SimCity is an open-ended city-building video game series originally designed by Will Wright. The first game in the series, SimCity, was published by Maxis in 1989 and sparked the creation of several sequels and many other spin-off "Sim" titles, including 2000's The Sims, which itself became a best-selling computer game and franchise. Maxis developed the series independently until 1997, and then continued under the ownership of Electronic Arts until 2003. EA commissioned various spinoffs from other companies during the 2000s, focusing on console and mobile releases. A 2013 EA-Maxis reboot was subject to what has been described as "one of the most disastrous launches in history", which may have triggered the 2015 shutdown of Maxis Emeryville and the end of the franchise.
SimCity The Card Game was released in 1995 by Mayfair Games. Several city expansions followed, adding location and politician cards from various cities, including Chicago, Washington, New York City, and Atlanta. Several expansions were planned but never released including Hollywood, Paris, Toronto and Denver. Eleven different promo packs were also released with 10 fixed cards each. Some of these promo packs included the promos that appeared as magazine inserts. Another source noted over 150 promo cards, some released to conventions and gaming stores.

tbh, i groaned when you lifted up the cloth to reveal the card game because i like your video game videos way better, but I'm glad i stuck around through the end. You gave great analysis and critique while still keeping it light-hearted and fun to watch. I would like more videos similar this. Actually, i would LOVE if you took a look at the Oregon Trail card game sold by target a few years ago. It's quite a stinker. but yeah. good video. ive been enjoying the streams too. thank you jared, please keep making stuff. you're great

Nice to see you cover this game! Now I'm kinda eager to whop out my own copies of it, as I've never really played the game - I just enjoy having these weird IP-based card games in my CCG/TCG collection ^^ ("Mortal Kombat", "Monster Hunter TCG" and "Alien Predator" are three of my personal favorites, though I HAVE actually played two of those!)

Jared, you gotta check how 90's nightclubs looked, here in Spain we have a lot of awesome old buildings that were made as nightclubs! The one in the card looks like a medieval themed one, for "going medieval" on the drinks and the hotties?

I discovered Sim City: The Card Game at the 1995 Origins game convention and, being an 11-year-old Sim City-loving geek, spent an unreasonably large percentage of my time there playing it despite the plethora of other games present (hello? Magic?!). I also remember the game's oft-tedious mechanics. I played in the mini-tournament that Mayfair Games put on at that con, and the final game had us clustered around a gigantic table and as you can imagine, we built an absolutely enormous freakin' city, complete with the wide cards, having to count all conditional bonuses for connected roads, rail, and power lines on each play of the card, and draw decks were scattered around the periphery of this psychotic metropolis. By the end of the game we had basically all become certified public accountants, and I suspect the game developers were taking note of the scalability issues. The council members on the cards were portrayed by actual Mayfair employees, and a few were at the convention to promote the game. The Mayor in the game was the late Darwin Bromley (RIP), co-founder of Mayfair Games. The City Council Chairman "developer's uncle" was a Mayfair employee manning the booth, and somewhere (probably in a box labeled "Paul's Crap" in my parents' attic) is an actual autographed copy of that card if you can believe it. Sadly I don't think I saw cellphone guy. As you would imagine, this game never caught on, once I got home I only found one card shop in my area that carried the game, and it wasn't around for long. I got more into MTG and Star Wars instead and the allure of SimCity:TCG quickly waned. Thanks to Jared for this trip down memory lane.
