Stephen Street aka “Streety” is an English music producer best known for his work with The Smiths, The Cranberries and Blur. Street collaborated with Morrissey on his debut album Viva Hate following the split of The Smiths.
More recently he has worked with Kaiser Chiefs, Babyshambles and The Courteeners.
In 1992, Street started working with Irish band The Cranberries on their debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?. The album turned out to be a huge success in the U.S. It reached number one on both the UK and Irish albums charts The album spent a total of 86 weeks on the UK chart. On 24 June 1994, it became the fifth album in rock history to reach number one more than a year after release. At the end of 1995, it ranked as the 50th best selling album in Australia. It reached number 18 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart and stayed on this chart for 130 weeks; the album shipped six million copies there.
In 1994, Street worked with the band again on their second album No Need to Argue. It is the band’s best selling album, and has sold 17 million copies worldwide as of 2014. It contains the band’s most successful single, “Zombie”. The album’s mood is darker and harsher than that on Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?, released a year before.
Following two albums with different producers, the band worked with Street again on their 2001 album Wake Up and Smell the Coffee. The album sold 170,000 copies in the US by April 2007. Worldwide, the album had sold 1,300,000 copies by 2002. Street also worked on the two extra tracks that were recorded for their 2002 best of album Stars: “Stars” and “New New York”.
After The Cranberries went on hiatus in 2003, guitarist Noel Hogan began working on a solo work then titled Mono Band. Street worked with Hogan in producing the album of the same name released in 2005.
Street also produced their sixth studio album Roses, released in 2012. He also produced their final album In the End, released in 2019.

That was great, really interesting to hear Stephen Street’s experience of working with them and that classic scenario of having a great album with singles but nobody believing in it. I don’t think enough credit is given to those incredible harmonies on the lead vocal, as intervals go those two harmonies are just perfection. Worked with a band on later with Jools Holland years ago the same night the Cranberries were on and was impressed with how together they were musicality and how great Dolores’ vocal sounded in the room.

Iconic band, iconic voice. The Cranberries are timeless. They were my first concert, I'll never forget that moment in Atlanta seeing Dolores on stage. It was my first model of the magic of what a singer could do. Timeless. Love this video above, Stephen - really beautiful back stories. Thank you. Xx

I REALLY enjoyed that interview. And learning about how that amazing band made their music. The producer/engineer always tends to be the unsung member of the band, be that live or recorded. 22 St. Stephen’s Green. It opened as Keystone Studios in 1979 before being taken over by Windmill Lane in 1984. It was called Windmill Lane 2 and the Cranberries were the last band to record there apparently as it shut in 1990. The main Windmill Lane Studio closed the same year and moved a short distance (1km) to 20 Ringsend Road, into an Art Deco, former power station for the Dublin Tram company and is still operating.

Great stories. Thanks Warren! Everytime I watch your videos I am more inspired to follow my muse. Getting ready to release an EP but it's not easy to promote your music when we're still waiting for the performance venues to open. Also not sure which distributor to use. What do you think of Amuse? I like the idea that there is a possibility of them providing some support for their successful artists. Best wishes to you. l am looking forward to future videos.

@@Producelikeapro I am setting the lyrics around an incident I witnessed where the enemy used children to shield their attack on our convoy. The children and everything in the area where destroyed by A10s and helicopter gunships even though we tried desperately to call them off . The song continues to describe my recurring dream where now the kids are me and my childhood friends. How I silently scream from them to run but they don’t . How I know every weapon system that cuts them down till they turn on me and wake covered in sweat and the smell permeating my soul.

Yes, the song, like most anti-war songs lends itself to reinterpretation. I add my own verse to the end, with snippets taken from the slightly changed lyrics of the Zombie 'Tribute Cover' by Bad Wolf... Another song that is similar is - Dell Amitri's - 'Nothing Ever Happens' = These kind of songs are timeless gems.

@@gilbertspader7974 - I'm ex military too... Sometimes it takes serving to open one's eyes to the never-ending horror that is warfare. I began to see through the military industrial complex, whilst serving (nuclear subs) and the so-called 'foreign interests' that enable it, not forgetting the money tree for those investing in the death of innocents. . And I have to say, those eyes were opened paritially by experimenting in mind altering substances and hanging out with gentle people. I left the RN in the early eighties, thankfully before the Falklands debacle (I've never agreed with the notion that those islands belong to the UK...). In fact even the concept of soveriegnty is now an anathema to me.

