IMO it's pretty damn great. It's plastic and therefore lightweight. A perfect combo with the a7c. Don't forget it's full frame. 5.6 is decent on a full frame and 4 is even better. For travel scenarios I usually wouldn't shoot anything less than 5.6. My biggest gripe is that it's not 24...or ideally 20mm at the wide end

Yeah, it’s small and COMPACT, and at a A7C kit price of about 300 bucks, it’s almost like the lens is perfect for the camera it comes bundled with. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT? lol It’s like KZfaqrs that hate on this lens (and the A7C being too small) only read half the marketing info, and then make straw-man complaints about why these items are bad. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ “…You can buy this (much bigger) lens for $150 bucks…”, yeah but then why bother with A LENS MADE FOR A COMPACT CAMERA.

Yeah, you’re just wrong on this one. I own all of Sony’s fancy G master zooms, but I still find myself looking at this kit lens because it offers a lot of things no other lenses do. The focal range is good enough, it’s plenty sharp, but most importantly, it’s tiny! Not to mention you can now buy this lens used for around €200, which makes it ab absolute steal.

Seems like you're trying to find faults, but if someone wants a small zoom lens, there is no alternative. Can't really compare it with larger lenses if this is what someone needs. Also, not zooming smoothly doesn't seem to be a cardinal sin for video. Not everyone zooms during filming (never seen you do it), and for vloggers it doesn't matter if it's not smooth.

Can’t agree with you, it’s a very light and good quality lens for 300$, because no one will buy it for 500$, but it’s quite good for its price, and you want to take it everywhere, much less noticeable than the big lens, you will get more shoots with it, content is more important than its optical properties

I don’t understand why many people are NOT recommending this. I am landscape photographer and bought this for regular focal range and IT IS incredibly sharp corner to corner. Then I bought a samyang 24mm f1.8 lens which has been touted by many as one of the sharpest 24mm primes rivaling even the GMs but it was no match for this ZOOM lens which gave much better corner to corner sharpness and even less vignetting . So if you are looking for a standard zoom lens with hood corner to corner sharpness and ok with the smaller aperture then this is the lens to buy.

I use this lens for videos with gimbal and it is perfect for this kind of use because it's light and the zoom is always more or less at the same length, in general it produces very good images with warm colors. 40.5 mm is not an odd filter size. Very common since fifties. If this lens is optically better and much smaller than previous kit lens... it is better lens for photography. Taking pictures of one lady is one thing, taking pictures of family in-doors is f5.6 anyway. It is not about bokeh then, but having all in focus.

Value is Relative, i value making an A7CR as pocketable and versatile as I can, an RX1zoom or ZV1fullframe , i dont know of another alternative zoom available from anyone that can do what this cheap ($200ebay or $300kit price) and compact lens can do. Not great to base the entirety of the lens on its launched at price….and to focus solely on that totallyRelative PoV. I do really dislike using poorly finished lenses though, it can be all the difference in how much you enjoy photography, maybe the point is that the lens is kinda toylike, and that valid too.

Compare apples with apples… To talk about the Tamron 28-75 in this video is just random. It’s actually great for video because the lack of focus breathing which is much more important than a smooth zoom. Wtf thinks smooth zooms are where it’s at!? this lens is a good little lens, the price alone is too high, but with the A7C it's a very good kit lens. all the tests are unanimous and say that the lens is very good and much better than the old kit lens. The whole point of this lens is to buy it with the A7C as a kit and save money on the total separate cost. I love this little lens - I don't think I'd pay $500 for it - though when I got it as a kit lens for my new A7C it was $300 - and more importantly, I find that I am having fun again shooting with it. Not the fastest, but with the capabilities of the new A7C it's more an adequate as a kit lens - perhaps the best kit lens Sony has ever made. The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD Lens is my go to lens in this range. But I'm finding I keep both of these handy when shooting. The smaller lens is just as sharp - has amazing AF matched to the A7C and is less conspicuous when navigating street shooting or an event trying to capture spontaneous moments or wandering a crowd all wearing MAGA gear and trying to stay under the radar to capture some "interesting" moments. :0) So personally I really like this little lightweight and very sharp little gem.

you might have some points but all of the things you pointed out are really not that big of a deal: -it's a kit lens exclusively made for the A7C. no one would spend $500 on this for using it on another camera. -nobody will really notice all those "flaws" unless you do a side by side comparison looking for them. -full frame sensors tend to have a very good behaviour with high ISO so the end result would be more or less the same even if the aperture is not as wide as we would like. -it's not brilliant in any aspect in particular but it can do all of them pretty decently, for many people i think it would be the only lens they need.

