Peter Gabriel has always been my favourite artist - but the reality is Phil was an absolute beast. A monster of a songwriter, an awesome singer, and an unrivalled drummer. Talk about a ringer!

The Tony Banks solo album A Curious Feeling is so underrated. One of my all time favourite albums.

Only just found this. I saw Genesis in 1969-70 at the Clouds disco in Derby , we were all sat on the floor, I was immediately taken by Peters introduction to each song with a weird story!..I was the only female in the audience and have been an avid fan since. I have introduced many female friends to Genesis over the early years and sold my original L.P. collection to raise money for Guide Dogs as I am now at 72, a puppy raiser for the charity. I love to relax with the headphones on watching their DVDs and listening to their stuff on CD.

Great video! Unfortunately some errors have crept in this one: @5:23 That's not Daryl Stuermer, that's Jean-luc Ponty. Daryl was one of the guitarists in Ponty's band. @12:14 Tony did not use the DX7 on Abacab, it wasn't even released at that time. He did use the NED Synclavier on some of the tracks (notably Another record and the B-side Me and Virgil). Ironically, Genesis did not get rid of the tambourines, both Abacab and the Genesis album are littered with tambourine overdubs, perhaps even more so than on Duke. Mama was released in 1983, not 82 :) That's all does not have the MXR Phaser on the Synclavier (as far as I can tell, the Synclavier was never processed with modulation effects, mostly because it already had chorus as part of some of the sounds, he only used a compressor to keep the dynamic range consistent between lead and chord work-it's not velocity sensitive-and a Roland SDE2000 delay). Most of the bass on That's all is also the Synclavier (same organ patch, just in the low register). The CP70 also ran through the Roland JC120 amp. MXR was used for regular organ sounds which were provided by the Prophet 10. It's Gonna Get Better has that sound very prominently. The SHBTS jam, I think the story was that Phil was actually absent and they programmed the groove on the Simmons. Then picking the sections they liked. Bank's more important additions to his keyboard rig of 1991 were the Korg Wavestation and Ensoniq VFX. These two keyboards make for 80% of the sounds on that album. Not touched up on in this video but worth noting: compare the drumsound from In the air tonight with the one from Mama. The arrangement idea of breaking in with loud drums is the same but the actual drum sound is very different. Rutherford experimented a lot with guitar synths since And then there were tree. Burning Rope features the Arp Avatar and it sounds like the Hexfuzz was used a lot too. The Avatar also made appearances on Duke. Genesis album had a lot of GR300, most prominently on Home by the sea. He also used the Roland Compuphonic (also known as the Promars, kind of like a jupiter 4) for bass synth sounds (like on It's gonna get better). Another point which deserves some recognition is that Genesis was very key in live lightning technology. It was Genesis who funded Showco for the development for lights which could change colour, shape, and would move. The Varilite (named as such by their manager Tony Smith). Genesis premiered these lights on the Abacab tour and captivated audiences and professionals. Especially In the Cage would utilise the fast movements and colour changes. The Mama tour had a very impressive lightning rig where all the beams were motorised and move. This allowed for the rig itself to change shape in addition to the lights being able to rotate and tilt.

As a drummer, Genesis was a HUGE influence on my musical development. I came to know them post-Gabriel but appreciate all of their catalogue. Thanks for the in-depth review of this great band.

I was always amazed that even after making the more radio friendly songs, they still sounded like Genesis. That prog sound of their early material actually made it to the top of the charts. For years!

I grew up in the 80s and Invisible Touch was my favourite album as a teenager. During Covid, I finally got around to going back and listening to their earlier albums, starting with Abacab and working back to Trespass. Oh my God. I had no idea what I'd been missing. I still love the later albums though. Some of the best songs of the 80s are on Genesis and Invisible Touch. I'm glad you noted the influence of New Wave music, which I think 80s Genesis came closer to than most people acknowledge,

No collection of artists can top the five members of the classic Genesis line up. Period. Imagine all of them being together for five albums and all the music they've created and a nod to Anthony Phillips who is stellar in his own rights.

