As an introduction to the LOM Channel, I present our latest project bike: a 2006 Buell XB12R Firebolt. With some assistance from my buddy Dave, we kickoff the project by investigating what caused the bike to quit on the previous owner. We are in for a surprise after what we find lurking inside the engine! Follow along with us as we bring this collector bike back to life!

I got the same bike. Mine didn't run either. I paid 700$ 2 relays later it fired rite up after sitting for 7 years in a barn. Now I have to replace fork seals and paint the rear wheel and a new set of tires

If you're going to buy something not-running, you probably want to to at least ensure that the engine is free to rotate.

Hi Mike, I recall you had a problem with Buell that involved the neutral switch wire, ? When it happened did it kinda loose all the electrics ?

I have been wanting one of these bikes, but wondered how I would be able to work on it with the giant gas tank frame in the way. This video confirmed by fear. If you wanna touch the engine, you have to completely separate it from the bike. Yikes!

Filthy Eskimo the service manual does suggest that you can do many service operations by “rotating” the engine for better access, but I found it to be much easier to just remove the frame. Thanks for checking out the video!

Hey Mike, about to tackle my new 2005 xb9sx and was wondering where in the manual it gives the steps to removing the engine while keeping it attached to the swing arm? I’d imagine they would list the same procedure for the xb models but I can’t seem to find it, only how to rotate engine and strip motorcycle for engine service. Any help is greatly appreciated as this is my first sport bike and my first time doing any real work to a bike, thanks

I saw the engine rotation procedure in the manual as well, but I wanted more access. I found a few videos on KZfaq of others removing the entire frame, and I made up my mind that I would use that technique. I used the manual to find the engine mounts and a few other attachment features, but I did not follow a specific process in the manual to remove the frame only. Trial and error my friend! I need to remove the throttle body on my bike to replace intake seals. How difficult do you remember it being? How long do you think it’ll take me to do?

We were able to get the throttle body off the first night within probably an hour or two so you shouldn’t have too much trouble! Make sure to download a copy of the service manual for reference.

Yo, is that a gold Daytona triple? I have an 07. I don't have a firebolt anymore but there is a lightning ss next to her. 🤘🏻

Nice!!! I’m a big fan of the Lightning SS. It’s a great looking Buell. The Daytona was actually my younger brother’s bike that I was holding for him at the time. I have always wanted one for myself though…🤔

I don't use KBB because they always over value everything. Doing the average as you do seems ok though. Whenever I see Buell bikes I think of Mad Max.

I'm looking at a 2005 xb12r. Is there anything I should be looking out for when it comes to these bikes? Don't know a lot about them, other than basics. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I would just be aware that many Harley shops will not want to help you with any maintenance you may have, so it's best to be prepared to get your hands dirty with these bikes. However, there is a Harley dealer in Minnesota that stocks a ton of BUELL parts, so I would recommend them for any OEM part needs! Owning a BUELL is a very rewarding experience, and I would purchase another one given the right opportunity and price! Best of luck!

Parts can be hard to find. I have an 05 xb12r and just got it running. It runs great. The other stuff is out there just requires you to look for it.

Hey what miles did the bike have when you bought it? Looks like a lot of carbon build up

It had just over 14,000 miles when I first picked it up. It was a mess, but we cleaned it up pretty good!

The Owners manual tells you to take the bike to the Dealer.. The Shop manual is 744 pages

I was wondering I have a buell firebolt xb12r. Needs work and I just moved to Florida. Haven’t had anyone who would touch it. Not sure if you take jobs or can point me to someone.

I'm going to tear my 2007' XB12R down to the trans for a shift fork. I went to MMI back in 97-98 but never touched one of these. Literally have to tear the entire bike apart to get to the transmission seems daunting cut the bike is so fast and sweet
