In this video, I take you through what a typical day might look like for a Product Manager.
PMs play a crucial role in defining and executing a product strategy that aligns with their company's vision and delivers business value. This video primarily focuses on the execution part of a PM's job, which involves leading the team through four phases to ship impactful features.
I share what PMs do in their independent time and during their many meetings.

How is different from a Product Designer? Because I did all these tasks as a Product Designer in a Fintech startup.

Good question! There is definitely a lot of crossover and collaboration that happens between Product Management and Product Design, especially in startups where roles might be more fluid. I would say the two main areas that differentiate are: Business & Technology. Business: PMs typically need to have a deep understanding of the business model, market dynamics, user acquisition & retention methods, and metrics. They are responsible for product strategy, prioritization of features, ensuring that the product meets business goals, and aligning stakeholders across the organization. Their main focus is on the "what" and "why" of a product. Technology: While PMs don’t necessarily need to be technically skilled, they need a strong understanding of the technologies in play, potential technical constraints, and how these affect the product roadmap. They collaborate with the engineering team to ensure feasibility and often make decisions based on technological considerations. Product Designers, on the other hand, focus on the user experience and interface. Their primary role is ensuring the product is user-centric, intuitive, and aesthetically pleasing. They consider the "how" of a product - how it looks, how it feels, and how the user interacts with it. While a Product Designer might take on some tasks typically associated with PMs in smaller startups or specific situations, in larger organizations or more traditional settings, the distinction between these roles becomes clearer. Both roles are crucial though - these functions ensure the product is both desirable and viable from a business perspective.

I'll be interning as a PM this summer and have been watching many videos on YT, but this was the most helpful & easiest to understand! Thank you so much. I love that you broke down the process into 4 steps. One quick question. How do you lead teams without having much authority? How do you balance what the engineers are interested in vs business teams' goals?
@ProductManagerAnthony
@ProductManagerAnthony 2 ай бұрын
I think the best way is by establishing relationships through 1:1s, being very thorough with your work and research which builds trust, and constant communication. In terms of engineering initiatives vs business initiatives, teams will usually agree to some type of breakdown like 20% engineering initiatives and 80% business initiatives. Hopefully this helps! Best of luck as a product management intern this summer!

Great video, i find that what youve described as a PM's responsibilities in this video significantly overlaps with a PO role.. for example, the close coordination, work, and drafting of user stories... this is also done by POs (maybe even moreso). Great video, i love that you mentioned more than half the day is spent in meetings!

Hi, I was wondering if you know of any success stories of introverts in the PM role, maybe yourself? After you are in the role for a while are you able to have more control over the amount of meetings you attend? I know a lot of this is role specific, but I'm years away from the role and am just trying to get a better grasp on it. Majoring in Management Information Systems and planning on entering the job market as a business analyst in a couple of years. I think if I could survive the meetings aspect of the PM role I would absolutely love it. Thank you very much for the video and your time.

How important is technical knowledge/background when becoming a pm? Did you ever code during your pm jobs?
@ProductManagerAnthony
@ProductManagerAnthony 3 ай бұрын
I have never coded! I have leveraged SQL though for data analysis purposes. The most important factor is that you understand how technology works (how it can be leveraged, how the pieces fit together, what the limitations are, etc.)
