New Balance, introduced baseball star and brand ambassador, Francisco Lindor, to the home of cricket at Lord’s with ex-England and Kent cricket player Rob Key. The sportsmen exchanged insight and technique, before taking to the nets alongside Glamorgan cricketer Billy Root.
For your chance to win a Francicso Lindor signed bat, glove and England T20 shirt just subscribe to Pro:Direct Cricket, like the video and comment switch hitter and below. The winner will be announced Thursday 31st January 2019.
Rob Key took the Cleveland Indians rising star through the historic corridors of Lord’s as he gave Lindor a crash course in the sport of cricket, its rich history and hall of fame. After comparing the art of both cricket and baseball and the role of batsman and bowlers against pitchers and hitters, Lindor was presented with a personalised official New Balance T20 match shirt, DC pads and gloves and headed to the nets at Lord’s to test his technique in front of the wickets.
The exercise was a learning experience for both Lindor and Key, as they discussed technique when holding their stance and gripping their bat. Despite initial difficulty striking the cricket ball, Francisco Lindor soon adapted his technique under supervision from Rob Key and Billy Root, before displaying his talents further by using a baseball bat in front of the stumps. The roles then swapped around as Billy Root showed his cricket technique and attempted to replicate Lindor’s power hit.
After spending the day with Francisco Lindor at Lord’s, Rob Key said: “It was a really insightful experience spending the day with the talent that is Francisco here at the home of cricket. The opportunity to exchange traditions and techniques between cricket and baseball demonstrated how individual each sport is, from a batters body position, stance and movement when striking the ball as well as their grip compared to a hitter in baseball. Spending time with Francisco was fascinating and I think we both learned so much.”
To celebrate the net session, having a hit with Francisco and Billy Root we have a bat, glove and England T20 shirt signed by Lindor to give away. Just subscribe, like the video and add switch hitter in the comments.

As an American, I am going to learn more about cricket when I next get some off time. I love baseball, and the sports almost seem like cousins to each other. I just remember learning about baseball as a kid, watching it (grew up geographically near an MLB town) and falling in love with the game. It struck me that hey, I could have a chance to experience that again.

Another American here who has fallen in love with Cricket. I started making a solid effort to learn about it a couple of years back, but this year I've now introduced it to my father, who's in his 60s. When baseball is in the offseason he said he wanted another sport to have playing in the background the way he does with baseball. My he and my brother have always had a very strong baseball connection, and now I'm finally getting to experience that through Cricket, discussing the game and the like. We're even planning to someday take a trip to England to watch a Test as a father and son thing, something I've never gotten to do with him.

@@theauthorofoz164 that's fantastic! A tip for your trip, don't get tickets for just the 4th or 5th day of the test, as many can be over in three! Lords and The Oval are in London and are very nice grounds, however the best atmosphere in my opinion is to be had at either Headingly in Leeds, or Trent Bridge in Nottingham. In addition the beer will be better and the accommodation far cheaper. Good luck!

This popped up in my recommendations and boy am I glad it did. Such a brilliant video. The culture shared, the history, it’s so good to see an American athlete be genuinely interested in a sport not played in the US, and not just standing there going “ohh yeah well baseball is better because dah dah dah” like so many others would do for their certain sport. His willingness to learn about cricket and have a go at Batting was awesome to watch, he could get a spot in a T20 in a heartbeat. I’ve followed baseball on the tv for a while now and Francisco Lindor is my new favourite player. Great great video!

@Swapn Lok huh? All of those things effect baseball. Are you playing at sea level or 5000ft elevation? Alot easier to hit a home.run in Denver than elsewhere. How about Humidity? Sun shining on the pitcher but the hitter is in shade? What about the infield. Are they tough? What kind of grass is used on the outfield? Then you say what kind of bowler matters... yeah, same with pitcher. Is he a submarine pitcher? Side arm? Does he work fast or slow? Not to mention knowing what types of pitches he throws. Everyone has this habit of simplifying things that they dont know about

Seemed like a really nice down to earth guy, who was interested in learning about cricket. Was very knowledgable on baseball obviously and didn't do too badly with the cricket shots. I don't really like baseball I find it boring, but by the same token I can see 100% why a baseball fan wouldn't like cricket and would find it boring. By knowing the nuances of the game like the batting wicket, whether to bat first or not the conditions which could affect the swing of the ball it really makes it interesting and I'm sure if I got to know baseball better those nuances would make the game way more exciting for me.

Depends. I think a switch hitter would stand a better chance as they'd in theory have easier access to the full repertoire of shots. Additionally The problem with somebody like Rob Key doing this is that they show guys an extremely orthodox/traditional way to bat that doesn't really acknowledge that flat bat shots (in addition to straight bat) exist, which all the top players live and breath these days.

