I love how the boys are not content to just rest on their laurels with their fame, and reach, touring etc. they are continuously pushing themselves with harder and harder (and more terrifying,) musical challenges. They really, really put themselves out there with this one, it’s probably one of the most nerve wracking things they’ve ever done: going after Hilary, being recorded for posterity on KZfaq, with Simone Young and a stage full of some of the best orchestral musicians in the world. Bravo!

Yes! So true! They are truly role models! Can totally feel their nervousness in their body languages before and after playing. Not only it's nerve wrecking for them to do, they share the moment with us too. I know they need the videos for their channels or their income, but it's not easy to embrace one's vulnerability.

@@elissahunt i don’t think so. They would have prepared a long time to play these excerpts. The music was there just because they hadn’t memorised it. Can’t sight read this stuff - apart from the technical difficulties, there’s a lot of organising in terms of fingering snd bowing to do.
@elissahunt

@@katharineshade9550 Maybe not pure sight reading, but they didn't know which excerpts each would play, and the both looked genuinely surprised by each one. Also, after the first one, Brett says in surprise, "You know the concerto!" And Eddy says, "Just the beginning." So, no, I don't believe they prepared it.

@@katharineshade9550 no I don’t think they have prepared it, otherwise I’m almost positive it would turn out MUCH better than the levels they played here. The fact that so many people have used the phrase “proud of them” in the comments shows how connected their audience is to them, which is because of the way they have allowed themselves to be open snd honest and vulnerable as they take us on their musical journey.

You guys did so well! But this is the video that finally makes me understand why she’s so internationally regarded. The theater sings with the reverberations of her sound. The complete control she has when changing dynamics it’s like she’s just moving a perfectly smooth slider it’s so even. And her precision, I hear each and every note exactly how it should be. And there’s not stray element of discordance in her play that catches your ear. Also on a separate note, I love that whoever won scissors paper rock always got the harder part.

@@altoclef6688 I don’t know how it is with adults but in school there are some people who really think very highly of themselves cause they’re good musicians. Like, our concertmaster in school orchestra is really down to earth, although he’s like really good (he won competitions and stuff) and in orchestra he’s really supportive and nice (like if he notices someone’s having trouble with a phrase he shows them better fingerings or stuff like that), but there are also some people who are actually very arrogant and think they’re better than everyone else, and who also show that very clearly, always showing off with their terribly difficult pieces, publicly exposing people if they played a wrong note and always acting like they only play in orchestra cause they think we wouldn’t have a chance without them… and that person isn’t playing better than our concertmaster but they definitely think they are (Sorry for the essay I just had to get it off my chest cause this person was the cause of many anger- and self doubt attacks over the last two months)

@@kxra0624 Don't mind those mean people. Without kindness, even if they have mad skills, they won't get far. Their music won't reach people's heart. I also believe that arrogance will limit one's capability to learn and improve. Whenever that person spends time attacking you instead of focusing on his own music, thinks of Brett and Eddy's "have you practiced?", and hope their voice will make you feel better. :)

This makes my heart so happy for so many reasons. Not only do we get to see Hilary KILLING IT, but we get to see the Brett and Eddy essentially sight read some of the hardest stuff with an orchestra. It not only shows off their skill because they hold their own for the most part! It also shows the vast distance between a professional like Hilary and musicians who aren’t slacking but aren’t there yet. I dunno. I just really loved it. Thought everyone did great and was just happy they got to play around in such a big setting. Way to go!

And they totally nailed the difficult ones (2nd movement fig. 33 for Brett and 3rd movement fig. 55 for Eddy) while sightreading them. Listen to some other violinists too. Hilary Hahn isn't my favourite Prokofiev player, her technique is amazing but I find her interpretation a little uninspired. @@altoclef6688 I find Hilary Hahn's tone so perfect for this concerto, a lot of recordings I've listened to feel too airy and light. The opening of her first movement is so delicate but still heavy in a super comfortable way. Same in the other movements, where it feels more on the string than it could be, which I really like. She's the only soloist I've found that actually does the sul pont all the way through the moment OP mentioned, which I absolutely adore the sound of. For me, other recordings play it too lightly, too virtuosic and not grounded enough. but hey, that's just me !

Imagine going after Hilary Hahn in a concerto that is one of her specialities, sight reading the entire thing. Just for reference, Kavakos, who is very similar to Hilary in his playing (clear, academic, and precise), looks like an amateur next to her performance, that is how good she is at this piece. That taffy pull effect she does in the second movement sul ponticello part is basically unparalleled. Going after her when she's performing something she's not as amazing at is tough enough. I imagine it would feel like going after Heifetz's Sibelius or Oistrakh's Tchaikovsky. Huge props to these two for their sheer pluck.

@DannyBoy No disrespect to Kavakos, man, heaven knows I am in no position to pass judgment on his violin playing. It's just that Hilary is so good at this particular piece, I just can't imagine enjoying anything else. That's not to say Kavakos doesn't have his own specialties, that are best enjoyed with him and only him playing. only even mentioned him because his is second best (IMO of course). Otherwise, he is the personification of clean, virtuosic playing. My teacher always says that to feel a piece you can listen to any great violinist, but only Kavakos can make you understand a piece.

Performing a noble work like this is telling a story only with music and movement. This is in fact DANCE. She dances and the violin and every movement of every part of her body is just as vitally important as every note, dynamic, articulation, tone, et al. She's the best. She. Is. The. Best. Quite different to concerts I usually see. I wonder if that’s Rays usual demographic, and what he thinks of it? Great to see young people being lured into appreciating classical music, they will be the ticket buyers of the future! I’m sure Ray appreciates them, but I wonder if he wants validation from adult more discerning audience. And I wonder if his young audience is also because of the Twoset effect? But then again Ray has always reached out to engage young people.
