Went back and watched the video multiple times sometimes at 0.5 speed. Gaby had the worst yield out of anyone. She cut only 30% of the potato and likewise with the jicama. I kept wondering how with the speed she was going in, she didn't come last. What little she cut, she did well. But she definitely didn't have the flow that someone like Chris, Molly or Brad did. Chris on the other hand, the perfectionist that is he, did have the highest yield and phenomenal technique. Followed by Brad. Thus, Brad wins the challenge (not that anyone except Molly tried)

@Onesmartcookie78429
@Onesmartcookie78429 4 жыл бұрын
@@RachelDavis705 she's actually not. You should never hold a knife with your index finger on top of the blade. It creates instability that you won't find in, say, Brad's hold, where his hand is farther up the knife. I'm not sure how to describe the hold without physically showing someone. Additionally, her non-knife hand is begging for her to chop off her fingers--she doesn't grip the produce safely, which is to say a bear claw sort of hold with the fingers curled in. Ideally, the knife then rests against your knuckles, creating more stability, as well as security, because then it's basically impossible to cut yourself
@RachelDavis705
@RachelDavis705 4 жыл бұрын
@@Onesmartcookie78429 Re-watch the video. Brad, Gaby, Amiel and Andy all have their index fingers on top of the blade, well past the handle of the knife, and are holding it in a similar manner to Priya. Again, she's the only left-handed person and that's why people are nitpicking. No offense, but Priya obviously knows more about cooking than you. If criticizing her in the comments section of a KZfaq video makes you feel good, go for it.

@Rocky-iy8ct 4 жыл бұрын
@@Onesmartcookie78429 I must have missed where she is doing that. The issue I see is that she is fully gripping the handle when her hand should be further forward so that she can pinch the blade with her thumb and index finger. Her technique sucks for sure and I think the title shouldn't be labeling all of these people as professional chefs.

I'm pretty sure this video is our fault😂. (By "our" I mean the people who comment on their videos.) In the Molly makes Strawberry Shortcake video, there was an unplanned lemon squeezing contest. Then people said in the comments that they wanted to see kitchen Olympics, stuff like who can chop the best. And now there's this video. BA has always been pretty good about making things from the comments happen.

I feel like culinary schools that teache these knife cuts (i went to the CIA) do serve a purpose in that it creates speedy efficiency, muscle memory-which relates to speed and helps students get more comfortable using knives. Completely agree. Practicing these type of knife skills makes you both comfortable with the knife but also helps you have consistency in your prep without sacrificing time. It's frustrating to hear Priya talk about how she doesn't understand why anyone would julienne something or why all these prices need to be the same size. It's a real lack of pretty basic, foundational knowlege.