The very first adaptation from basebll to cricket was the "cut off" throw. Became popular in the 1960's when there were a number of Australian cricketers who played baseball in their offseason (they actually had one then). Later coached by Bob Simpson, it uses two sharp and hard throws from outfielder through infielder to stumps. Timed to be quicker than one big arc throw. Because the USA have such great sub systems with Colleges they are also miles ahead with sports sciences and they are always studying injuries with view to lessen or eradicate them.

@Chris Davis that's an excellent point. So how many of the squad are in the field during the opposition innings? Just trying to work out the actual hours standing in the field. In a test match (that's an international match which is limited to 5 days), if your team is fielding and the wicket isn't doing much (flat and not much turn) you may be in the field for two days of 7 hours or so. There are drinks breaks and meal breaks. If however as Robert Key said you are scoring a big score (221 is a very big score) you might be actually batting for12 hours or more. The level of concentration, fitness and discipline is quite extraordinary, add to that the pressure on the top players to deliver and the relentless schedule of 5 match test series followed by One day matches then T20 series in a tour to Australia or India for example, the top cricketers play all year round and some inevitably burn out. The greats who do it over a long period of time, are truly incredible sportsmen. I went to a Cubs game in Chicago a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, the beer and the dogs were first class and the fans in the bleachers were only to happy to explain the plays to me.

As a baseball fan with minimal knowledge of cricket. I was thinking that part of the difference between swings might not just be the need to defend in cricket, but also related to the need for endurance you’re mentioning. The sort of short controlled swings in cricket involve smaller bursts of energy and are likely much easier to maintain over the long period of play, it was noticeable that when he was putting his hips into it in a more baseball style way he seemed to be exerting more energy (seems like something that if a cricket player was in try and use it would be infrequently). I know I used to get tired during batting practice so I’d imagine taking baseball swings in cricket (besides just the fact it’s not really suited to the defensive part) would lead to players wearing out much quicker than otherwise.

@@-NemoMeImpuneLacessit Hi Nemo, to answer your question... A baseball game is typically 2.5 - 4.5 hours as Chris Davis said. The whole squad that is in one team's lineup, 9 players, are on the field while the opposing team is batting. However, the sides switch every 1/2 inning. Each game is 9 innings, so each 1/2 inning is only a few minutes long, meaning typically every few minutes one team comes in to bat and the other team goes out in the field. You probably noticed this in Chicago. So, to answer your question (finally), as a baseball player you're only standing in the field defending for probably 1 1/2 hours during the game, on average. However, the 1 1/2 hours are typically more intense than they are in cricket, as a defender. Baseball is much more low scoring than cricket. It's more like soccer in this regard. The final score of a game may be 3-2 or 2-0, so runs are absolutely huge, and can be scored at any time, so in effect the entire game can change with every single pitch. This makes the game a little more intense. I think the move towards one day cricket was to increase this intensity level. A cricket match can turn in an instant, in that you can get an opposing batter out on a single ball, and that batter doesn't get to come up and bad again 45 minutes later, like in baseball. The concentration you have to have as a cricket batsman is unmatched in professional sports I think, with the possible exception of golf. Golf is a little different because no one else is trying to take you down- only you can do that to yourself, but I digress... I will back up what Chris was saying that in terms of the every day grind of a professional sport, no other sport that I am aware of matches American Major League Baseball. A baseball season is 6 months long and they play 162 games. You can do the math, but you're typically playing 6 days a week. In Japan, they play 144 games. In the county leagues in England, I just checked the schedule and it's 6 months, but "only" 99 days of playing. Don't get me wrong, 99 days in 6 months is grueling too, but it's not 162 games in 6 months. Also, in American Major League baseball, you're obviously traveling longer distances to traverse all around the country. You do have to be somewhat fit to play both sports, and speed and strength are definitely factors (speed is a bigger factor in baseball than cricket), but I would put neither cricket nor baseball players at the top of the list of sports that require fitness. You can definitely be an amazing hitter, pitcher, batsman or bowler without being in top physical condition.

I'm an American who would love to see baseball become more international, and I will watch virtually any two nations play each other regardless of their world ranking (Slovakia vs. Peru? Yes, please). But I have also recently discovered the merits of cricket and I'm excited to see and learn more. I'm starting off with T-20, which I guess is looked down upon by some purists(?), but I think it's great. The MLB game I was going to see in London in June is cancelled, but hopefully I'll be able to see that and take in a cricket match in 2021.