I remember when I heard Linger on the radio for the first time, I immediately stopped what I was doing, it was really striking. Dolores had such a unique voice. Strange how sometimes something new and unique isn’t always recognized at the time. Dreams will always be a special song for me, it got me through a very tough time. Thanks for this episode, it’s so interesting to hear the stories behind the music.

By far my favourite album of the 90s. I saw them play the College Bar in UCC, probably 1991, in a crowd of 7 people. My brother had the cassette tape they released in Limerick.

The Cranberries are my current band of the month, so I've been revisting those first two albums particularly . Zombie is an amazing song, as it so often the case, its simplicity works so well. I was reminded of Zombie after having watched - Army of the Dead on Netflix... It left Zombie as a 'lingering' earworm and when that happens, I have to pick up the guitar and learn it! . So yes, it's been a Cranberry month, topped-off by this most excellent interview. Well done Warren and Steve. . The world lost another amazing artist in 2018, so tragically. Dolores voice was so unique. RIP. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I don't like Fender twin reverbs either. The Vox is a much better studio and live amp. Status Quo, Queen just to name two bands of the countless many that the AC30 has powered. I've got a small Vox semi-valve and it's pretty good... Not as good as AC30, but where I live, that is just as well.

They used to use a studio called Xeric in Limerick, ran by Pearse Gilmore who was a great producer too, I did some demos there back in early nineties

I just listened to 'Odie To My Family' but actually didn't hear any out-of-tune singing - but the wrong C-note in the bass line sticks out to me like a sore thumb! 😄 And I had to refresh my memory in regards to how 'Dreams' went, and it turned out to be their song that was included in the soundtrack to the 'You've Got Mail' movie, now over 20 years ago 🙂

I’ve always been curious about Ode To My Family. The album version is roughly 1/2 a key higher (but not exactly) than all other instances of this song. You notice if you try and play along. I wondered if this was the result of a last minute decision to lift the tempo of the song by speeding it up a bit, resulting in the pitch also increasing?

"Linger" had so many incarnations, many lives. The Cranberries really blew up with their second album in France. They were big there from 94 onwards, all over the radio. So, what happened? The radio stations started to play "Linger" from the first album, and it did become a hit two to three years after its initial release most people weren't even aware of.

I’m REALLY into rock from the 70s and 80s. Anything from Led Zep and Queen to Bon Jovi snd Mötley Crüe. But for whatever reason, in the past year, I’ve started to listen more and more to rock from the mid-90s, which is when I was in college, 19-22 or so years old. I know the stories of the recording of most albums I like inside and out from the 80s and the 70s, but know almost NOTHING about rock and alternative stuff from the 90s because, truth be told, after a while, I shunned all that music because I saw it as “the one to blame” for taking away the success from the bands I liked from the 80s. I saw Warrant, Winger, et al being ignored by a public that used to buy their albums by the millions. So I ended up hating anything that came out after Nirvana. Needless to say, I’m 46 years old now, a photographer and still a musician and songwriter, and I’m lucky enough to have started to reopen my eyes once again and see all the GOOD that came out of the 90s. After all, many of these songs I DID like, it was the public’s reaction to the OTHER bands that I hated. So I’ve been listening to a lot of AIC, Stone Temple Pilots, The Cranberries (still have the cassette of their first album!), and others from the time. I’ve been watching the MTV Unpluggeds and other stuff on KZfaq, and I wanted to thank you. A LOT. These kinds of interviews are REALLY eye-opening for me because during recording sessions, I know what it was like for hard rock bands from 30-40 years ago from a myriad interviews and videos, etc. But I know nearly NOTHING about these other, 90s bands, who were my contemporaries, really, since we were around the same age. This interview is fascinating and it’s bringing back nice memories form that time. Weirdly enough, when I started songwriting heavily in 1995, people asked if I liked such and such artists and I wasn’t a fan of any of them. Thing is, as much of a fan of Bon Jovi and all those as I was, when I started songwriting, for whatever reason, I drew from the most varied influences of artists in both Spanish and English and my music sounded NOTHING like the rock I loved. But I loved it. It was MINE. And five years later I ended up signing as a songwriter with Universal Music Publishing. Stayed signed on for 15 years, nothing really big happened but I was able to say that I did it. When so many of my musician friends left their dreams, I pushed on until I got SOME of what I wanted (I actually wanted to be HUGELY famous, but anyways). These interviews somehow let me live vicariously a variety of “what could’ve been’s”. So, yes, thank you ☺️ great interviews, awesome channel.

Man Cranberries are great ! But I just can't listen to them anymore, everytime I try I start to think about that Adam Sandler "Click" movie, and also remember Dolores is no longer between us, and I got this strange sweat coming out of my eyes.
