Everyone talks about buying "pro" computers like they know what they're talking about. Let's talk about ACTUAL pro computers.

I got 3 HP Z4 machine at work. They came with instruments they control (mass specterometers) the mass specs are ~500.000usd a pop and include the PC. PC specs are really not even a consideration when buying the mass specs. . If the machine/PC isn't working the company that is delivering the instruments have to be onsite within a few hours. We have the mass specs for 8 years and they they are retired and replaced. We actually had one HP Z4 replaced after 6 years on one of the machines, it was replaced by a generation newer xeon, but still a fairly old system. (Came new in box, when they istalled it tho). My guess is that these companies buy extras from time to time and just swap when needed. Our company has around 12000 employees, and a big IT-department, but they aren't handling any computer hooked up to an instrument, but only our client pcs.

Garrett, I wanted to let you know that I think you did a great job here explaining and demonstrating the differences between prosumer and professional hardware. I was getting frustrated with that other person who was here claiming that Intel and Asus and Apple just "slap a Pro name on the hardware so they can mark the price way up," as you made it very clear in this video that that isn't generally what's happening. Thank you for helping us understand and sorry for the frustrating comments you got.

I appreciate it! I always hope the comment section starts conversation, but I know some people just want to be right. I’m still glad you found the video informative. No need to apologize for someone else’s bad take comments. 😁

I think you miss represent LTT. They often talk about the value of ECC memory for professional workloads and the cost of downtime as one of good things with the all done swap out swap in apple products.

I wasn't trying to misrepresent them. I was trying to point out that they often focus more on content that emphasizes price to performance in the consumer space, which is totally fine. However, that causes that mentality to be the only thing the average consumer looks at in general. So they end up trying to apply that logic to the pro space. I probably could have phrased it better in the video.

If an employee's workflow can be made just a little bit faster/more streamlined because of a purchase of professional-grade hardware, it very much makes sense to buy it. For instance, a $10k piece of hardware may be insane for prosumer/consumer purchase... but for enterprise, for an employee earning $100k/year, as long as it improves their productivity by as little as 4%, it is entirely justified. That's not even to mention shit around health and safety - for instance, a better grip on a RED camera being stupidly expensive, but generally less fatiguing, reducing down-time and very easily making itself worth buying.

That is exactly what I was thinking. There's certainly an argument for Xen and Thread Ripper systems such as large PCIE bandwidth and very high RAM capacity, but ECC support is definitely available at lower tiers prosumer tiers.

I was definitely ignorant on the difference between Prosumer and actual Pro hardware until I started working with clients who did major production work. Like you outlined in the video, there are lots of special requirements that add mucho $$$ to a workstation that need to be 100% reliable.

But isn't it that where Apple gets expensive is when you want to go above the base configuration? Adding RAM and SSD is a lot more expensive on Apple products. The most expensive part is if you realize that you need more RAM only later, let us say one year after the initial purchase. Your cost at that moment skyrockets. If you went for Apple a year ago, now you have to buy a whole new computer. You have to pay for the whole thing. In the case of a PC, you just need to buy some more RAM which comparably has negligible cost. One can argue that being upgradable is what professional hardware is about. Apple lacks this pro feature. Or, am I wrong?

It depends on the environment. Most professional studio or office environments don’t upgrade. They buy the spec they need in bulk on day one, configured them for what they need when they order them, and then deploy them. After that, they don’t touch them or upgrade them until they break or it comes time to replace them. That’s it. In the places I worked, we upgraded the ram a grand tidal of zero times. We bought and deployed one spec for the whole department and let them cook for years. Then swapped them out.

