Low Carb Down Under

2 жыл бұрын

Robert H. Lustig, M.D., M.S.L. is Professor emeritus of Pediatrics, Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He specialises in the field of neuroendocrinology, with an emphasis on the regulation of energy balance by the central nervous system. His research and clinical practice has focused on childhood obesity and diabetes. Dr. Lustig holds a Bachelor’s in Science from MIT, a Doctorate in Medicine from Cornell University. Medical College, and a Master’s of Studies in Law from U.C. Hastings College of the Law.
Dr. Lustig has fostered a global discussion of metabolic health and nutrition, exposing some of the leading myths that underlie the current pandemic of diet-related disease. He believes the food business, by pushing processed food loaded with sugar, has hacked our bodies and minds to pursue pleasure instead of happiness; fostering today’s epidemics of addiction and depression. Yet by focusing on real food, we can beat the odds against sugar, processed food, obesity, and disease.

I read your book about sugar YEARS ago and it helped change my life (and bad health). Then I discovered something else to add to my "quiver" of health wisdom. Time-restricted- eating and fasting. THE #1 rule I learned after much reading was "DO NOT eat after sundown. PERIOD!!" I met a stranger on a golf course earlier this year. One of the guys asked how I stayed so fit (and played golf so well) at my age (70). I briefly said "fasting, organic food, etc." and if they had questions I'd tell them more but I inserted THE #1 Rule for my health - "Don't eat after sundown. PERIOD." There were no questions or more discussion.... Not four weeks later I was hitting balls on the range of that same course and I heard my name. I saw a man walking towards me that i did not recognize. He reintroduced him - "We played about 3 weeks ago." he went on to say that he was a 73 year old man and a LONG time T2D and daily need for insulin. Upon hearing the #1 rule he said to himself (he told me) "What do you have to lose - change one thing." He quit eating after sundown and he said his AM glucose started to decrease. That motivated him. He confessed that he did not change anything else. he still cheated on his diabetes diet and even drank a little beer and wine - as USUAL for him. He then said "I am here to tell you that my morning glucose was 78 - a number I have not seen in a LONG time. I now believe I will be getting off these drugs and will live a MUCH different life than I had feared."

People pay this guy huge sums of money for his courses. Seriously dude, stick with reputable professionals like Dr. Jason Fung a real endocrinologist. And not all these guys that use the term 'Dr' are real medical doctors. Even Eric Berg is a bit shady. Sure most of his information is correct, but he's up to his neck in Scientology 'woo-woo'. According to his son he's a narcissistic scumbag and he also sells expensive products with dubious positive effects. I get where you're coming from, but do background checks on people who make bold claims.

Another thought, I seem to recall that there was 'science' against fat promulgated by that lamentable study out of Harvard University in the late 60's or early 70's, where it turned out that the researcher was paid by the sugar industry. I wonder what you make of the movement to substitute real meat with a plant based alternative. I watched the recent documentary by Craig Reucastle on ABCTV and was struck by the resemblance of the “factories” that are now producing plant based “meat” and those that produced margarine etc. Both have lots of stainless steel and use extreme processing. We can only wonder at what chemicals are being introduced to achieve a “meat” flavour. Frankenstein food!

People aren’t just vegetarian for nutritional reasons, but out of kindness for animals. Actually most of my lacto-ovo-vegetarian friends and I cannot palate the plant based meats nor do we consider it tasty. It just doesn’t taste like the real food we have portioned out from nature as ok to eat. One thing meat doesn’t have a lot of is fiber which Dr. Lustig will say is the most important nutrient. I think the plant based meats may be more to help the group of folks who eat a lot of meat to introduce a different food that “looks” like what they like to have, because not all are ready to jump into eating a bunch of salad every meal. I hope it’s a stepping stone for such folks to get more of the greens their bodies need too. I personally relish salads, and used to like rice and bread until I gave them up (and now don’t even miss).

Wonderful talk by Dr Lustig. Brings balance to 'LCHF'. Real food is: 1. Low in refined sugar 2. Low in processed carbohydrates 3. Low in processed omega6 oils 4 Low in trans fats. L ow refined C arbs and eat H ealthy F ats. As to how low to go in carbs, this should be dependent on the conditions you are treating rather than an absolute cutoff that needs to be applied to everyone. The problem is that we have whole generations who have grown up with nothing but processed food which to them is what they know to be 'real food', so education is the key.

> _The problem is that we have whole generations who have grown up with nothing but processed food which to them is what they know to be 'real food', so education is the key._ And this makes me extremely sad and angry when I think of what all of those people (including me) could've achieved if they ate properly since being in mother's womb. I mean I used to drink sugary beverages on *daily basis.* It's shocking to me now to just think of what I was doing to myself. Even though I was never obese, I was putting body through so much stress it's unbelievable that it kept me alive. Cooking foods in vegetable oils, teflon cookware, eating chips and foods with added sugar... and all that since chilhood because my mother didn't pay attention (not entirely her fault, I blame the corporations behind these ultra processed foods, because they know what they are doing, they are doing internal studies on mices and so on and they know what happens to them eating their products) and I thought that's how people should eat, so I continued eating like that into my adulthood. There are some really evil and sick minded people in the management of those big corporations that make these products. They and their families don't eat those products themselves because they know of the implications of doing so, I bet. Thanks to Dr. Lustig and his team, and other people, and them sharing this information publicly on KZfaq, doing presentations, they are changing our lives for the better.