This is actually one of my favorite lens's for hiking/backpacking (if I am wanting to not carry a lot of weight), it's small and light with surprisingly good image quality (for what it is). I got mine bran new for $240 - look around, you should not have to pay full price for this lens. I would highly recommend it, if it fits what you are looking for. Every lens has its pros and cons. The Tamron you mention is a decent lens sure (specially the newer G2 version, which I might buy also), but it's also a lot more money, a lot bigger, and a lot heavier. The old kit lens is also way bigger/heavier, and from the comparison reviews I have seen, way worse picture quality. This lens seems more comparable to the tiny Samyang/Rokinon primes (size and weight wise), but then you only get one focal length... 🤷🏼‍♂️

I would agree with you that $500 is ridiculous, but when you are the only game in town..... Maybe $200 would be reasonable. But, with regards to it's usefulness as a kit with the A7C I disagree. There was a discussion over on dpreview and the OP had ordered the A7C without the kit lens and was looking for an all in one lens. This was part of my response on not including the kit lens suggesting he reconsider not purchasing it. "There is a good reason Sony made this camera body combination. You can extrapolate this scenario to your own circumstance, but let's say you and your partner are in Paris and you have spent the morning walking with the Tamron 28-200mm. You get back to your room and your partner says, hey let's go down to that little bistro and get a croque-monsieur and a glass of wine. Do you really want to take Tamron to lunch? Have you seen the size of those little tables? LOL In this circumstance, and many other you can imagine, where photography isn't your primary goal, you'll be thankful you have that little lens. Yes, it's slow and really only a 2X zoom range, but that's ok. Not every lens can be a constant f2.8 and fit the niche that this lens does, and not every occasion calls that type/size of lens. Optically, it's more than good enough and nicely fills the compact kit requirement." My 2 bits.

@@GreenBlueWalkthrough the e mount is the full frame mirrorless ecosystem with the most lens options and the only one to have a standard zoom this small so it’s the best for people like me, who want good professional lenses but also a super compact zoom for when you want to transform your a7 into an rx compact camera you clearly know very little about photography if you tell me you can adapt an m mount lens to another mirrorless mount, and also you cannot compare full frame cameras with an aps-c, there is a reason why it’s a fraction of the cost: smaller sensor and way worse specs overall. And when you mentioned the gopro i laughed really hard... Bro that has a fixed ultra wide angle and a minuscule sensor, it’s good for taking selfies and action shots, it’s just a completely different type of product

@@campa_t You know nothing of the gopro then... It's really good for video in general and like I said I used it on my channel for years. The only reason why I am upgrading to an M50 is for a bit more clarity and because my external mic adapter broke on me. I will miss the compactness and price tag both the A7 does not have mind you. So like I said unless you want to see text up close like unboxing a card it's really good.

I use this as the walk-around lens on my Sony A1. I have most of Sony's GM lenses, so I have a choice. It's an extremely sharp lens edge to edge. NO ONE pays $500 for this lens. It is sold as a kit and it is available on all sites for about $250 to $300. It is a 4-5.6 lens, not 4.5-5.6. This is Probably the Worst Video I've Seen for Free.

It's basically a pancake zoom lens, as small and lightweight as can be imagined. Add weatherproof sealing. Put it on a a77c and It's about as good as you can get for a carry all day and everywhere travel camera that isn't a tank. These "negatives" are common to all pancakes, but this has zoom that covers the range of all other prime pancake lenses on the market. This lens isn't an update of the 24-70. It's really in a completely different category. And two years later, you can find one in great shape for around $200.00. I love this lens.

I think you should have mentioned the Samyang 35mm f2.8 here. Yes it’s not a zoom lens but it’s better in every way. I think Sony should have made a retractable prime lens here like a 24mm f2.8 pancake.

