Have you ever felt like the the young, confident version of yourself has somehow become a grown up who feels small, unsure, and insecure? SAME HERE. So what do we do now? I have some thoughts. This video is a very personal glimpse inside my quest to rediscover my moxie. Come along for the ride (and bonus photos of my fearless, 6-year-old self)!
Process art is the act of creating art and staying focused on the process itself (versus the outcome of the painting or drawing). Creating art focused on intuitive choices of color, shape, and movement keeps me present and attuned to what is happening right now - not ruminating on the past or anxious about the future. It is a simple, accessible way to promote positive mental health, lower anxiety, and ease depression. Besides the self care aspects, it's also a fun way to create with zero pressure to perform. The act of creating is the goal. If it turns out beautiful too, it's the cherry on top.

Hello, Jackie! I am a relatively recent sub. I love listening to you. A lot of what you're saying in this video resonates with me. I had a tough & abusive childhood. My mother was bipolar and self-medicated with alcohol. She was also an acclaimed painter. I am Scottish and grew up there. Whenever I created art as a child, I always felt judged by my mother. So I never felt free. I was the opposite of what you described as how you recall your 6 year old self. I am now nearly 60 and I have been a painter for about 18 years. I have been adoring doing collage for the past year or so. It makes me feel BRAVE and free (which is a issue of mine and I am still learning at my age to bloody RELAX the rigid control that I struggle with. And the perfectionism...). I want you to know that I am grateful to you and your message. I appreciate you and I thank you from my heart ❤ Bless xo EDIT: btw, this is a gorgeous piece and I adore the colours!

Hi Lindsey, Wow, that’s a lot to handle as an adult, let alone as a kid! 🥺 Thank you for sharing part of your story - especially that you have been SO brave(!!) to become a painter in your own right in the shadows of your mom and (I imagine, a harsh inner critic) - You have so much to be proud of ❤️❤️❤️ The battle with perfectionism can be a lifelong thing, but I like to think those battles eventually get small enough to fit inside a fleeting thought that we learn to brush right past (at least on a good day 😅). Congratulations for all you have worked through and for your sense of adventure for going after what YOU want 🥳🌈🙌🏻❤️🤗 I’m so glad to have you watching! ❤️

It warms my heart when someone I know realizes and embraces the incredible aspects of themselves that are so apparent to me and those around them. Rockstar? YES! Badass? YES!! Some of the clutter you sense is a desire to be the responsible adult necessary to support and love those you've chosen to commit to. Give Badass Jackie grace as you rock on! ♥♥♥

WOW, Jackie! Your recitation of your witness statement brought tears to my eyes, as I was also a rock star at 8, before my Dad left our family, too! Your revelation stirred up some very deep wounded feelings , and although I dealt with all of the rejection and pain years and years ago, your brilliantly insightful words pulled out fragments of those feelings still lingering there, down deep inside my heart! This is beautiful Jackie! Very inspiring! I’m so sorry for your loss. ❤ You’re in a tough phase of motherhood. I guess every phase is hard in its own way. You don’t have babies you can just be home and peaceful with. And you don’t have kids old enough to drive themselves around and take care of themselves yet. So you’re still doing a lot of hands on mothering and running around and it IS exhausting and wears you down. I love how you are aware of your inner feelings and I think realizing them is the first step to reclaiming bad-ass Jackie! I’ve been on a journey of re-finding myself after leaving high demand religion and it has been wonderful and freeing to finally live for me and true to myself and who I am and let go of all the “supposed to” and feelings of never being good enough. You’re amazing and your art is incredible!

You have just echoed my journey last year with my counsellor and art therapy. I took the rocks out of my backpack, I gave the burdens back to the people who they actually belonged to. I discarded that backpack and now have space for my wings to stretch out and fly. And I'm so happy for you to have gotten to where you are. ❤❤❤

My problem is I can't remember being so free and fearless. I don't know how to turn the page and find my inner beautiful child. I keep doing art but can't pin down what works .

Hi Margaret - your inner fearless self is inside you, you just need to clear some junk away so you can fully see her. Have you tried pairing art making and journalling? The process I demonstrated in this video is something that has helped me (even in this video!) hear from myself. If you find it helpful, I have a few other videos that demonstrate this process.
