In today’s video I am going to be doing a demo of the wonderful Heritage Audio Successor! This is a stereo compressor, and looks like a great piece of hardware so I am very excited to try it out!
With the Successor, you will “feel how your separate tracks interact and blend together in a way not possible when master bus compression duties are relegated to the mastering stage.” The Heritage Audio Successor incredible features to the table, including the following: a fully Carnhill transformer coupled input and output unit, making the new Successor a true diode-bridge based bus compressor with advanced sidechain filtering and built-in processing capabilities, sharing the class A ’73 type output stage that Heritage Audio is famous for.
Right off the bat, I saw that the Successor has a SSL style meter, which I love. Going across the front, I’ll go through the different knobs that are on this beautiful piece of hardware. I see we have Dynamics in and out first, threshold, which is clickable so it will be easy to recall, ratios from 1.5 up until full limit, variable Attack and Release times, a Sidechain Filter, which is always wondrous when it comes to letting low frequencies breathe, the makeup control, external sidechain enable, and then a blend control. That blend control is really nice; you could use it on drum parallels, or even in a mix, and then annihilate the mix and then blend it back in, which is always a good function!
When I began using it, I noticed that it was immediately doing something, even at the default settings, which is fantastic. After adjusting a few settings, I cranked the gain up, so now I am going to put the blend on. I’m going to start with it on dry and bring in the compressor. This is really smart and is what it’s all about for me. I believe this is something plugins have done. They’ve forced manufacturers to think in the same way the creators of plugins do. In the past, plugins have had mixed knobs coming out years before hardware does, now hardware has caught up and everything has these wonderful features. With this knob, the Successor becomes a parallel compressor, because you can immediately blend the dry and the compressor. You could set up two sets inside your DAW - one with the dry and one that was just the compression - and then blend the two, but I like having it on the front of the unit.

Hey Peter. I also use it for vocals in a weird way. Mic to pre-amp then out to splitter then out to the 166 then into the DAW and then into plugin 160's with different compression ratio's applied to each channel with both the 166 and the 160 then I bring them back again into a single channel. Warren did a video on this and it works very well. I m glad I kept it the piece.

Definitely a very specific targeted and focused compressor. Which I guess could be read: vintage. But, if we are all scraping for few db here and there uniquely and tactilely this is a great box for the price to add to a trove of other compressor workhorses. The best part of the video I thought was - clean up of the peaks... and made it sound/value even clearer! Great demo/situations showing it in a unadulterated light vs. polished marketing. Appreciate it Warren and team - best, Dayz

Same here. Basically it's the only two compressors I need and they have raised the bar very high, so now if I want to buy a hardware compressor I have to shell out quite a lot of money if I want it to sound better than these two plugins. Here and there I use the free DC1A 3, too when I just need some auto gain riding with some silky color added. DC8C 3 is just unbelievably good. It would be awesome if Warren would review DC8C.

Warren! Just got a Tegeler Crème after trying a Warm Audio Bus Comp, then Heritage Audio Successor. The Successor was great and I may decide on it unless I end up liking the Tegeler Crème better. At the moment I’d choose the Successor. I really like the power and feel it gives my mixes, but I’ve only just tried a couple of mixes on the Crème. Maybe it’s due to the Successor’s built in Parallel and other features... I’d really love to go all 500 Series, maybe a WesAudio NG500, a Serpent SB4001 or Elysian Xpressor. Then I can add an EQ later... Just need a 500 series Stereo Compressor that can match what the Successor does. Any suggestions very welcomed. Really appreciate your wisdom! Bless You.

Awesome video, I was actually looking at the Successor the other day, it's definitely on my list... While we're on the subject of compression, quick question for you Warren: do you use master bus compression on a regular basis ? (I assumed so, since you're using your SSL when going hybrid) If so, at which stage of the mix do you insert it ? Do you often mix into the master bus compressor (using it as "glue") ? Thanks in advance !

The more I watch this gentlemen the more I realize he's somewhat of a genius in his own right. Great review and great insight and view to your approach. Consistently learn something from your channel. I'm a drum machine/vinyl sample type of producer at the moment. I'm adding hardware to my arsenal as I continue to learn to mix the right way. I have a few Neve eq's and preamps along with the 1176, Tube Tech CL1B and api 5500 hardware units. I have yet to come across a bus compressor that I can settle on. Had narrowed it down to the api 2500 and the smart research c2. The smart is a little too subtle for what I'm personally looking for outside of the crush feature. This Heritage Audio Successor has gotten my attention.

