Watching you is like reliving my late teens,im 54 now but at 17 i was training to be a mechanic & body repairer,i would buy cars from the local paper that came out on a thursday it had a bargain basement section you could get cars & vans with tax & mot from £50,& repair them at home (parents)in the double garage welding,painting,engines,clutches,then run or sell them on,nice to see someone not afraid of hard work,you will always get by with an outlook on life like you have, well done & best of luck for 2024👍🏻

Nice save on the van. I enjoy the more ‘mundane’ vehicle stuff myself, especially older ones and commercials. I like your practical approach of one problem at a time - it can seem overwhelming when you have a vehicle with a bunch of problems. Probably why a lot of them get given up on. 👍🏻

Hi Harry, I think you have smashed the problem I have had looming for close on a year now. I have had massive vacuum in my diesel tank, (2.5 TDI 5 cylinder) So much so that it emptied my diesel filter on one journey. I cleaned the electrical fittings under the passenger seat, replaced the diesel fuel pump in the tank, replaced the fuel level gauge, replaced the fuel pipes, one was slightly kinked, and then eventually replaced the fuel tank, as well as three or four diesel fuel caps as these have a spring type valve or something inside. Made no difference! On opening the fuel cap a massive gush of air air would go into the tank and then it would pop where it was all vacuumed in. I've been on all the forums and VW sites, been onto VW delaers and no one has heard of the problems I had, until I have just come across your posting now. My engine is about double full of oil/diesel at the moment on the dip stick, I am not driving it and am about to change the oil and filter and get it back to a proper level, it is up the dipstick about the same level as it should be from below? Double... the level it should be, hopefully I havent damaged the catalytic convertor etc. I am fairly sure its the injector seals now, which cost 12 euros, But its a cam out job to get at the injectors which are buried in the head and apparently you need cam lockkng special tiools etc, to do this, which I dont have, or the experience of perfoming this job. I have found a bosch injector specialist who I think know what they are doing to do the job for me, If I knew I wasnt going to dig a large hole for myself and bury my van I would attept it. But I think these guys have carried out this work before and know what they are doing, its at least eight hours labour on their side. Also my other symptoms apart form the massive tank vacuum has been as it got worse a smokey engine, I only just got through the annual test. But the smoke just got worse and worse, I assume oil burning in the cyliders, white- gray rather than blue, but bad. The electrical connection under the pasenger seat is for the pre pump ( red plug) ... it shoots a bit of diesel in to prime the engine on ignition turn on. I dont think this is working either . Also Both my rear springs were broken like yours, Quiet cheap to replace though, I had a defective brake pipe as well failed on one test, I was pleasently surprised at a price of 15 euros for the pipe, fully formed with all fittings from VW. I Also replaced the water pump, apparently a common failure . Got a part ex with VW for the old one and got 80-90 euro back, I always check prices with VW now as you can be extremely surprised at the good prices for parts sometimes, and also that pump was ''then covered for Parts and LABOUR refitting'' for two years and my van is 2006 and it was fitted by me, Apologies for the long post, John.

I have a T5 with the BNZ engine (5 cyl) I went through this, turned out it was wear in the cylinder head around the injectors. Got an updated cylinder head with harder injector seats. Running ok at 200K with 40k on the cylinder head. Expensive business tho. Good luck!

The flashing light is probably the sensor beside the bottom handbrake , it will think the handbrake up all time if sensors gone

My T5 had the same issue with its previous owner and ended up snapping a rod 😂 good youve noticed it before it gets worse. Injector seals and tandem pump are really easy to do. Main thing is making sure it’s all super clean on reassembly. I used dieselbob to check my injectors were good before I refitted them

White smoke could be from a cracked cylinder head. Check for pressure in cooling tank. Also if you need repair manual in english for the engine, let me know😊 Also for the injectors, you need to be carefull when mounting the new seals because you can easily chip them when fitting in the injector grooves.

Door latch is common on these. The springs inside the latch pack up. Just stick a replacement catch on it inside the door.

The doors might have a faulty door latch, a misaligned door, an obstruction in the door mechanism, or electrical issues. A damaged or worn-out door latch may prevent proper engagement with the striker plate, while a misaligned door may not close properly. Objects or debris lodged in the door mechanism can also hinder the door from closing fully. Also electrical problems, such as a malfunctioning central locking system or a faulty sensor, can affect the door locking mechanism. Hope it helps.

Changing the high pressure pumps on one of these can be a little complicated because it needs to be timed. It's not difficult you may just need a dial indicator depth gauge and some patience.

Nice video, thank you. New subscriber here. You could get your money back and loads more by breaking it and selling the parts - if you have the space. The engine sounds OK. The MoT is a good way of getting a vehicle report without paying £150+ per hour for a garage report.

Is this a 1.9 or 2.5?

Make sure you change the engine oil....if its got diesel in it it'll grenade.

A leaking injector could also cause the issues you are having. I'd have all the injectors tested and cleaned whilst they are out.

So, you buy a non-running van from an auction for £500 and now the only things that are 'worrying' are all the spare parts you've just found in the glove compartment?

Mine was cheaper and all rebuilt and passed the mot now it converting it to have seats in back and I fitted the windows. £300 running driving van im over £2900 in to it at this point cheep vans don’t stay cheep parts are expensive
