Some of the most dangerous areas of any home, especially for young, curious children, are the places where poisons are stored, such as cleaning products and medications.
Limiting access to these areas will always be key to preventing catastrophe. Luckily, there are numerous procedures and products that can easily help secure cupboards, drawers, and cabinets that house these dangers.

In the early '80s, two of our sons (ages about 6 and 4) found and ate some iron pills my pregnant wife was taking. Luckily, we caught them in the act. I had my wife call poison control for advice and to tell them I was administering ipecac and water. Poison control told us to continue. Knowing the consequences of ipecac is vomiting, I put both boys in the tub and started the ipecac-water process. They vomited several pills each, staining the tub with pill-sized/shaped black stains. The accompanying fluid initially was black. About half-way through the process, the youngest started to lose consciousness, but revived with the cleansing of his stomach. I kept giving the now-crying boys water until their vomit was clear. They both had black urine for a couple of days. Our doctor later said ipecac saved their lives, that they probably wouldn't have survived long enough to get to a hospital for the purging, and that their kidneys, etc. were fine. They're now in their 40s.

Great video! Use to be, for a lot of poisonings, they'd get this set up of two bags, an instillation, and drainage bag, and two syringe devices, which connected the bags to the patient's large bore Ewald Tube. They'd instill Water, and Drain it several times until your stomach contents were clear. Then you'd possibly recieve activated Charcoal through the Tube, and the tube would be removed, unless MDAC, Multi-Dose Activated Charcoal was ordered, then you had to either keep that tube in, or You'd have a Nasogastric Tube inserted. This was known as Gastric Lavage, and It was NOT a fun procedure to perform for the Nurses. They hated doing it, especially because the suicidal patients to whom they did it, were fighting, gagging, and vomiting. Now they VERY VERY RARELY do it. Theere are only a hand full of medications that is safe to do this procedure with, and It's not a good idea, IT'S JUST NOT SAFE to do it in an unconscious patient, who's not intubated, and If you don't do it within 30 to 40 minutes of of the poisoning, It's not going to be effective. Same goes for making the patient drink Activated Charcoal. There's just no point in doing it in most cases. NEVER DO THIS AT HOME. NEVER induce vomiting, or Give Activated Charcoal At Home. Always Contact Poison Control, and Go To The Emergency Department. If the patient gets Charcoal, And they probably won't, but they'll get it there. If the patient gets Gastric Lavage, It'll have to be done soon after the overdose/accidental ingestion, and that probably won't get done. As for Syrup of Ipecac? That's archaic medicine, and You won't see that done.. Ipecac is a poison in itself.