I used to. I worked as an IT support agent at a college full time. Literally the same kind of professional IT work I was referring to in the video. We would order a ton of one spec of computer, deploy them, and replace them if one broke and NEVER opened them. 🤷‍♂️

i will most likely never by a mac i do not like them at all but i would never "look down on" some one for using one. people need to learn that pc and windows are the way it is thanks to mac if we get every one to stop using mac then windows/pc will not have much reason to improve big companies do not care what you think about them as long as you pay them so if there is no other computer out there that we can use then we have to use pc giving them all the power ofc this dont mean you should not bring up what mac is doing wrong ofc you should that way it may get fixed and if mac is doing good that will force pc/windows to try to improve as well

I thought the m2 only has 24 threads, comparing that to a xeon with 48 threads. This absolutely does not take away from the point of the video.
@GarrettCrespo
@GarrettCrespo 2 ай бұрын
True. This also isn't accounting for the dedicated encoders and other hardware baked into the M2 SoC. It isn't a complete one to one, but I tried to get it close. Also, 48 threads doesn't mean 48 cores. Hyperthreading only improves the parallel process scheduling programs that are optimized for it. I've used 12+ core systems that hardly use the hyper threading because the cores. Again, it all comes down to the work load.
@GarrettCrespo
@GarrettCrespo 2 ай бұрын
Also, one last note. Most benchmarks show the Intel Xeon w7-2495X (24 core/48 thread) from the HP and Dell I chose performed almost identical to the M2 Ultra (24 core) in the Mac Pro

Your resident MicroCenter (cashier only) employee here. Yes the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX is indeed a consumer gaming grade oriented GPU. I sell them quite often (not necessarily every day, as they're the equivalent to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090, and they're both like $2k USD a piece). Can either handle professional/mission critical tasks? I'd say sure, but there'd be a limit to what performance they can dish out and handle for how long, as remember, they're meant for gaming at 4k/120Hz and beyond at the highest settings a modern AAA game can offer. I'm not to any extent a hardware expert like LTT or GN, but I grew up around all this tech, and I've learned some stuff about it as it came out and as I got into custom PC building starting in 2009. I have a lot yet to learn, but in terms of the 4090 vs the 7900 XTX, yeah they're prosumer and not really professional, but as I said they CAN do pro work but it's not their purpose IMHO. To close this comment out I'd like to get a message out to all the Mac vs PC crowd out there: USE WHAT YOU USE TO GET THE JOB DONE! There is no need to argue over the fact that Macs/macOS can't really game.. GET A PC FOR THAT! If you're not a PC gamer but more of a content creator like Garrett then get/build whatever Mac or PC you can afford and go from there. There really is no need to argue about this stuff. I know I'm preaching to the choir somewhat here, but Mac vs PC even today when the gap is closing more and more with more games slowly coming to macOS is really annoying. Use. What. You. Use. To. Get. The. Job/Task. Done. Point blank. Anyway, with my little mini rant there aside... Great video, Garrett! Keep em coming!

4090 actually has the same specifications as the quadro cards. You can enable the special mode through the control panel which corrects errors in real time at the cost of slightly reduced pefromance overall.

Minor nitpick, but the 7900 XTX is more a competitor for the RTX 4080, in terms of both price and gaming performance. The 4090 is in a class of its own; AMD doesn't offer a GPU that goes head-to-head with it. We'll see in Q3/Q4 of this year if AMD's next round of GPUs tries to compete at the top enthusiast levels, but my guess is probably not; I think they're ceding that small portion of the market to Nvidia. Any SI, whether it's Apple, HP, Dell, or a smaller, boutique builder like Maingear or OriginPC, is going to be signifcantly more expensive than just building the system yourself. Any differences in price are going to be relatively minor, since the labor, shipping and warranty costs will be pretty similar for any SI. You're paying a hefty premium for convenience and peace of mind, that's all. So realistically, this video could have been 30 seconds long. "Professional grade equipment is expensive because it must be significantly more failure-proof than consumer grade. Building redundancies and fault-correction into the hardware comes at either a cost of capability or an increased price. The end."

Fair and balanced. And addresses one of my complaints about the "repair-able" folks... if repair is your business, you're gonna slant your "reviews" towards how user-repairable a product is. I'm not a pro user (I'm a software engineer), but I don't expect to open my Mac and fix it. It's an appliance. So I buy as much memory / ssd as I can afford, and replace it if I need an upgrade. And, by the way, resell my old unit at a better price than a comparable "windows" PC because Apple products retain their value. In essence, creating my own "leasing" program. Thanks again, and I continue to subscribe!
