I think it definitely shows how long he's been in the business. I've been around a lot of guys who have LOTS of experience in whatever they're doing whether it be a career or hobby. A lot of them are like Luke where they try to give advice and answer questions full well knowing that whoever they're talking too probably won't retain or understand every single piece of what they're saying. Anything helps though and the process of veterans helping out newbies in any capacity has always impressed me. For me its fireworks and pyro displays. Whenever I get lucky enough to meet a professional pyro I find that I could easily spend hours talking to them but most of the time I only get an hour or two. So its all about trying to ask them what I view as the most important questions I can think of and try to retain as much as I can from their answer.

I know the soup thing was a joke, but I legit went to a soup dance party once. It was held illegally in an abandoned warehouse and there was just a guy serving free soup out of a huge fucking cauldron to anyone who wanted some. Granted, it was served in cups and not bowls, but eating lentil soup at a warehouse rave definitely felt strange and illegal on more than one level. It was great soup though. Also it was advertised as a soup rave and planned in advance, which is why I trusted the soup.

And despite Cody dismissing it somewhat, it's really worth properly focusing on the basics. Beat-matching, fully understanding phrasing, timing, key harmonics (camelot wheel), and being able to find and predict the patterns in music all set the groundwork that lets you progress past simple mixing into more complex transitions that will benefit your future sets massively. Especially if you ever plan on mixing outside of house music.

The current stream of music production, and how rapid it occurs, plays a role in the feeling that you need your own productions; and even the experience of feeling like you’ve listened to all the music there is to hear. The last decade of music has resulted in a worlds worth of music but it has secluded out of the music of the past. I think that’s what was being said about the deepest foundations of being a DJ: you have worlds worth of music at your hands, you need to find the originality within it for each group you find.

I don't think it's cheating to be able to make a gig happen with one phone call. I walked into my first residency on no performance experience and smashed out a 5hr video DJ set to 200 people on a Sunday in a rum bar. People just figured I could do it, based on experience and reputation. Background in making your own tracks, videos and being able to do anything you set your mind to, means people have faith in you.

Cody I’ve been personally loving your recent focus on music and DJing. I resonate a lot with what you said 3:32 as I recently dropped out of uni to pursue a music career. I’ve been producing for 7 years now and DJing for 3. Something really important I’m starting to understand (from peers and industry musicians) is that it really all boils down to the music. That being for production or mixing, try and make the best quality of work you can, for yourself. Never believe it’s a competition, you’re doing it for the love of it being the best it can be. And we are lucky enough to share that enjoyment with other people. Fortunately for our generation it’s never been so easy to network with people, and artists for the most part are mindful and aware of other talent. I guess this speaks volumes to me personally as it’s a huge part of my life atm that I’m figuring out. Rick Rubin talks a lot about some important aspects of a music career that artists can often overlook. I’d definitely recommend giving any of his podcast interviews a watch. I’ve never felt so empowered and free to pursue a music career as a 22 year old. and I really hope that message resonates with other young aspiring artists :)
