Description When Legendary singer guitarist Lindsey Buckingham wrote the bitter cut throat rocker Go You Own Way calling out his ex girlfriend Stevie Nicks, accusing her of sleeping around it was caustic and blatant. She had to sing it with him every single night! Fleetwood Mac had the biggest rock and roll Soap Opera ever documented. and it was all in the music we heard on the 30 million selling album Rumours. Produced by Ken Caillat Rumors had multiple dramas going on at the same time … from Mick Fleetwood to John and Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. Stevie would have her own take on the album with Dreams which had the scathing line Players only love you when they’re playing. With special guests Kenny Loggins and Neal Schon of Journey, we break down this 70s rock classic and hear the true story.

This legendary singer guitarist wrote a bitter cut throat rocker calling out his ex girlfriend, accusing her of sleeping around on him when they were together and the thing is she had to sing it alongside him as they were in the same band. She would have her own say in another hit from one of the most ruthless and honest albums ever. It’s everyone’s favorite rock and roll soap opera the battle between the exes and those who were left to pick up the pieces next on Professor of rock

It’s time for another edition of #1 in our hearts where we discuss a classic song that should’ve been number one on the billboard charts but didn’t make it there, and many shocked as most people assumed a lot of these great songs were’ #1…
So I”m gonna start this episode with a question: “What do you do when your heart’s in pain?” A desperate question Frank Sinatra entreated in a heart wrenching interpretation of Arnold Sundgaard and Alec Wilder’s beautifully melancholy composition “Where Do You Go."
For Lindsey Buckingham, who was struggling with the agony of breaking up with Stevie Nicks, he transported his being into writing a song called “Go Your Own Way.” A song that many of have sung many times, but when you really start thinking about he meaning of the words it takes on a whole new set of feelings…It is well known that Lindsey & Stevie were lovers, as well as bandmates while they were both members of the supergroup Fleetwood Mac.
But, by the time Fleetwood Mac began to record their 11th studio album Rumours, Stevie & Lindsey were in the middle of a complicated breakup. In fact, the entire band was facing the trauma of a crumbling relationship. Besides what was happening with Stevie & Lindsey, the marriage between Christine & Jon McVie was dissolving, and founder Mick Fleetwood’s marriage with his 2nd wife (Jenny Boyd) was ending.
Fleetwood Mac was coming off their hugely successful self-titled LP in ’75, and their record label had grand expectations for the follow-up record. The strain of their eroding personal relationships, combined with label pressure, made it a stressful environment for artistic expression. The five members of Fleetwood Mac really had to suck it up, rely on their professionalism, and fight through the adversity to make a superior album.

Fleetwood Mac wasn't a band that resembled a soap opera. They were a soap opera that resembled a band. How they survived all through that is a minor miracle. Want to see how much Buckingham and Nick's still loathed each other? 10 years later, on the song Big Love, they had to shoot their video scenes separately. 10 years later!!!!!! What hurts is, despite all their denials, it was open knowledge they were cheating on each other. Thanks for this story Professor. Sometimes the worst circumstances produce the best results.

The lyrics of Silver Springs are actually scathing. Dreams is trippy and pretty and more vague. Silver Springs is really the full blown response to Go Your Own Way. Length be dammed, my own theory is lyrics like “I’ll follow you down till the sound of my voice will haunt you. You’ll NEVER get away from the sound of the woman that loved you” is what got this spectacular song booted off Rumours.

Lindsey is absolutely underrated, not just as a guitarist, but as a producer & arranger as well. There's a reason none of their albums had any US pop chart success prior to his joining the band. His in-studio gifts certainly rival his talents as a guitarist and vocalist and he put just as much effort into streamlining the material of the other members as he did his own. And don't sleep on his solo work ... just because you don't hear those songs on the radio doesn't make them any less amazing.

Love/hate is a perfect description for me too. But I did grow up with them (born in '63). Now I know why...Mac's drum beat was always off-putting to me. And now I know it's specifically due to his unusual style due to dyslexia...combined with Lindsay's unusual timing too. It doesn't put us in the Alpha state like typical music does.

Rumours. One of the top albums of all time. This album sent them into the Stratosphere. Yet it was an album full of angst and torment of dying relationships. How they were able to stem the tide and make great music has always blown my mind. One of the reasons for the huge success of this album is there is not a bad song on the album. No throw-away ditty. I think there were 7 singles released from this album. The musicianship is otherworldly too. One of the best rhythm sections of all-time. Fleetwood and McVie. Buckingham's mastery of several styles of music and his use of fingerpicking in a rock band. Few can make it work. Lindsey and Roger McGuinn. Then you have Christie McVie I don't think she has ever penned a bad song. The blended voices of Christie, Stevie and Lindsey as slick as a buttered piece of toast.

You did great on this one, Professor. I'm always impressed with your musical knowledge across the board. This song is complicated both technically and emotionally, and you nailed it on both fronts. I remember getting chided for lauding Buckingham over the guitarists du jour in the '80s and '90s. Underrated is what he is, but he's widely known as such. It's a distinction few in the business can truly claim, but it is undeniably his.

