bro I adore your videos, your art relaxes me and you are one of my artists who most inspire me to draw, I have a doubt is that you use a hollow or edge brush to draw the branches and I draw many hoses and pipes and I would love to use a Brush similar to the one you use for the branches but I use clip stuido paint because I don't have a tablet, do you know how I can make a brush like yours but for clip studio? 4:22

I loved hearing you talk about your favorite bridge. I completely understand that feeling you have, as I too have very almost "mundane" things that make me so happy, even though I can't express why. Although, even it IS a bit frustrating when nobody else shares that same joy that I have and they don't understand it, it almost makes it more special to me. As though it's my personal piece of happiness and inspiration. 🥰 As someone who also love bridges, there is a video on KZfaq that I would recommend that's all about the different kinds of bridges around the world that you may find interesting! It's a very fascinating, educational video. The title is "Every Bridge for Every Situation, Explained by an Engineer".

Your talk about the bridge and reference photos, plus talking us through your process for this joyous piece of art was so natural and informative. I have the double tap on the apple pencil turned off: I think too much and always turned the eraser on. Thank you, Mikko

I also trigger it accidentally all the time and then when I actually WANT to do it, I fail at giving it a noticeable tap. “Siri eraser dammit!” Also doesn’t seem to work though it might just be my accent. 🧐

So do I. I dont use the double tap feature. But I do use that shortcut gesture. If you double tap on your iPad screen instead of the apple pencil while painting on Procreate, it acts as if you are tapping on the pencil despite being turn off.

Whenever I am looking at one of your artworks, I wince at the beauty and the yearning feeling I get from it, if you know what I mean (and if you don't, it's a complement ^_^) I always feel inspired by derelict places, like old brick buildings, train tracks, alleyways, with climbing ivy and weeds, streams, even gutters, and I find it hard to describe why I like them so much :) Also, at some point, could you possibly go over how to make a brush similar to the strange one you used for the leaves? It seems like it leaves much more room for being expressive, which can be hard to get in a lineart piece that needs a strict sketch underneath it. 😊

Seeing this painting in particular inspired me to focus on developing my digital art skills instead of just admiring other’s work. It invokes such a magical feeling. As a child I loved to draw but other things took precedence over developing that further. Now I'm finding the time again to draw and relearn something that brought me so much joy. I just bought my Apple Pencil last week and I'm so excited to continue on this new journey. I love love love the way you talked about the whole process of creating this art piece! It really inspired and made me rethink why am I doing art in the first place. Thank you for this video (and I’m going to rewatch this video over again after this!) & make art to capture the feeling I felt and share it with others. Regarding the apple pencil trick, I had another issue as you, it wasn’t that easy to double tap. But the trigger point for me was the eraser often times switch on it’s own when I’m drawing, so I had no choice but to switch the function off instead.
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
I might turn the function off for making art that doesn't need lineart because I switch it on accidentally too but when I actually need it ... the success rate is somewhere around 60% which can totally kill the flow of working.

I use the double tap feature quite often, especially when using black with eraser as a “scratchboard” technique. It does tend to be a little fussy sometimes, but you get used to it eventually. I find it helps to be very deliberate and make sure each tap is solid. For a while I was double tapping my real pencil when drawing traditionally because it has become sort of a habit. Great artwork and tips as always, Mikko! Thank you for what you do.

Hey Mikko, I recently found your channel and i want to thank you for who you are and what you do! Your artwork and mindset has been a huge boost of motivation for me to pick up drawing/painting again with a new mindset of my own! I sunk into depression when i was younger and stopped because i thought my art wasnt good enough, and i think that it escalated my depression for the worse because my imagination used to be my ”safe space”.. Your peace of mind, thoughts, emotions and artwork make me feel okey with my own negative thoughts in a way and inspire me to start and continue my painting again and to prove myself wrong, even if it takes years! I miss my safe space and thanks to ”just” that little bridge of yours i feel motivated myself🙏🏻 And btw, i love that you made your signature as a piece of graffiti on the bridge, graffiti is what got me into art as a kid and its probably why this video and storytelling just hit so hard for me! Sorry for writing a short novel here in the comments, but this is wholesome af my dude, much love from your neighbor in Sweden✌🏼

Tons of artists, documentaries and creators all speak on the importance of drawing inspiration from life. It is important to life in general and not just art. There are days you need to feel inspired. When you need it is when it will happen. Miyazaki for instance likes to people watch in suburban neighborhoods, others like to go for walks in the woods or go hiking or maybe watch people in the city, or on the train or in a cafe, whatever inspires you, you have to live it and it can come from literally anywhere whether it’s scenery, life or structure or even just other art in real life. Whatever you need is just outside your door, something impactful and poetic that you didn’t know you were looking for that you’ll want to hold on to is never far away. We can capture it in whatever way we want, even just a photo. Nothing we make has to be perfect, the meaning we find in it already is.

