұрын
yeah, i’ve wanted to make a video for forever that is like five seconds long and it’s just a title screen asking how to know if you’re a professional or not. a closeup of a photographer and a voice asks “does your sole income come from photography” and the Photographer nods and then the voice is like “well, there yuh go.” and then it cuts to black. fin.

As a photographer - gear matters. Every now & then someone can capture an image so powerful that the technical aspects are meaningless. But unless u live in a war-torn, 3rd world country where stories basically live & capture themselves with any camera, then your creativity WILL be hindered by lack of gear (& subjects etc). There are sooo many instances where u just need better stuff. And dont get all high & mighty, ppl...most of these *great* photos would just be *good* without a mean post game. *BUT* u can have a million$ worth of gear - without an eye(artistic creativity, composition knowledge etc) then ur gear wont really matter. So, I agree & disagree with the vid. If they had this same challenge without the model then it would look a lot differently. Or if they did a challenge with 2 pro photographers(or even the 1 photographer), same model & environment, but with the 1DX & another with like a T3i then that would be a lot more interesting.

Pyrex Paslo: gear matters but not necessarily at all times. It really depends on what you’re using photography for. Gear does matter when your livelihood depends on it. Other than that, if it’s just your hobby, then pretty much any decent camera will do the job to achieve your creative vision. YMMV with the choice of lenses so that’s really up to you. I’d like to point out that someone was able to take a picture of the royal family using an iPhone SE which ended up being sought out and bought by media outlets for use. www.diyphotography.net/fan-snaps-photo-royal-family-iphone-ends-selling-around-world/

@jasonlangheine1295
@jasonlangheine1295 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly. So in the end, what the video really proves is that if you shoot natural light, slightly under-exposed, and use film presets, then literally anybody can make their photos look like that one super trendy aesthetic. This is not something we should be happy about. They proved skill doesn't matter. They specifically ruled out skill here with their amateur shooter and got results that are indistinguishable from their pro...and indistinguishable from 75% of wedding photogs in 2019.

I like you how you added the camera settings used in your photos from the last video. It's sad they're not there. Hope you can add them next time to your other videos. They really help me learn and gain some insight on how pros play with the iso, shutter speed and aperture. :)

I think this video would have been helpful if you said "this is what he did. This is what he should have done instead". Then again maybe that wasn't the point. Great video regardless:) I subed

Aside from ur awesome content, i’m obsessed with ur editing 😩❤️🙌🏼🔥 My mom’s 60 y/o this year and finally retiring after 38 years being a teacher & I’m making her retirement video! Due to my limited budget, I really want to wow her with my editing instead. I’m going for the filmy, rustic, vintage vibe and I love the little things you guys add in your videos. Both of you are such an inspiration! 💓 it’ll be awesome to see some video editing hacks/tips/ideas from Mango Street. Much love from 🇲🇾

It doesn't matter if it's cheap or expensive - as long as you have a fire model with naturally curly hair, she can make it work.