I have to say - even viewing on my iPad it blows the old kit lens out of the water for sharpness and contrast. Yes it’s overpriced, but as a small, light travel lens it makes a lot of sense. And while I’d prefer my 12-24mm for wide angle and real drama, 28mm on a full frame is a lot wider than it is on APS-C.
@BoxxyFan

Wrong. APS-C is actually wider as the standard 18mm is usually 27mm equiv. So i fail to see how this 28mm is wider than a 27mm.

IMHO - the old kit lens is not great at all - was so glad to get rid - sharpness vignetting you name it This 28-60 is amazing in contrast and love the lens 28-60 is magic on A7c and ever since this lens i have not used a single prime which are now all sold off - for me covers all these primes 28mm 35mm 50mm and 60mm it could be a good lens bad lens situation with me however see some of the reviewers below have a similar view to me Please keep on coming re reviews - i enjoy your perspective about photography kits

I agree about the 500 bugs - that's too much. I bought mine for 220 Euro used. But I just love this lens for its small size and very good picture quality on my a7ii. I had tried the 28-70 before - and I hated it because of its performance at 28mm and I had tried the 2,0/28mm - again bad experience but probably I just had bad luck with mine because of sample variations. The smallish 28-60 does everything right - I use most of the time f 5,6 at 28mm or f8 at 60mm and it then does an excellent job in land- and cityscape but also family events etc. Mainly because it is only 28-60mm range the image quality and the size can be that good. For me it still replaces at least 2 lenses because I found that I mainly use both extremes - 30% the 28mm range, 10% 40mm and 60% the 60mm.

I often look at your reviews and I really like them. In this case I would like to point out that, in my opinion, the premise is wrong. The 28-60 is a lens to be bought exclusively in kit package, period. Then it is light, sharp, compact and resists flare well. And, if bought in a kit package (or used), it is also cheap. The only real limit is the reduced zoom range...Cheers!

As a kit lens it's a lot less that $500 and provided you are aware of it's limitations it can work well as a travel lens IMO in conjunction with a body that has a smaller form factor. Anyone who has flown on budget airlines in Europe will know exactly what I mean. It's a good little walkaround lens for daylight and if you have a little prime with you for lower light then you are pretty much good to go.

I found this little gem for $190 sitting in my local camera shop used (if at all?). I'm putting it on my A6300 to get a little smaller footprint. I traded in my old Nikon Gear to get a few lenses for my Z7II (picked up a 14-30mm and 24-200, to make up for trading my old 80-200/2.8D which couldn't focus automatically on my Z7II). Along with those, I had a little extra store credit and dropped it on this and a 120gb CF B card for the Z7II. I've got the Tamron 11-20, the Sony 18-135, and this now for the A6300 and as a landscape and still photographer, I think this is going to make a great in between lens that is much smaller and much more compact than the other two. I'll be able to use it in much more "covert" situations such as street photo, etc.

Comparing it with the Nikon 24-70/4S lens, Nikon's kit lens is the better choice, but it is much bigger. If someone is looking for a small, full frame zoom for street photography, only Sony can offer a suitable lens, and meanwhile we can find offers below 300 USD.

I can buy used lens for cheap ( between 200-300) like you suggest in your other video. please suggest a lens for a Sony full-frame camera under 300$ with a similar size and better quality. waiting for your response .. 1) Reason 1: it feels cheep (well, duh! it's is cheap). As a kit, it's also the cheapest option. Plus "feels" doesn't mean anything concrete. 2) Reason 2: the range. BS, it's just fine for video, and most casual photography. 3) Reason 3: "very marginal improvement", B.S still an improvement. And quite more compact. 4) Reason 4: zooming in and out while recording video? What is this, a 1995 camcorder?

Interestingly (to me at least), it's about the same price as a Pentax-DA 20-40mm F2.8-4 Limited, which covers almost the same zoom range (albeit on APS-C). I once had the 20-40mm Limited and loved it. The Sony is smaller and lighter, and is full-frame, so should it be worth more? But wait, the Pentax lens is all metal and definitely has build quality.
