"Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the obvious choice. But that has been covered. "There She Goes" The La's "Valerie Loves Me" Material Issue "I Wanna Be Your Dog" Uncle Tupelo. It's like The Stooges song that was covered by Hank Williams disciples. Singer Jeff Tweedy later founded Wilco. "Killing in The Name" Rage Against The Machine.

I think any song from NIN's Downward Spiral would be perfect for this kind of analysis. Reznor and Flood really did some studio "wizardry" on this one. To this day, it still sounds so creative and singular... Anyway, I love these videos, very well done and informative! Thanks Warren for everything you do on this channel. It's a real gold mine!

Another great video and another reminder how little talent I have! :) I wrote a couple of months after Taylor’s passing. In that time I've picked up a guitar (and have an even greater appreciation of ALL musicians) and booked myself and my kids a trip from NZ to London for the tribute concert...because I had to for my soul and their lifelong memory! This music is so good, so complex, so powerful and now, more than ever, so healing. Everlong is truly an amazing song and along with Elton John's "Saturday night" has the best lines ever written and incorporated into a song!: "Gotta promise not to stop when I say when!"

I recall thinking the day of Letterman's last show (before it aired) what would happen on that show. Knowing how much he loved that song and that band, I predicted he'd have them on one last time to play it. Then it gets to the end of the show and it seems like he's signing off...then introduces the band, they start playing and then the montage starts. Watching 30 years of my life going back to middle school fly before my eyes to the tune of one of my favorite songs literally made me cry.

Thanks as always Warren. Truth be told, I honestly never heard of nor appreciated Everlong until 2020 when preteen musical prodigy Nandi Bushell challenged Dave Grohl to their now classic online 'Drumoff'. I've always held Dave in high regard for his musical prowess and everyday man persona. However he presented such an charmingly affable and all too humble disposition in the face of such a cheeky force of nature that he has since garnered my vote as the most righteously genuine rock legend alive bar NONE..

Ah one of the few riffs that I have learned on guitar. I didn't know that about how he came up with guitar riffs and associated them with the drums. Being a drummer, it totally made sense hearing it described that way. I have always wondered how a guitarist picks what style to use with their picking hand. Thanks for the great content as always Warren!

I love how you guys spelled "Color" the American way at 10:56 in the video, but the actual album title spells it "Colour", the British spelling. Ha! 🤣 Also, Dave tells a great story (I think) on VH1 Storytellers about how Dave met Bob Dylan, and Bob asked Dave how to play this song. Dave thought to himself, "I'm done." Great story, great song, great video. Thanks, Warren!🎸

Another excellently insightful video detailing the making of and all those underlying subtleties as well the big & loud elements! When you mentioned coming to California in the mid 90’s and into the latter decades; you mentioned a bunch of undeniable bands, but left out one that was everywhere in that era and still hugely influential currently and that is Green Day. They have a number of songs, that changed music, but I’m sure you pick one out for a future video. Myself and many others would love to understand more about their composition and production techniques.

IIRC, Dave tracking the drums on the album in studio led to tension that caused drummer William Goldsmith to leave the band. Ruthless? Sure. But Dave certainly had the sound that he wanted in his mind. Dave served the song and album. BTW, Goldsmith's replacement was Taylor Hawkins.

Sonic Youth definitely used a major 7th with a stabbing rhythm somewhere. So I can see why he thought that. But there's nothing so distinctive about a single chord that it would count as "ripping someone off." In the end, it was never going to sound like Sonic Youth any more than Sonic Youth could sound like Foo Fighters. I like that he ran it by them though. BTW, this interview with Bradley Cook is one my favorites you've done. I still watch the "My Hero" session breakdown all the time. Those guitar and drum tones are go-to references for me. Just perfect rock tones.

Great song and the very first FF one I'd ever heard, and it made me go and buy the 'Color And The Shape' album shortly after 😀👍 Unbelievable that's 25 years ago now! 🤯 I've also always loved the lyrics, and most of all the drumming; I wonder if Dave had lowered his hi-hat from his usually insanely high set-up in order to be able to play those constant and very fast 16th notes on it accurately?! 😀

As Brad Said (not sure if you watched the whole video?) there were two telephones. One on the speaker and one being recorded. Which makes perfect sense, creates isolation and I’m not sure if you worked in analog or not, but we didn’t have to deal with latency. Thanks
