Im gonna throw a spanner into your works here. us westerners have this idealised idea of thinking about craftsmen like him, we have this notion that they had some calling or some deep spiritual tie or something meta-fantastical calling them to this vocation and each item they produce has some meaning. but its completely different. so I flew to Japan and was lucky enough to meet a togishi (sword polisher) they are rated as one the highest grade craftsmen in the country as you need to a min of 10 years internship to become one. I was also lucky enough to film and interview him and I was under the impression I was going to learn something about work passion and get a deeper understanding of the universe through his wisdom as he had been doing it for over 40 years. Thats were I met the asian equation. They dont have this idillic fantasy about heart n soul being put into their work. They have a different mindset. You make a choice about what you want to do in life and then you just keep doing it over and over until you die. you make that choice once and you stick to it. you wake up and you work and you do your best, gambatte! you also dont over think it, you just do. start at point A and end at B, and repeat everyday. I remember during the interview I was trying to get out of him al kinds of deeper meanings and thought processes and he kept looking at me confused and just said, I like swords and I get up everyday and I polish them. nothing else to it. you just do it. I dont think about anything, I just work

lovely watching a master craftsman at work! Was curious to look up the location so used your google maps link in description. Places like this fascinate me about Japan, smaller countryside locations, filled with farmland... yet of course 2 vending machines right outside! Google haven't been out there to "update" the location on street view in almost 10 years but I would place good money on the vending machines (and everything else) still being the same. Thanks for an excellent video! ❤

The handle gains a little more character every time it's in your hand. I love my hand-forged Japanese chef's knives.