Interesting... I find myself questioning why so many people paint a photograph. It is a lot of work and effort and there's little extra input from the artist that paints based on replicating a reference picture. I get it when it comes to starting out on your art journey and use a reference to practice sketching, colouring, lights and Shadows and whatnot, but not as an intended piece of art. I agree with you Miko, I also fin it empty and wasteful in terms of energy when there's so many cool things we can paint based on what we see. I hope many other artists can see this as well.
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
There’s a movement of art called photorealism. For that photographs are a good sole reference point as photorealism isn’t about 100% realistic depiction but painting in a way that has all the pros and cons of photography. For training realism in painting I’ll always recommend real life reference over photographs. Even the most expensive cameras out there can’t come close to replicating the unparalleled dynamic range our eyes have. Starting out and training from photos often leads to colour habits that are hard to get rid of, such as using white or black in a painting or seeing hue variations in very light or dark areas. These are not human eye flaws but limitations of cameras that are unfortunately easy to subconsciously adapt to the way we see colours. Again there’s nothing wrong with realism nor photorealism but I just wanted to point out the differences because these terms are often mixed together even though the goals and ways to achieve them are quite different. It can be helpful to understand these differences even when you’re not doing either or are just borrowing aspects of them. In any style being able to verbalise the visual problems to yourself is usually the hardest and most important part of design so that’s why a lot of art theory can sometimes seem like endless semantics (sorry).

thank you so much for sharing your work and thoughts! your videos make me so excited about all the things that are possible for me to explore in my own art journey! it's a way that i can continue what i found most helpful in art school - learning to see possibilities. my problem now is choosing what to act on, because i have so many ideas all the time, but i think the selection process happens naturally as i will obviously choose to do what excites me the most, what feels the most important. (unless it's SO important that it becomes scary, then i might be a pissbaby and hide in another project, heh.)

I’ve done an uncut version of most of my painting videos I’ve done this year and this will have one about this illustration too. Last time I made a version with extra commentary and the AngryMob seemed to like that so I think I’ll do the same for Hidden Entrance. Zero Hour was 4.5hrs long and this is MUCH longer so I might need to break it into 2 volumes just because the risk of premiere crashing is just too high for project of this length. Also I need to probably edit the commentary a bit lighter or it will just never be actually done. Unfortunately I can’t afford to hire an editor to get that content out faster. I’m 100% of the staff here and even I need a break sometimes. 😅

In the bigger picture though it’s more important to pick a tool that you don’t need to keep switching rather than prioritise the texture it has and that you can find out by trying what feels natural to you.

@@angrymikko Thank you so much for the advice. I’m relatively new to Procreate so I’m a little overwhelmed. I used to use ArtStudio before and wasn’t very efficient at that either and it’s nowhere as nice, lol. I bought some nice brushes from GrutBrushes that I’m trying out. I’ll definitely take your advice on limiting my tools. Thank you!

Your bridge story is very transporting! For lack of a better way to say it. I disabled the apple button function on the pen because I kept doing it by accident. I could learn to use it properly but yeah no 😅

Apologies if I'm repeating something someone else said, but my problem with the double-tap feature isn't the difficulty in activating it. I can hold my pencil at arm's length away from the iPad and switch tools with the double-tap gesture, the range on it is just fine. For me, the problem is that it often triggers when I don't mean it to. It will register my shifting my grip slightly as a double tap and switch to the eraser. Other times, I'll switch to the eraser intentionally but try to erase too quickly and the pencil paints instead of erases (there's a lag in Procreate, I think, when switching to the eraser tool where if you paint too quickly it contiues to add color instead of erasing. Not sure why that happens). I did have to turn off Scribble, though, Procreate's implementation of that was driving me bonkers, so I had to turn it off globally because I couldn't turn it off for specific apps.
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 3 жыл бұрын
Same and same. Scribble was just not good for me because I triggered it by accident all the time. For the way I’m holding the pencil the finger movements needed to do a tap feels really unnatural.
@Shad0wchasers1

@@angrymikko Yeah, it's definitely a gesture that I think will be easier for some people than for others. I know a lot of people automatically assumed that it only worked on the flat side of the pencil, but it actually works around the whole circumference. Adjusting the timing of the double tap did help me to 'dial it in' to where it felt comfortable to use, so I do use it in preference to reaching for the eraser tool, but the occasional accidental triggering of it still happens and that can be a bother. As for Scribble, I really wish I could turn it off specifically for Procreate, so I would still have it available for my note-taking apps and other interfaces where it would speed up enterting or editing text. Maybe iPadOS 15 will offer that...

I’m using Apple Pencil double tap for color picker. For me that’s much faster and convenient than finger.

Mikko, I love your art. Can you share with me,When you are painting I see you using the pencil and then every now and again you press your finger to the screen and it makes a little circle around your finger and you continue to draw what is the purpose of you pressing your finger to the screen what are you doing with that action? Thank you for your reply and thank you for sharing your wonderful art with us and all of your wonderful knowledge.

That’s me colour picking from the canvas. I’ve adjusted the timer for the colour picker activation so short that it’s almost instant. I do it all the time so having a quick activation on that really helps the flow of working.

Just on KZfaq. The last was on white colour and later I’ll get into more colour theory. They are NOT painting videos. In any of the classes I’ve been running it’s never been about how I paint things. The Beginner to Advanced series is based on art fundamentals and it’s not specific to any programs apps or tools.

As soon as you posted those brushes I got them! Really nice stuff!!! Just a quick question what brush did you use to the black lineart? It looks so firm and organic. Also what is the final resolution of that particular piece if you don't mind :) EDIT: I just saw from the video that it is called fast wavy lines? Those must be some personal brushes of yours :) EDIT 2: Aaaand I will follow the brush settings in the other video :D

Have you tried switching to the eraser with the thumb? I use the thumb because using the index forces me to grab the pencil differently or readapt after each switch.
