In today's video, we'll compare Procreate Dreams and Toonsquid for animation. Procreate's known for iPad drawing, so people were excited for its animation app. But Toonsquid also does animation, making it tough for animators to choose. Let's compare them and see which one is better!

the issue with procreate dreams is the missing tools needed for transforming and selecting objects in your animation. The lasso tool is the most important tool needed to fix your animation however it isnt available in dreams

Yes, everyone is familiar with the missing lasso tool. However, there is a workaround involving tracks that allows selection. Although I must admit it’s a huge hassle and can’t wait for them to develop a proper selection tool!

Great overview. I have both, and find Procreate Dreams’ design philosophy of hiding features makes it so much more frustrating to use. Toonsquid is full-featured and powerful. I will keep checking in with Procreate Dreams, but at least for now still find Toonsquid to be the superior app.

@@Tonabillity I haven’t had that issue, but I’m running it on a 6th gen iPad Pro 12.9” with a ton of ram. And maybe I haven’t taxed it as far as you have. That said, my opinion stands, for me, ToonSquid is a better app than Procreate Dreams. I expect that Dreams will improve over time, and who knows? Maybe it will get better, but I doubt they’ll change their design philosophy of hiding functionality.

@@sfdex I absolutely agree that if you haven’t had any issues with ToonSquid, then of course it’s the program for “you”. That’s only logical. If ToonSquid worked for ME, I’d be using it as well. No doubt Procreate Dreams will improve over time. I just hope that ToonSquid also improves over time for those with 5th gen iPads who find it unusable. In the interim, I’ve seen a plethora of phenomenal PD animations crafted by amazing innovators, who have discovered brilliant workarounds!❤️‍🔥 In fact I’m currently experiencing breakthroughs in animation as well from an app that’s supposed to be “worse” than ToonSquid 🤷🏾 I have BOTH programs, and find that NOTHING beats PD’s UNPRECEDENTED Performance Mode! However, I heartily agree that those who lack the capacity to comprehend hidden features should avoid Procreate Dreams at all cost! But I feel like Tony Stark, zooming in and out of Procreate Dream’s hyper-fluid, next-level, nonlinear timeline! If I’m not able to discover all of the hidden features of PD’s elegant design in this Information Age (of zillions of KZfaq videos), then I may as well crawl back to the 1980’s 😝😩 Enjoy ToonSquid’s antiquated interface. I’ve moved on to the Future 💫

Thanks for this video. I feel like I'm going to wind up buying both. I expect I'll like Dreams more, but I really want to give the creator of ToonSquid money because it's an incredibly competent piece of software, especially for being one person's side project, and doubly so for being so cheap.

was super hyped for procreat dreams. then i started it and welll... i was super disappointed. coming from programs of the adobe suite. i haaated dreams UI. everything is hidden. so many missing features that are just basic stuff like a lasso tool. changing FPS of imported media and so much more. i guess i give the squid a go. that looks much better for animating. and dreams STILL wont import picture sequences correctly?? this is insane. its nice that they have a big team but gosh. they fail hard in bug fixing even the most important stuff. they really kill their reputation with dreams. thank you for this comparisson video.

@@Op09687 I agree with you. For anyone who needs vectors or rigging, no doubt TS is the appropriate platform at the moment. It was sufficient for me while it lasted. But for decades my industry pals and I, have been dreaming of a mobile app that focuses on traditional frame by frame animation and the craft of actually “drawing”. I’m sure that eventually PD will adopt all of the expected tools used to enhance contemporary production pipelines - AND MORE. In fact, I heard that procreate is already eagerly developing an Apple Vision Pro version of their platform! In the interim, PD’s missing Lasso tool has been a bit of a blessing in disguise for me personally. It FORCES me to return to those basic, essential DRAWING skills that were diligently practiced before the Digital age emerged. By the time they hammer out their upgrades, my drafting skills will be much stronger💪🏾 I sincerely hope that ToonSquid is working to improve their performance issues as well. Their relentless lagging difficulties, screeched production to a halt before Procreate Dreams arrived. I hope you NEVER have to experience the frustrating problems that I did!

