This performance is from a 1969 German Dusty Springfield TV special. They also did A Salty Dog. The complete show is out on DVD as "Dusty in Deutschland". Gary Brooker knew Dusty Springfield when he was in the Paramounts, and was considering joining her backing band in 1966 after the Paramounts broke up. In early 1967 he and Keith Reid wrote a song for her (Understandably Blue), but she never recorded it. Procol Harum recorded a backing track, which was released as a bonus track on the 2 CD version of their debut album.

If you can't at least smile at this, you ain't no fun. It's is a freakin' hoot! While the sound's a little thin, the visuals are pure Batman on acid!... It's so bad, it's GOOD! Robin Trower fans will note he's playing a Gibson Les Paul. This was before he got into the Fender Strat. Regrettably, there's almost no solo to speak of, it's more like a fill, (No wonder Robin split and went solo!) Still, what he plays here is solid throughout.

I sorta consider the whole song a guitar solo ;)

Pure early goofy 70's graphics and clothes. At least PH seems to be recorded live. Nice to see this so many years later. Still a great song and loved by guitarists of course.

The show was broadcast on Monday 15 December 1969 (ARD, 21.00) and was subsequently revamped to represent Germany (!) at the 1970 Montreux TV Festival

Love it but...abbreviated? I just spent lot on the new box set. Just to see Salty Dog again. I know I am an old man now but their concert in Sydney in the early 70s was wonderful! Sorry to be a bother.

I had to give my friend Twilia a brief history of Robin Trower and Procol Harum. She had never made the connection.

SOOOO dated. But this is what it was like back then. For a killer updated version of the song check out Jake E Lee's version from his Retraced disc. He does a fine job with it.

Oddball transitional phase of the band as well as pop culture. The art direction of this promo film was already dated when it was created with cheesy graphic effects and trashy art. The dancers are pointless even though they do it well. Just seeing Robin Trower playing is always a treat and Barrie Wilson was one of the best drummers in the classic rock era. His timing on this song is very interesting although this speedy version for the film sounds like it's speeded up although Gary's vocals sound normal. It's fun to see this regardless and one from the overlooked "Home" album which saw the band moving more toward blues rock on several tracks while still keeping enough of their art rock in tow. It's a great album.

I concur, Home is overlooked but packed with excellent songs. This production is absurd though. Definitely made by a production team that was itself already dated and really weren't in sync at all with the group or the song.

This isn't a promo film, it's a clip from Dusty Springfield's 1969 German TV special "Dusty in Deutschland", which explains the dancers and special effects.

Does anyone know the story behind Robin's guitar here? It looks like the same heavily modified Les Paul that Gary Moore played in Skid Row.
@dennymcfastlane85304 жыл бұрын
Not that heavy of a modification for the times. Check out KZfaq... 'Procol Harum Special--Documentary 1970'. It shows Trower with that Les Paul throughout the whole Doc.

This song on the album "Home" is The kicker!! This video I think is Horrible. The Album version is way longer and really changed the Procol sound!! I believe "Home" is my Favorite Procol album! (Dark).

Someone once came up with the idiotic idea that every music show recorded in the studio should feature a ballet. This disease has spread all over the world. I can still understand a pop band singing and playing something upbeat and easy, but what the heck are these slick "obstructions" in rock, blues music???? Then what? In classical music too?
