I have said for a long time that if I had to describe '80's music with one song, I would play "I'll Melt With You". I'm one of the lucky ones whose entire high school and college years were in the '80's decade. I experienced it all at the perfect age. This is the song that still stops me in my tracks every time I hear it. It brings so many memories back... Thank you for this video today. Made my day.

This is one of the songs that defined my adolescent years back in the 80's when I was 14. This song was so huge here in the Philippines. I was so happy when I found an original used Sire maxi-single vinyl in a thrift shop four years later in a box of old records. Bought it for just a dollar in our local currency and became one of my most cherished record in my collection 'til this day and it never fails to brings me back to my teenage years whenever I listen to it. It’s fascinating to discover how much the UK, Australia, and the US, had in common during this era which I remember well. The vast majority of your presentations cover material which is very familiar to me, and it resonates strongly, but this track doesn’t seem to be one that made it to Australia. Most British hits of that time were also successful in Australia, and certainly the vast majority of songs that were big in both the UK _and_ the US found at least some success in Australia too. Weird, yet intriguing. Thank you for this ongoing education. P.S. Unfortunately, due to the differences in time zones, this video was uploaded around midnight in Australia. This means that our delayed responses are unlikely to catch the Professor’s eye.

My husband and I dated in the early 80s. We broke up and led separate lives but reunited in 1999. I Melt With You is our song. On Jan. 6, 2001 we were married. A group of our friends went out on New Year's Eve to have a pre wedding party. When midnight came the first song of course was New Year's Day. The second song was I Melt With You. No one requested it. It was just fate. After more than 21 years, we would still melt with each other.

I’m the same age as these guys and lived where most of the space/missle guidance stuff was made and I never once worried about nuclear war like these guys. Not once. Even with all the dads working on that kind of stuff. Wonder what the news in Britain was like.

I, too, never seriously worried as I somehow had faith in cooler heads prevailing. Not all political leaders were as unaffected as some thought.

This song is one of the best things ever to come out of the 80s. In fact, I ended up loving it even more when it was used in an episode of Stranger Things (the pool party scene at Steve’s house in “The Weirdo On Maple Street”). I never knew it was a song about nuclear war until a few months ago, actually! Makes it even more fascinating to listen to. Another 80s classic about nuclear war that you should cover is “1999” by Prince, in which he says that we better party like it’s 1999 because we might never see 2000 if a nuclear event happens! And while you’re at it, I would love to see you do a feature on Kate Bush. She’s an amazing singer and so many of her songs are underrated. I’m mentioning this because her catchy song “Running Up That Hill” was recently used in Stranger Things as well!

Kate Bush’s song “Breathing” was about a baby in the womb of a mother who was breathing nicotine and nuclear fallout. So, another cheerful and upbeat tune, lol !

One of my favourite songs of all time, along with Dancing with tears in my eyes and Red Skies. Funny you have all three in one video. I can not count how many times I have listened to this song. I do think the humming is better than what whistling would have sounded like.

Say what... Only #78? That's crazy! It was really popular, and their song "Ink and Paper" got a fair amount of airplay here in SoCal as well.... I'd love to see you curate the 1986 bottled lightning hit "One Simple Thing" by Stabilizers... It never really got its due

I was a big fan of Valley Girl which intro’d me to this and I’m sure another song or 2. I liked it so much I recall hearing it in a mall & being able to name the song, group, album & movie to friends…even though I couldn’t afford the tape. This really should be a staple of romantic shows.

Wow. I had no idea this was a Cold War song. Now that makes sense. New Wave Cold War songs were scary but comforting at the same time. It indeed felt better to dance the fear away. "Two Tribes" mix always gave me the chills with it's narration of a nuclear war protocol. "If your grandmother or any other member of your family should die whilst in the shelter, put them outside, but remember to tag them first for identification purposes".

Just saying... love your style, Professor! Almost always a pleasure 🙏 🙃 . "I melt with you" timeless classic. I would go to a local club in Missouri that wanted to lightly experiment with music outside of the mainstream: cheap beer and new wave music video night... For me it was just the music, I was unaware of the "deeper" theme to this song. I would dive deeper with punk. The music itself typically gets my attention first. I was a deejay. I would focus on rhythm and beat with the station records. I never played this song. I felt it was getting enough airplay. I liked it but it just wasn't a go to. Thanks for highlighting.

This seems like such a sweet love song, it was on the soundtrack to an 80's rom com, "Valley Girl", and it instantly makes you feel good. So imagine my surprise when it transpires that it's about a nuclear war, similar to "99 Red Balloons!"

You mentioned other bottled lightning songs we would like to hear and I would put in a vote for Dwight Twilley "Girls". I have the cassette but for some reason it was never put out on cd. It was just a fun song that we played over and over during football season (probably because of the video) one year in high school. Coach would have killed us if we played it in the locker room because that was for serious contemplation of practice or the game only, but we sure blasted it in the parking lot.

A great song that crosses personal genre bias of people. Anytime it’s played, everyone seems to remember and like it. I wonder if they took any inspiration from The Vapors Album “New Clear Days”, and the song “60 Second Interval”. The aforementioned song delved deeply into the mindset of people during a nuclear strike where bombs were inbound every 60 seconds. A very intense song.
