MELODRAMA really is aging like the finest wine because the lyrics and the experimental production/sound really is so fucking fresh and real and raw. I think Lorde was focused on being minimalist but not lacking because she wanted to showcase her songwriting to let it speak for itself. She's one of the greatest lyricist of our time. She just needs a little help from her production and both of them combined, you'll create this unique sound wherein it can't be replicated.
@jnthnofficial

I personally do not think it is minimalistic at all, it is the opposite. Does anyone else think that more and more "pop" artists are staring to create music that's not meat to be played "on the radio" or be "pop hits" but just music that they actually want to create? I hope this tendency gets so infectious that more famous artists like Shakira or Coldplay start to make the music they really want to create. First off, Melodrama absolutely the most incredible piece of music Jack Antonoff has produced and also Lorde is insanely creative. The metallic swaying sound at the end of Hard Feelings sounds just like a swing on a playground that’s a little rusted! I’d kill to see the behind the scenes on this album. Melodrama made reputation and Halsey's album, that album set new standards for pop music production since it's been released, so it's not like Lorde sounds like Taylor, Halsey or Billie but they were straight up influenced by Lorde's music.

Lol no. When he says melodrama sometimes sounds like reputation he doesn't mean Lorde was inspired by Taylor. It's just an easier way to describe the "feel" of the production. The similarity between the two is all Jack Antonoff. Now, Halsey I agree; she does attempt to mimic some of the stuff lorde does but it falls short, tho Manic was a good album

listen, i've literally been listening to this album for three years on a weekly basis, and i never would've connected that it sounded similar to taylor's reputation, which only came out 4 months after this album. usually i'm pretty good at noticing details like that in music, but that totally flew by me, and *that's* why i like your reactions. you always give a detailed narrative that only someone like yourself can do, being so involved in the music crowd and industry. because there’s really only a small handful of other good music reaction channels on youtube, such as ajay, ashley ippolito, zach campbel & kioshiwarrior (and dylan will not participate, but he stopped), that give insightful and enjoyable reactions, but of course their videos are based more on their opinions and simply how they react to the song; their personas. you do that, *and* talk about the music itself in a really informing, yet entertaining way. AND, you leave in everything, which is awesome. also i love your shirts and zebra mug, they're rad.

I wanted to add some comments on your interpretations from the album's production. On Green Light, the vocal distortion at the end is actually the use of an electric guitar. Despite the minimalist sound of Sober, the song uses a combination of bongos, trumpets, and saxophones; Lorde actually hid the sound of a tiger's roar before the start of the bridge. You are correct on Liability - those are guitar strums you hear in the background. The Placebo song you referenced on The Louvre is actually a cover. The original artist is Kate Bush and she served as melodic and vocal inspiration for the album, especially on Writer in the Dark. I also want to note that reputation dropped 5 months after Melodrama. I highly recommend you to react to Pure Heroine. She wrote the entire album by herself and one co-writer (Joel Little) between the ages of 14 and 16. A lot of Melodrama, in turn, was written when she was 18 and 20.

also that song you mentioned "running up that hill" is originally by an artist called kate bush, she was one of the greatest singer/songwriters/artists of her time if i'm honest, that part in writer in the dark where you mentioned the creepy element, i'd refer to that as a histerical voice, which kate bush also liked to do sometimes, honestly you should react to one or 2 of kate bush's albumns, i think you'd find them interesting for sure.

That placebo “running up that hill” track you referenced is actually a cover of Kate Bush who originally did the track, and I think you’d dig the similarities between Lorde and Kate as well. Bush is definitely a huge influence on Lourdes sound. It’s so interesting that you picked up that vibe!

Fun fact: The drums used at the beginning of "Loveless" is a sample of "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins (one of the most famous drum sequences; I've listened to this album 50+ times and just found out last week)

nobody is gonna talk about how its a concept album where each song represents an hour of a party that lorde is at? ok.

where did you hear that? I’ve never heard that nor have I ever listened to it with that in mind. to me it’s always been a LOOSE concept album about a relationship that ended. I’m pretty sure lorde said it was a loose concept album bc she wanted everyone to interpret it in their own way.

This album deserves 1000 Grammys... Lorde is like Halsey but with more surprises in her music. So artistic. Also if you're into jack antonoff stuff you should listen to norman fucking Rockwell. That's a greatttt album and the production is amazing.

To me this is a pre-thunderstorm summer day album. You know, when the air is heavy and it’s humid. That’s when I love to listen to it. Very specific, but I love it.