Really enjoyed this chronological journey of one of my favorite bands. I could write a few paragraphs right now, but I'll be brief. Tony Banks owned an Ensoniq VFX keyboard in the early 1990s. I don't know if he ever recorded with it, but he did tour with the VFX. I know because I was Ensoniq's service manager and Tony's keyboard tech needed spare VFX parts during the tour which I shipped to specific venues. On a separate topic; during the summer 1981, Genesis played New York's Forest Hills Tennis Stadium on a night when I was free. So I drove to the stadium without a ticket but with $20 in my pocket. Met a guy who sold a $20 ticket - a great seat and it was an outstanding summer night concert. They played Suppers Ready. I'll cherish that night as long as I live. By the early 1980s, Genesis fans were voluminous, they knew the words to every song and little did we know what lay ahead. Warren, you captured the nuance of those exciting years in this video. I realize this is outside the scope of your discussion, but Genesis had a massive effect on the touring industry through their incredibly innovative lighting and stage designs. They help fund the development of the first 'intelligent' light fixture, the VariLite w/ their production company ShowCo. But outside of the technology, the designer(s) they used had brilliant ideas. When I was a small time semi-pro lighting designer I used to shamelessly rip off some of the things they did like using mirrors to redirect light beams to make it look like more fixtures than you actually had. (Used on the Then Their 3 tour, prior to the VariLite) The second to last tour (the one before 'Last Domino') had one of the most amazing stage designs I've ever seen. The 3 layers of lighting was spectacular. The 'When in Rome' DVD is a great chance to see this, along w/ behind the scenes of the development of the tour. Thank you for your excellent video btw.

As a just music lover, the way you present this great band, makes me wish I would be able to play an instrument, and understand it even better. I was on the Invisible Touch concert in Basel in 1987. The first song they played was "Mama", after all of us got soaking wet by a heavy summerrain. It still gives me goosebumps now, 35 years later. What a band and history!

Yes. God bless them and you and your team for these videos. I was 14 when I first heard Home by the Sea at the local "disco club". I was astonished. So, some time later my aunt came up with this "cassette". She had asked me which band I liked and I said Genesis although I only new that "genesis" album. The cassette was Nursery Cryme and I was mind blowed for the second time. I was buzzled and a bit angry or I could say dissapointed ,for that was not the sound of HBTS or Mama, nor the music at all. Time went on and as I always did, I kept listening to the cassette and that Album became the entering gates into being a Prog Rock fan .

Great job on one of the greatist bands ever. By the way I believe that was Jean Luc Ponty not Daryl Strummer on the photo though they do look very simeller.

Thank you for this Warren. I am 65 and have been a massive Genesis fan since their inception all the way through the end. I am also a big fan of all the member's solo careers. Phil Collins is my absolute favorite drummer of all time. Musical AF and chops to burn. There are just too many incredible songs to pick a favorite. Back In New York City, The Cage, Watcher Of The Skys, Los Endos, Wot Gorilla, Blood On The rooftops....I could go on and on.

Absolutely brilliant videos! I too am a huge fan of what I consider to be all 3 eras of Genesis. The Peter Gabriel era, early Phil Collins, which for me includes A Trick of the Tail (my favorite Genesis album) through And Then There Three, and the later Phil Collins era, Duke through Dance. I refuse to call it a “pop” era because while they were more radio friendly songs, they were still distinctly Genesis. Nobody else sounded like them and nobody else could write music like that. And the biggest misnomer in rock music for me is the idea that it was Phil who made them more commercial. The fact is that Tony and Mike were always the chief songwriters and chief conceptual leaders of the band both in the studio and live.

Love the commentary on all of the equipment and studio outfitting. I know the music and lyrics so well but the evolution of the equipment used by each member was fascinating. Especially liked the way the equipment added roughness to Phil’s voice and how Tony samples Mike’s guitars through his keyboards.

i always enjoy your documentaries, and you're doing a great job, both on the information, and the graphic presentation. a little longer audio snippets would be nice, but i don't know if that's not a copyright problem. basically you make the "behind the music" for music makers, and the production/gear/studio/workflow information is much appreciated, and something that separates your videos from those on vh1, in its day. i like this balance between the bios, discography, studio anecdotes, collaborations - al the info on the jacket/booklet - and the technical side. i also enjoy your love for music, which we all share.

Have had the privilege of meeting them all over the years. Most surprising was Steve Hackett, with Kim Poor in the audience at the Hammy Odeon to see Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel and Steve Harley for a benefit gig for Bill Duffield who was a lighting engineer who unfortunately died early on Kate's 1979 UK tour. From memory Steve / Kim were sitting in M13 & 14. Gabriel backstage at Reading in the same year. Kept bumping into Phil during the summer of 79, Glastonbury with Gabriel, Reading again with Gabriel (brilliant encore of The Lamb lies down with both singing), then a few weeks later at The Venue in Victoria, London where Brand X and Bruford were playing a double header. He was in front of the stage being grabbed for autographs, when down and said " Hi Phil, how you're going ", to which he said "Oh, hi Tone, long time no see", had a quick chat and wished him luck for the gig. The autograph hunters were somewhat miffed as he quickly left to go back stage. Also met both Phil and Peter at Selhurst Park in 1983. Phil stepped in at the last minute as Jerry Marotta had food poisoning, however on the night Jerry was fit to play, but both doubled up towards the end of the set. This was also the last time Phil Lynnot played, he unfortunately died a week later. Met Messrs Banks & Rutherford and Tony Smith coming out of the old Charisma Records office in Ladbroke Grove, probably around 1987. Never met Darryl, but spoke with Chester after he played with Phil on his 1985 Australian tour. The one person still on my list is Chris Stewart, not so much as a drummer, but for his books based around Andalucia.

