Most summers Tudor and Stuart monarchs took their court on an extended progress round the home counties staying at their own palaces and the houses of their courtiers. The cost and impact of hundreds of people, their horses and servants, was considerable; for the aristocratic hosts a royal visit was a momentous event.
This lecture draws on new research to reveal who they benefited, their impact on the economy, the landscape and on architectural ambition.
A lecture by Professor Simon Thurley CBE
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:

It would be so interesting to see a lecture about pest control in those times. There must have been lots of pests hitching a ride with the court moving. How did they deal with that?

Consider that the Shogunate (Toyatomi, Tokugawa) required prominent daimyo to maintain residence (wife and household virtual hostages) in Kyoto/Edo as a tactic to systemize and/or enforce control. Plus, it compelled the daimyo to spend lavishly, making the raising of private armies more difficult. Is it possible that the English monarchs traveled about for the same reasons?

It's explicitly known that Elizabeth planned her itineraries to include those whom she wanted to impoverish. She might stay one or two nights with a trusted friend but a week with a noble family whose loyalty was suspect.