If you don't eat processed foods then your diet is often indistinguishable from a low carb diet. This is close to how our ancestors ate for millennia and what we evolved to eat - fresh meat and vegetables, with occasional fruit in season. But meat dominates the calories. If you don't have added sugar, vegetable seed oils or refined grains then it's very difficult to become overweight or metabolically unhealthy.

It's not all ignorance, there's also an authority problem. Your individual doctor can't independently decide what "best practice" is and if they don't follow what the professional body has decided is "best" they can face quite serious repercussions and possibly have their ability to practice medicine suspended or removed.

Thank you Sir Always great information It has been fascinating to follow you and your progress through this aspect (key) to health. I don’t find any way of eating that can be simply adopted but strict avoidance of processed food and meat that has been “processed “ by feeding unnatural feed in CAFOs and even well intentioned but mistaken producers. Grass fed beef seems the only safe meat. But as you point out it isn’t lo carb vs lo fat but no fructose and no processed.

Great presenattion. Would have loved him (Dr. Robert Lustug) to address omega-6, seed oils, PUFAs etc. Especially on the 24.40 study with two diets - would love to see what was the difference between saturated fats and polyunsaturated fats. So much processed food has seed oils. Paul Mason at the end does create a lot of good content about it.

This was the best concise encapsulation of the topic I've seen. Thanks. Imagine how much better our financial resources could be allocated if we got off the ultra-processed, hyper-palatable foodstuffs. Sadly, the inertia of the industry and the addiction of the majority will be difficult to reverse. But we should try like hell. Regarding low-carb, it always seemed to me to be the best way to reverse the damage and addictions from chronic sugar/starch overconsumption and create a flexible, fat-burning metabolism that would more efficiently unload the body fat. I'm not convinced that even the real-food LFHC diet would accomplish that as well, without aggressive caloric restriction, which is more difficult to maintain than a satiating diet higher in healthy fats.

Just the aggressive caloric restriction alone due to not being in ketosis would result in lowering your metabolism all by itself, never mind all the things that go with it. Insulin would never get low enough, long enough on such a diet attempt, and eventually most people will fail when they feel like crap on such a caloric restriction as their metabolism also goes down the tubes. There will never be a reunion show for “The Biggest Loser” because the only one that didn’t bounce back to their past weights or similar had surgery: all the others have a low metabolism as a result. Jillian Michaels is a dangerous quack, and all those contestants are proof she has no understanding of what works, certainly as of the time that show was on. Then again, the “conventional wisdom” (a dangerous thing all too often) has been that enough exercise and a restricted caloric intake is how you should lose weight, along with the lie that all calories are equal regardless of the food.

Thank you for stating the obvious in detail. We need people like you to explain the obvious facts to people instead of the lies we get from the toxic food industry. Don't feel let down by a celeb having more influence than experts. Celebs diverted people away from the commercial narratives to you guys. Moreover, C. Ronaldo wasn't speaking as a celeb, he speaks as a highest performing sportsman and a testimony of your research. Celebs show people the 'WHY' and you guys as experts show us the 'HOW'. Neither is less important. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Great information! I like the explanation of eating un-processed foods. Avoiding fruit (fructose) and eating like our grandparents. Meat, Fish, Eggs and High Fat Dairy. I intend to be a "roll Model" of this information and inspire kids, teens and twenty somethings in HOW to eat this way. I am showing this by modeling the foods and how you prepare them in my social media. Thank you for bringing this information for our betterment and a bright Human future!!! Big Smile, SKiMum

A piece of fruit is fine, but it must come, for many of us, out of a very small sugar budget. Prof Lustig tends to talk around this issue, probably to avoid being seen as a “keto fanatic” or something, but the sad fact is that many whole foods and natural foods are NOT good for us in large quantities and our ancestors did NOT cultivate them in mass amounts until VERY recently. Fruit is among them, as is, eg, rice. Prof Lustig says most of the right stuff, but he’s kind of understating how radical of a rethink we need. Fruit can’t be a major calorie source, practically or physiologically. Key question: fat/protein or carbs? Answer for many: almost entirely the former.

Great video. I am skeptical about the "lack of fiber" as cause for some of the eitht points Robert Lustig brings up. The best argument (that I think holds up, somewhat) I have found for fiber is that if you fill up with fiber you will be less inclined to eat other crap. To me it is redundant when there are better ways which avoid the fiber, and its issues, too.

I don't want to nitpick, but high LDL is not dangerous by itself. It does not tell the amount of atherosclerosis progression, because they're not directly related.I don't eat sugar or drink alcohol. I eat healthy natural foods (virtually 0 processed foods) and all my cholesterol values are high, along with HDL. Cholesterol values are highly individual and only 25 % of cholesterol is dietary and your body produces the rest. My older relative has been eating a lot of saturated fats his whole life (he is over 70) and he also has high cholesterol values but absolutely 0 atherosclerosis according to recent medical examination.

Interesting. So how are tests/labs done to see if a problem. Espec of TOFI , do most Dr's know how to ck for? For fatty liver if the MRI (heard Dexa can also), or labs. For insulin resistance or sensitivity? My NMR said insulin sensitive. Am guessing is individual as to how deal with sugars, fructose or glucose even when from"whole foods". Is PC, Hc, MMA, labs useful also?

Actually what Chris Gardner found out was that people who ate low carb diets lost weight a lot faster and lost more weight. I saw that study he did years ago, but now I go back and the conclusions have been changed, you can't comment anymore, and Chris Gardner is a well known vegetarian who is biased against meat consumption.
