Nicely done, Chris! Performing the arpeggiated robotalk part is where the magic really happens. I rarely sync delays to tempo, often preferring slightly lazy for the dreamy, ambient vibe (a la Eno, Lanois). I need to look into that pedal! ;)

Yes, a bit of imperfection timing wise can create a very nice vibe. That's the first generation of the pedal, I think they have a better one now, if I'm correct!

OK Chris here's a listener request - who are some of your favorite french language electronic / pseudo electronic artists? I have all the good ones I've found like Clea Vincent, Brigitte, Juniore, La Femme, Poom, Christine and the Queens. But these are only what I can stumble across as an english speaker. What is some cool french electronic indie music that we might not know? Or even any language. Most of what I have is from Sweden and France, for this genre.

Nice video... When I create an external effect, a hardware, whether it is 2 mono or 1 stereo hardware, loses the stereo and everything is heard in the center? Does this happen to you? And also when I send send - line out from the settings in Cubase and my return input 1 has a delay even though I have all the settings of the apollo twin usb.. is there any other way to not have a delay?

Thanks Chris! Very helpful tips! I realized that you print the audio as render in place for the first time and then record it for the second time. Wondering why is that? And what’s the difference between render in place vs. recording the audio?
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 3 жыл бұрын
There's several ways to do this in Cubase. The second time around, I used an FX Channel to send to my guitar pedal, so Render in Place will not work the same since I wanted to record the Effect only without the Dry sound. So that's why I went and recorded straight on a track so I can record the effect only :)

Hi Chris, Wonderful music and thank you for this video. I’m sure you used the external instruments delay compensation in the I/O - Do you find this is accurate as sometimes I obtain a zero reading but there has to be some some signal delay with an external digital unit fx processor. Just wondered what are your thoughts. Thanks, Jeff
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 3 жыл бұрын
From what I understand, Cubase works this out automatically so most of the time it stays at 0 and sound perfect to my ears and sometimes I will see that Cubase compensate the delay by a few milliseconds or so without having to click on ''Measure Delay''

I've been using cubase since my fully blown out Atari 1040STE . Yeah, the big one with a 8mHz clock and a whopping 4MB (not gig) of RAM and literal rack of AKAI samplers.. Cubase 11 Pro is a long way from those days! You didn't go over the " measure delay". I didn't see a delay on the reamp send either. Are you not getting an issue with latency/timing in your rig? I've got a Clarette as my main interface and clock so there's great response time. So, I'm the guy who has "that old reverb laying around". I've got a old 1970s era Pioneer Spring reverb that was built for stereos patched in as an external effect and there is nearly 23ms of compensation applied when I use measure delay. Am I doing this wrong? It's basically for extra flavor and I used it on a snare. When I used "measure delay" it came back with that number. The manual wasn't very specific but I just assumed Cubase measured the "trip" in and out then compensates for the latency. It seems to work well that way. How is it that when you're going out to a pedal board that's not an issue? Additionally, I set up my "reamp" as an output. I then just send the dry guitar in cubase to that output instead of the stereo buss and mic the cabinet. I had it as a buss for awhile but stopped because this was easier. Is "render in place" the key here? Cause I don't do that and I've never used Freeze either. I liked how render in place adds an ease of functionality the way you're doing this so I'll try that out. Id love to know your thoughts about the measure delay feature. I'm still finding out new tricks all the time. If you're too busy maybe another commenter can chime in. I love this channel
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 3 жыл бұрын
I don't if it's because I'm using a Steinberg interface (AXR4) but Cubase measures the delay automatically and for the majority of the time it stays at 0 and I don't get any latency whatsoever. Some other times I will get some ms of delay compensation. Not sure I fully understand what's going on under the hood at this point. The thing I know is that I don't get any latency, so I'm good :)
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 3 жыл бұрын
If you're getting 23ms of DC, you're doing nothing wrong, that's Cubase's call.

Thanks so much for responding Chris! I figured with a snare if it was off I'd hear it, but Im glad for the confirmation. Cubase does some pretty amazing stuff "under the hood" with timing. Like VST performer where I can hear the track on the phone starting across the country before my cursor even starts to move! That blew me away first time I did that. Love your channel and your rig. Appreciate all the knowledge you pass along.

Bonjour Chris. At 9:44min you drag the new BOUNCE EVENT over the original EVENT (I didn't know that I can do that). Both EVENTS are there hatched. When I do that on my project, the dragged one REPLACE the old one. Questions: How do you know witch one will play? Is there a setting/preference for that? Thanks.
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Emmanuel, On the top left of the Audio, Event, you will see the name of the audio that is playing. Also, at the bottom center of an Audio Even, you will see a Arrow Icon aiming down, that will show all the names of audio events that are on top of an other and which one is playing. Hope that Helps!

Thankyou Great Video Chris :) inspirational! And a great sounding track. I just have a quick question related to this about impedance/signal level. I know you used the re-amp to go from XLR to hi-z for a guitar cab. For the robo effects pedal did you just go in from a line out…Or use the reamp box again? Also for using guitar effect pedals in general would you recommend to go back into an audio interface on a hi-Z input? I’d be really interested to know if there would be a change of frequency response. I can’t seem to find much online about doing this in DAWs as outboard external gear on a prerecorded DI guitar signal. Thanks!
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 3 жыл бұрын
I also used a Reamp Box to go to the pedals. Don't think there's a change of frequency response when doing so. When I'm dealing with a line guitar recording, I almost always reamp them, but when I'm recording a guitar player here at the studio, I will record through an amp right away to avoid reamping after. Same for effects like Robotalk unless I want to add this one up later on or in parallel to the guitar signal. But these kind of pedals can also be cool to use on vocals for a special effect of keys etc... :)

Hi Chris, I have Eventide H9 Max pedal and I am using it as external instrument exactly as you described. That pedal (and also few other external effects that I have) also have MIDI IN/OUT ports, but so far I didn't quite get to the point on how to utilize Cubase to change H9 parameters (i.e. reverb room size, or choosing different program, etc) from the DAW itself, using MIDI port from audio interface that is already connected to the H9 MIDI ports?
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I never worked with such a pedal so hard for me to give the right answer. There's probably more infos on the pedal company's website on how to use MIDI IN/OUT in a DAW.

Hi Chris. Thank you for this video. You are speaking about using stereo channel with mono signal because of using stereo effects. Everybody tells me to use in my Cubase mono channel for mono signal and then send it into stereo group for using stereo effects. But it seems to me too complicated.. Is it bad idea to use EVERY time stereo channel for mono recording? Is there any bad reason to not do it? I think it sounds absolutely same like when i record into mono channel. Thank you very much. I am still thinking about it..🙏
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 3 жыл бұрын
That is a good question and I think I will respond by making a video on this. I always record a mono signal on a mono channel and use and FX Channel as a Send to add a stereo FX, but on some occasion like in this video, I will put the Mono signal on a Stereo channel and insert the stereo fx straight on the channel. I will tell you why on that near future video :)

@@mixdownonline Sending the stereo effect on send is good but the send is the last thing on the chain (i think) But if you want to use some stereo effects IN THE MIDDLE of all plugins on insert slot, than you must use the stereo channel with included stereo insert (i think). For me is better not to thinking at the begin of a project if i will or not use some stereo effects in future. So i want to use ALWAYS stereo channel for mono recording. Just for sure. My question is: is it a bad way to use the stereo channel for mono signal EVERY TIME, will it sound worse with stereo channels or does not it matter?🙏😍