I can't rule out the lack of lasso tool in pdreams but I still like it and hope for the feature to be added. I use toonsquid for light motion graphics which in my opinion trumps in that department. @@TMC3000Thank you for your thorough reply. I own ToonSquid as well, but I’m currently hooked on Dreams! I’m just now realizing that when most people speak of Animation, they are probably thinking of the “modern day” definition, i.e. motion graphics, rigging, etc. So within that context, they no doubt have a legit point in finding Procreate Dreams useless. And there are indeed a plethora of apps that out-perform PD in that regard. However, I am only interested in ONE particular thing. Traditional (old-school) frame by frame Character Animation. But that technique is so old-fashioned that one must have the capacity to draw EXTREMELY well, with or without contemporary lasso tools. So most users go into a rage whenever I acknowledge that PD forces me to practice drawing better, without the aid of Cut & Past tools that I usually rely on. On the other hand, I find that PD’s navigation interface, so DYNAMIC and futuristic, that it simply cannot be beat, flaws and all! I’m constantly amazed by how fluidly I can move frames around non-linearly, and on the fly. I’m currently working on a dialogue scene, and my capacity to adjust frame lengths to work out timing (and acting) has been tremendously upgraded. I can only equate it with freestyle rapping! However, I’m highly aware that I’m in the minority of those who are hyper-focused on such ancient techniques. ToonSquid fans usually fly into a rage whenever I praise the benefits of Procreate Dreams so enthusiastically. I’ve been accused of spamming, trolling, and everything else! It’s very rare to see someone who appreciates the benefits of such a flawed program as much as I do, so thanks again for your unbiased input 👍🏽

I feel like trying to emphasize an intuitive and less-technically minded workflow works better in Procreate since it's okay for single illustrastions, but once you are working with frames and video encoding pipelines, the procreate approach is too fuddy duddy and it feels like Procreate Dreams doesn't really want to support granular and fine tuning with its lack of tools and precision.

I hated PD’s interface as well, until I learned how to use it. I now find it to be transformative!! YES, it’s challenging to learn because it’s UNPRECEDENTED! There’s absolutely NOTHING like it! As for ToonSquid, it is NOT a professional program. In the middle of playing my animated music video, it began to stutter and stop. I tried it on my second iPad and still it relentlessly stutters! Finally, I imported the video into PD and it plays as SMOOTH as BUTTER! You can KEEP ToonSquid. I have a video to finish!! 🤷🏾

@@TMC3000 Yup. Let’s say that I have a character (wearing a hat) eating lunch at an outdoor café for 50 frames. Halfway through, I want a gust of wind to blow the characters hat off. So on the frame 25 I would copy and paste that frame onto a new track above. On the bottom track, I would erase the hat. On the top track, I would erase everything EXCEPT for the hat. This leaves me with a hat that’s free to animate being blown off of the characters head. As you mentioned, it’s tedious, but at least doable for now!

at the time, I didnt even know procreate was making an animation software. But despite that, it never promised rigging. So get off your high horse and accept that unless its been actually presented with bones for rigging, always expect it wont have it. And that at the moment, the devs are either unable to make it or are still working on creating a fully rigging software for ipad and tablets out there. cuz the tech for tablets in general is kinda iffy. its getting better each year but some still are not powerful enough to handle such processing. If I recall, apple literally holds back their M1 and even M2 chips on purpose. idk why, but they are. So, stop being a baby and use what we have now or use your PC instead. If you that impatient and egotistical, get your own dev team or solo it, and create the rigging app.

@@TheLuconic Well said.👌🏾 Eventually, PD will have all of the bells and whistles that everyone else has. But for now what makes it different from every other platform is the very same thing that makes Procreate different from every other platform. It’s the very best DRAWING app that I’ve ever experienced. And for me, there’s nothing sweeter than DRAWING in Procreate Dreams. All of my favorite brushes are there and drawing is a smooth as butter!
