Danny you put some other allotmenters to shame, I watch quite a few videos from other UK plotholders and I've never seen anyone work so hard as you, well done 👏👏

When you pick lettuce put it in cold water quickly. We call it soaking the heat off. Let it sit in it for 10 minutes or so then rinse, spin, and put it in a bag with some paper towel or a small kitchen towel, into the fridge. That 10 minutes soak makes it super crunchy and the towel makes it keep for a month or even more

Danny, the different size garlics DO MAKE SENCE. When selecting the garlic cloves to plant choose the largest cloves out of the bulb. (use the small ones for cooking). The larger cloves make the larger bulb. Next year do it again and eventually your garlic bulb will be very large. Ray Delbury Sussex County NJ USA

I’d cut the brambles down. If there are fruit bushes underneath the light might even encourage a crop. And at least you’ll know what’s going on in there. Greenhouse look so cute. You could fill it with flowers to make an awesome display.

Wow! Becoming a glazier! Good job on the greenhouse. If you want crisp lettuce, just pop it into a sink of icy water for 20-30 minutes and it should crisp right up. It also helps to harvest it first thing in the morning. I read a study from the U of Oregon today that used a soil drench of 1 part water/2 parts strongly brewed coffee and 100% of the slugs left the zone. They also tested a foliar spray of 9 parts water/1 part brewed coffee with success. I have not tried either method but they might be worth an experiment.

Chop the brambles back now, before hedgehog hibernation time, get rid of the bindweed in there, and let a couple of canes start growing in a controlled way for next year.

The brassicas look so beautiful! Fantastic to have a greenhouse, the extra space is always needed. You did a great job putting the glass in. The glass will add extra weight to it which is good against the wind. You are so good at always thinking of saving water everywhere, I need to do more of it too. Wow! You already have courgettes! You have been clever with the guttering on the greenhouse! Great harvest! Everything is looking brilliant! So exciting! 😘💕🌸

I would use a polystyrene Broccoli box with a freezer block in it to take home veggies. Here in Australia that’s a foam box with a lid and no drainage holes used by growers to transport broccoli to retailers. I get them free from markets or greengrocers.

Hi Danny. Wow, it was a productive day. I love your new (old) wriggly tin pot. It really goes well there. You feel good getting things planted. I'm growing Cobra this year too. I'd cut all those brambles out and start again. It will give you more room to sort that old shed out. I would utilise your greenhouse while you still can. Get a harvest of the bramble but remove before autumn as they are one of hedgehogs favourite houses so you wouldn't want to disturb anyone hibernating ❤

Try Crest toothpaste on the discolored greenhouse to clean. You squirt a glob and take a rag and rub round to put it back to clear. It works on car headlights as well. Love your garden, getting so pretty. ❤

Everything is looking fantastic. You're about 3 weeks ahead of me on the harvests. My garlic won't come out until after July 1. The new plot is looking great. That greenhouse will come in handy, for sure, but I don't think you'll be able to resist planting something in there, lol.

Even though my garden is in my back yard some times I just don't want to stop and prep the lettuce I just harvested. Put a few inches of water in the bottom of a deep bucket and put the lettuce in the water in the shade. Then when I go inside, it's still firm and crispy to prep for the fridge. Wow you new plot is looking good. I'd live with the brambles for the season and reap the harvest. If they taste nice, then trim them back when they go dormant. I personally love blackberries and would probably figure out how to keep them. Instant fruit harvest. BTW I love BB, lemon and ginger jam.

You asked what to do with the blackberry patch, if it were me, I would cut it all back, but that's just my opinion, it would make things easier for clearing, and give you a great start for next season. Cold weather? Just earlier today it dumped a lot of hail stones, fortunately small ones, but it certainly was noisy. I had just put the latest tomato starts out, and used an umbrella to grab the pot to lift it and put under the eaves. It's sunny now. 🤷 Goofy weather.

Hi Danny, nice to start getting harvest from the plots. Love going round vintage places looking for old gardening tools. I'd take the brambles down but do it in stages say only half meter at a time so what's living under there has time to move on.

Nematodes are amazing! I have watered in 2 lots so far, at 3 weeks apart, and I will do one more in a week’s time.

Carrots like a free flowing moist soil, not over compacted, too germinate. Cut the bambles down, best to slowly dig them out, buy a thornless blackberry, would give you one. But New Zealand to far and quarantine be a bit difficult😅

I used to keep a stash of paper bags on the plot for harvesting - I quickly realised that plastic bags are more helpful to stop everything dehydrating after picking. I keep all the bags my supermarket items were wrapped in - bread/ cabbage etc - give them a quick wash and they’re good to be used again and again - keep a stash up the plot for harvesting your salads/ rhubarb/ greens etc. Also chuck the salad leaves in some cold water both when you get home but also to perk it back up again just before you eat it. ❤

I’m with Tony on take a cooler to take lettuce home. We had loads of rain a couple weeks ago and cool weather also. The peppers and a few others were taking on a lime green color. I gave them all a bit of a nitrogen boost and now we will head into at least 3 super hot days of 90+F and humidity. Rain early morning and appears most of the week. So we’ve been racing to get the heavy jobs off our list. Things like mulch and covering pathways to protect from heat. And getting the rest of plants and seeds in. Kudos to you on greenhouse job!

I feel for you in your shorts and t-shirt Danny, I've been virtually wearing winter gear at times... layering is definitely the way to go! Plot looks amazing, so great to get harvesting. Love the new planter too. I sowed very basic single dahlia (Mr Fothergill's Dahlia Mignon mixed) 4 years ago, I leave them in the ground and they're massive now and produce so many flowers and the bees love them.

Chop that messy bushy block on its head it will just get bigger. Surely you’re not eating all those potatoes in one meal Danny. Get a net wash bag affray washing the lettuce in cold water put it in the bag zip up and hold it like a windmill swing it high in air to get water out. I got that from you tuber channel andy160676. Brilliant dries better than those lettuce machines. then if storing put it in like typer wear container on top of paper towel keeps much better in fridge. Very cold and wet still very frustrating garden wise.

Could you leave some brambles. Invaluable for bumble, honey bees etc and home to hedgehogs.

Put your salad in a bag with a little cold water and pop it in the fridge for a bit, when you get home, and Bob's your uncle. Id wait for the blackberry harvest and freeze those for eating later before you cut back that area. Its not long for the blackberry harvest now. And then you have that time to get another poject done, too. P.s. im living the galvanized bowl. ❤

Danny, did you have any problems being accepted for rehousing hedgehogs? Because our local Hedgehog rescue centre doesn't live rehousing hedgehogs on allotments where weed killers may be used.
