used pine pitch for a long time. Only drawback - it can't get too warm once on the piece, sometimes the hot sun warms it up again

I’ve been making pine pitch for awhile and from my studies it’s quite bulletproof when you start to mess around with it scientifically

Very interesting, would be great to get them into a test house and see what their capability is compared to modern adhesives.

come on, modern adhesive is like comparing a handaxe with a 50 calibre machine gun. They glue cars and planes together, not arrows and the like. Admire the achievement for what it is, for how much effort it took to arrive at, not what it isn't. Having said that the ziggurats of the fertile crescent still are proofed by tar brick and have survived for 5,000 years.

I don't have experience which glue is really better for which purpose, but to make and work with, pine resin smells way better than birch bark tar. I can not imagine they really use this stinky stuff as "anti-mosquito cream" in some scandinavian countries - but they say in some regions there they have not 4, but just 2 seasons: Winter and Mosquito.

I was surprised you weren't making fish glue. Delighted but surprised nonetheless. I'd only heard of one of these you're doing. Btw - your videos deserve far more likes than they get.

Experimenting with prehistoric glue is great fun - thanks for the pointers Will. I've been using an even mix of crushed pine resin and grated beeswax today to reinforce the joints on a large hazel wood storage box. Out of interest have you found any successful stone age technology for distilling the birch tar? I cheat by using a biscuit tin!

It's possible to find clay by rivers and streams which you can use to make pottery and you could use it to fix up a little distiller

You are reducing your birch glue in a metal container. I am trying to imagine how that was done in the pre metal ages. Maybe a hollow in a flat rock?

eyh man I have a big problem with keeping track of your uploads because your content is branded as "intended for children" you really need to speak to KZfaq about that so I can activate the subcription bell and get notifications from you. Love what you do and might take a crack at it myself in the future, keep the great work up!

Why don't you make hide glue?

Very interesting Will. I have been wondering about the possibility of a glue from pine resin combined with cherry resin. The reason being I came across a very old cherry tree with sap resin coming from a split and it was very flexible but not too sticky . Sadly I didn't get enough for a trial batch but maybe a future video for you if you can find cherry sap too .
@10000yearsbc
@10000yearsbc 3 жыл бұрын
I've experimented with wild cherry resin, and it's different to pine resin. I find it easier to crush the resin before making glue, rather than heating it all in chunks. Resin on its own can end up quite brittle - mixing it with beeswax makes it more pliable.

@@10000yearsbc because cherry resin is not actual resin, but a byproduct of an infection - it is called gumming and yeah.

Hi, I would really like to know how long hide/bone glue takes to set properly, given that it was thickened enough beforehand?

hornbows are cured for 6 months but this is for fish bladder glue, if I remember correctly
@timporsch2669
@timporsch2669 3 жыл бұрын
@@slalomsk8er397 I believe to remember a similar claim for egyptian composit bows, but always thought that it seems like an awfully long time to invest. That is why I'd like to know if that just might have to do with the consistency/ water content? of the glue you start out with. Of course if it really (always) takes that long then it's just how it is.

hot hide glue cures very quickly but takes a long time to cure fully, like an exponential curve. very short open time, at basically full strength after a couple of days. i think it took a long time to set in Egypt because it's so hot there, they had to wait until winter for it to cure properly?
@timporsch2669
@timporsch2669 3 жыл бұрын
@@gramursowanfaborden5820 Wouldn't it cure faster? maybe too fast? Also, I can't remember if it was an actual piece of written or inferred archaeological evidence. It might simply have been an experimental recreation which didn't turn/work out so well, because of a lack of evidence and/or experience at the time.
@gramursowanfaborden5820
@gramursowanfaborden5820 3 жыл бұрын
@@timporsch2669 it's possible it could cure too fast, but protein glues like that can be re-melted and used again, it might be that intentionally making it set over a very long period of time keeps it at the critical state for longer, and provides a much stronger join. experimentation is evidently necessary!