@jamalcolorado4260
@jamalcolorado4260 3 жыл бұрын
@@spa7618 Baseball games also last over 3 hours and mental strength is a very important factor. For example a hitter can strike out 3 times in a row and he is still expected to go get a hit on his next plate appearance. You also need to be intelligent when batting, you need to try to hit the ball to different places on the field at different speeds depending on the situation. You also need to be intelligent on the base path, like when you want to steal the base you need to make sure you don’t get picked off. And baseball actually suits people with long attention spans because each game lasts anywhere from 3-5 hours and there are 162 games in a season. Baseball certainly takes a lot of technique and skill, you need to hit a round ball that moves and curves in different ways with a round bat, and if you swing slightly above the ball you ground out, if you swing slightly below the ball, you pop up, it is a game of inches that is incredibly technical and difficult. There are plenty of players who are not "buffed up", we call these players contact hitters or speedsters. These are players like Ichiro Suzuki or Jose Altuve. They are expected to be very fast runners who can get on base with weak hits and they also steal bases. There are plenty of power hitters and plenty of smaller contact hitters. Also, there is no chance that a cricket player could easily become a good baseball hitter. Baseball is an incredibly difficult sport that takes years of practice and dedication to master. In the video with Jos Buttler hitting baseballs, they were throwing the ball very soft. This is what we call batting practice. Most people in batting practice hit the ball very far and it isn’t very difficult because they aren’t throwing the ball hard. In the video, most of the "homeruns" Jos Buttler hit would be easily caught on a baseball field because baseball fields are very big. I guarantee you that Jos Buttler would be absolutely terrible in a real baseball game. But I am also sure that a baseball player would struggle in cricket. Baseball and cricket are both great and interesting sports that are both equally difficult, they each have there own unique qualities that make them special and I love baseball but I think cricket is an equally amazing sport.

I oftern find that Americans as "owners" of baseball do not realise just how global the game of baseball has become. So look it up...you can find the nations that compete at qualification level for the World Baseball Classic or even the recent qualifications for the Olympics. Have a look at the nations that play off for the Little League World Series. Until the recent unification of World Softball and Baseball bodies there was a World Cup that had been played for since 1938. And believe me as a person who has been around both sports as officials make sure you take in a Test game but start with the first or second day. the T20 variant really is an entertainment package designed for around three hours of play and hence for those with short attention spans.

I think one common misconception that cricket fans have is how easy it is to hit full tosses.Now yes, when you can hit a ball 360 degrees anywhere in the field in definitely is easy, but when you can only hit the ball in a 90 degree area it is much tougher.A little too early or too late, it becomes a foul ball immediately.Also take into account the smaller bat size and sweet spot,which makes hitting much harder.Furthermore, hitting a ball in play against four players inside the 90 degree angle is tough.Lastly,please note that the pitchers regularly throw above 93mph (150kph), fastest pitchers throw 102mph (164kph) so there is not a lot of time to identify the pitch and decide whether to swing at it or not.So baseball is not as easy as you think it is

You didn't even mention the most important part. They're using "full toss" to combine every single pitch in baseball, which is laughable. After 31 years of playing baseball I finally got to hit some cricket. Its not harder or easier, its just different. Hitting with a flat bat is easier but hitting off the bounce is harder. I do like that hits that would be foul are considered good swings. Ive always wondered if there have been any successful players that transitioned from one to the other.

Cricket is 2x more complex and nuanced than baseball. Once the ball starts spinning your head will also spin.

That was great. Picked the right couple of blokes to do it too. Loved the interaction and the determination to improve and get something right. You can see why they've had success in life. I've played quite a bit of tennis, golf, cricket. I always find it interesting how the mechanics are essentially identical and transferable between the sports(I'm casually obsessed). I learn something about golf and all of a sudden I'm a better tennis player. Apply my tennis Footwork to cricket and I bat better. My serve technique is pretty solid through copying a pitching motion (I'll pitch the racquet head into the tennis ball fairly literally to warm up or to get the right motion feel, weight transfer)(see pro golfers make a batting move before they line up the ball, to avoid the dreaded reverse pivot I assume) . I've never played baseball but I go ok because I can use the same theories there. My serve return and defense in basketball technique crossover.... I'll stop banging on now..

baseball is only hit the ball? you know that baserunning is a key element in baseball? a team can't get a score if the runner didn't run around bases and back to the home

@Koushik Vemuri To me, baseball is the most difficult american sport because of situational play and durability for 160+ games in scorching and humid heat, but that's why latin players love baseball.

A long time ago a team of baseball all-stars visited England. While there they played a team of top cricket players. They played one game of each sport. As you'd expect, the cricket players won at their sport and the baseball players won at theirs. Would be fun to see something similar again.