Fantastic reportage, well done! I was so lucky to see them in 1977 and 1978 in Zurich. The '77 Zurich concert was recorded in a good audio quality (for that time) and may be listened to on KZfaq. Genesis has always been and will continue to stay my favorite rockband.

I turned 60 this year, I've been listening to Genesis since 1976, when I first heard the Lamb. I watched Phil and the band walk off stage at the O2 Arena to a standing ovation. I play Suppers Ready most days. Yesterday, I decided I would like to learn to play piano, not knowing anything about music, and chose Mad Man Moon as the first piece to learn. A day later I can manage the treble (right hand) for the first eight bars. I'm smiling inside with pleasure! The Bass; (Left hand) may take a few more weeks......

Great job, Warren! You summed it up beautifully. Obviously there are a million more details that could be elaborated upon, but that is the brilliance of Genesis. They wrote their own book... and it has many chapters.

Thanks for this documentation about Genesis.I can't answer your question about my fav tune throughout all the decades. In the earlys, me wasn't thinking about one tune or song, it was a whole album concept that was the adventure and story. It changed in time to single tracks and tunes later. To answer it somehow, every decade has it's Genesis album or song for me. I'm thankful about they being part of my life. My personal fav timeless one is Trespass. I got my tickets for Peters i/o 2023 tour and can't await it.

Great video! Genesis was an amazing breeding ground for fantastic musicians. Let's not forget Anthony Phillips, who had an amazing career post Genesis. The Geese and the Ghost is a masterpiece of pastoral prog.

Warren, these vids are doing a great job of historical documentation in a very concise but respectfully heartfelt packages. Thanks for this double feature on one of my favorite bands (I still have the tape I recorded off the late night King Biscuit Flour Hour radio broadcast of the Invisible Touch tour!). I more often credit Rush as most influencing my arranging and composing, but Genesis' influence cannot be denied.

My favourite album from the Peter Gabriel era is “Selling England by the Pound” and my favourite album from the Phil Collins era is “Abacab”, both are fantastic albums and have some great synth solos too!! 😁👍

Genesis are in my top 5 favorite bands. Every single album has something I enjoy, and some are 5 star classics. The 80s era Genesis/Phil Collins sound actually had a huge impact on the sound of hip hop according to interviews I have seen. In fact Bone Thugs had a minor hit from the early aughts which sampled Collins' Take Me Home.

I was a teen in the 80's. Genesis came to me in 1983 through MTV. I love the playfulness of the video, and the song was contagious. I was hooked. Eventually I made it to the record store, and back the their back catalog was readily available back then. Each cassette was an adventure unto itself. I loved it all. The summer of 1986 Genesis, and their associated acts were everywhere. The radio dial was saturated with Genesis, Phil Collins, Mike + the Mechanics, Peter Gabriel, GTR. Phil also worked with Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, Tears for Fears, Frida of Abba, The Prince's Trust concerts, Band Aid, and that little concert with the Concorde stunt. For me I loved it. It is the soundtrack of my life. Thank you for these videos the technical aspects always get lost in the "story" of Genesis. That gated drum sound changed the world. I loved their use of technology all around. They had one of the best light shows ever. They invested in Vari-light from the beginning and it became the standard for concert lighting. Tony Banks solo material is an amazing look into one of the most prolific minds of music. There are many hidden gems.

Thank you so much for doing this Warren. Like you, I have the appreciate for the FULL BREADTH of what Genesis is from "Revelation" to We Can't Dance. As a keyboard guy and classically trained, early Genesis and Tony Banks was (and is) my idol. I am much more a composer and less comfortable with performing as was he so I always felt him a kindred spirit. I especially enjoyed your commentary and technical background information which I always find fascinating. For years I tried to get that damn Slipperman sound from 3 Sides Live finally realizing I was not going to get it because the Quadra had 2 independent portamento's. Sure wish I knew that before I spent hours trying to get that sound on my modern Roland!

I became a Genesis fan with the Genesis and Invisible Touch albums and worked my way back over the years. Yeah they made pop in 1980s but of really high quality. Popular, mainstream music that one didn't need to be ashamed of liking. 🙂

Thoroughly excellent work as usual Warren. 🙏The snobs who seek to decry the second Genesis era as inferior pop music need to get over themselves - it is amongst the best ever pop music, and incredibly consistent. I like the term Prog Pop, it's very appropriate for their second era.