This is one of the greatest albums ever made. I remember hearing it for the first time when it came out. My best friend’s brother was quite a bit older than him. My friend was what people called an anniversary baby, lol. His brother was so cool, or so we thought at the time, and he would let us listen to his music whenever we wanted too. He even taught us how to use his record player properly so as to not harm the record. Yeah he was cool, though I look back now and realized that he drank way to much and never had a job, but as a kid he was pretty cool. Lol Irregardless it’s one of the best albums ever made. I still cherish it still and when I listen to it I play the whole album every time. It must be in my top twenty favourite albums of all time. One of the most tragic things about this song is that Nicks had to sing backup for it. It must have been truly hurtful each time. Might be why I think Lindsay’s a major prick. I was horrified when, after one of your videos, he left Nicks stranded in a strange city. This was before interact and cell phones. It’s unforgivable in my mind.

Thank you, Adam for such a marvelous treatise on the genesis of this song. I have listened to and enjoyed FM since the mid 70's when John and Christine joined the band and before Bob Welch departed, leaving the vacuum for Lindsey and Stevie to fill. All those years, despite knowing the song was about a woman that was loved but was unfaithful, I never knew Lindsey wrote it about Stevie. Maybe it was simply my naiveté and adoration for Stevie that blinded me to that fact, or just being overwhelmed by the joy of their music, I may never know. Excellent story telling by you and I am always pleased to listen to you weave the tale.

Man I have to say something and give credit where it is due. When I watch your videos it takes me back waaay back to a better time. I’m 53, so when you start off your video with memories of doodling the Van Halen logo on your trapper note book, Saturday morning cartoons, reading the cereal boxes as you ate cereal, the way you have set up your videos, the intro song all of it, just gives me the wonderful feeling of being back in the 70s when life wasn’t so complicated. When life was about all things good it seemed. You have been able to embody and capture this unique time capsule, at least for me. I can’t thank you enough, plus your videos are fantastic, informative, fun and you ask all the right questions. When I’m feeling down, and as you get older sometimes that happens, I will put on one of your videos and it transports me back in time. Just like today. It helps change my mind set for just a while, takes me back and gives me some hope and realization that I was fortunate enough to live in an incredible time period. I just wanted to thank you and hope that God keeps blessing you to provide the work you do to make old farts like me be able to think back and smile, laugh and ponder about the good ol days.

I was thinking on this yesterday when you highlighted Tracy Chapman's Fast Car. There is music that is purely a product of its time, which is reflected in the tones and techniques expressed in the era. Then there are those that are timeless anthems - those that transcend time and become an expression of the ages. Those two songs fit comfortably in there. You can listen to them in any decade and it still sounds fresh and relevant. Such good music.

I trained horses and did private horseback tours on an estate in Hawaii, and when I was a child my mom was obsessed with fleetwood Mack, I often think of their music as a very big part of “the soundtrack of my childhood”. After my mom passed away and I moved back home to Hawaii, I ended up taking Lindsey Buckingham and his family out on a private estate tour. They are a LOVELY family btw. I have met a lot of celebrities and high profile people in the course of my work in entertainment, and I generally don’t get star struck because they are all just people… but when I had him on my tour with his family, I couldn’t get the memories of my mom singing along to their music out of my head. After I cried for the better part of an hour and no one quite understood why… but my mom would just be beside herself to know the man who wrote the music that played through out my childhood and her hero hung out with me on horses for several hours, and unfortunately with her being passed away I couldn’t tell her about it, to experience her having a major fan girl reaction that would have happened if she was alive. Thats my memory of the band.

One of my favourite Fleetwood Mac songs and it's kinda amazing that they're still around. So many bands have imploded for much less. Whatever the case the drama certainly created some fantastic, classic songs. Hope you cover Holiday Road one day, a great feel good driving song.

@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I can't hear the Pointer Sisters' I'm So Excited without seeing Christie Brinkley in a sports car.

@@kevint1719 No kidding! I believe the Christie Brinkley sports car scenes were soundtracked by just June Pointer singing Little Boy Sweet.

Holiday Road is the greatest ear worm ever!! Also, Dancin' Across the USA is a forgotten gem of LB's solo work as well.

I caught the pain and the big FU the first time I listened to it. Such passion is only found when love is still present. After all, the opposite of love isn't hate, the opposite of love is indifference.

I remember my dad bringing this album home and dropping it on the stereo. While he opened a beer I sat there and listen to it with him and was completely blown away. I think I was either 9 or 10. There’s several other albums I can remember him bringing home also like Bob Seger‘s against the wind and Willie Nelson red headed Stranger but Rumors is always the first one I think about. Another good video appreciate what you do! 🤘🏻🇺🇸

The album Rumors is one of the greatest albums of all time. And Lensy is a extraordinary guitarist that never got his due. This is a group that was forged by a trial of fire. Never saw Fleetwood Mac in concert, but I did see Stevie I Nick's in concert on the night I broke up with the girl I was seeing at the time. Bitter sweet memories.