If you have UAD interface make sure you are in Pro Tools mode. This will setup your outputs -> inputs correctly so that when you go out to say a HW comp, you return on the same inputs like an Avid interface would. Ex: Out 5-6 to Bus Comp returns on In 5-6. This makes Pro Tools align the audio accordingly. I have printed the returns & zoomed all the way in to make sure and I haven’t had any phasing issues or comb filtering.

Bought it for a 2-Bus comp option but it wound up living on my drum bus full time. I might only be 30 minutes into mixing a drum kit before I've got it strapped on. On the 2-mix it's just a little too obvious and tuggy (my go-to is TC Master X out into a Tegeler VTC or the Stam SA-4000-MKII). On drums though, fantastic. The Successor goes from a handy peak-tamer to a charging bull. The detented pots are a godsend. Only complaint on the HA is that the two fast attack times are pretty much useless to my ears. Way too fast to be useful.

Could someone explain the sidechain filter to me? At the beginning of the video it doesn't seem to be sidechaining in the way I understand it - using one track to control the compression of another - so why is the filter controlling the frequencies being compressed?
@ChristianCaldeira
@ChristianCaldeira 4 жыл бұрын
Giddy Aunt sidechaining in this situation refers to what the compressor’s threshold detector pays attention to. At 80 and 160, the detector doesn’t react (or reacts far less) to material below those frequencies. The 800 and 3k options create a bump at those frequencies so the compressor reacts to those frequencies more. The 5k option creates a high pass so the compressor doesn’t react (or again, reacts far less) to material under 5k, which allows you to use it as a makeshift de-esser. Cheers!

Have this unit but I'd really prefer 500 Series. Thinking about Wes Audio, Serpent Audio or Elyssia Xpressor.

Can you please explain why there is a difference in sound between dynamics in and dynamics out?
@MirageLinne
@MirageLinne 4 жыл бұрын
Dynamics IN means the compressor is engaged and compressing the signal. Dynamics OUT means that Warren has bypassed the compressor and it's has no influence on the sound in terms of compression. The unit still imparts a sound because it's running through the transformers in the signal path of the compressor. But OUT means no compression is applied.

in this video, it was simply defining when the compressor was engaged or bypassed. All compressors are, by their very nature 'dynamics processors', so when his finger hit that button and it said dynamics in, then the compressor was engaged, when it said dynamics out, it was disengaged - removed from the signal chain; the same as 'bypassed'. The difference you hear when the compressor is engaged, is when that signal (be it drums, bass, or the whole mix) has been compressed; also called squashed, the peak levels are reduced, and along with it, the 'quieter' parts of the material comparatively raised in volume. The lower the threshold, the lower the level at which the compressor reacts, the higher the ratio, the more agressive the gain reduction, the attack & release times adjust how quickly the compression is applied and let go, the makeup gain is used to bring the compressed signal back up in volume and the blend, blends the compressed signal with the original to your taste

That's simply On or Off! Yes, it's more specifically said than just 'on or off', or more likely 'in or out'!

B GE I’m not sure what specifically you’re referring too? However there is just a DI and it’s being saturated with a SansAmp that’s adding a lot of gain, so it might be adding additional noise, however all that matters is how it sounds in the track, not in solo.

I reckon you should redo this vid, you are hanging around 50 micro second attack which is basically the fastest setting in an 1176, no one is ever really going to go that fast? I think the biggest downside of this compressor is the lack of a 3ms and 10ms attack time. Its really a limiter. I would have liked to hear more of the 5ms and 20ms on a full mix.

Now I feel a bit like an idiot...but I didn't like it when using it in it's extremes. I liked it better with a little more subtlety. I think it definitely needs an indicator LED when blend is engaged.

Telling us about ratio is a bit entry-level. There are plenty of other guys on KZfaq, that are not of your caliber, that can deal with this. ;-) (My favorite comp is the dbx 160A. It works Marvelous on BD, SN, Vocals, and great on a lot other shizzle too, but are SO fast to dial in.)
