In today's video we're entering the S-21 Prison & visiting the Cambodia Killing Fields. This is a horrifying & tragic part of Cambodia's history, but it is a story that has to be told. Viewer Discretion Advised.
Located in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, S-21 was once a high school that was turned into a prison by the Khmer Rouge regime in the late 1970s. Over the course of just four years, an estimated 20,000 people were tortured and executed here.
The video takes us through the haunting and somber halls of the prison, now a genocide museum, where we see the torture chambers, the tiny cells, and the gruesome images and stories of the prisoners who were brought here. We hear from survivors who were lucky enough to escape and from the family members of those who didn't, as they share their harrowing experiences of what happened at S-21.
But the horror didn't end there. The Killing Fields, located just outside of Phnom Penh, were the sites where the prisoners from S-21 were taken to be executed and buried in mass graves. Over one million people were killed during the Khmer Rouge's reign of terror, and many of them ended up in the Killing Fields.
The video takes us through the peaceful and serene fields, now a memorial to the victims, where we see the mass graves, the bones and clothing of those who were killed, and the memorials that have been built to honor their memory.
By the end of the video, we are left with a deep sense of sorrow and grief for the lives lost at S-21 and the Killing Fields of Cambodia, but also a sense of hope that we can learn from these atrocities and work towards a future where such crimes against humanity are never repeated.
