Finally someone else who’s done some proper research on the engine! Love the vid - same motor as mine 😊

Nice wee ST170, looks like it has most of the options! I have an early '02 car, poverty spec, that I bought nearly 2 years ago for £1400. It's just coming on 90 000 miles now and I love it. The torque really starts to build at 5000 RPM but once the IMRC changes to the short runners at 6000 RPM the engine really comes alive, not to mention it's fabulous handling. If you are planing to drive the car hard I would recommend changing the timing belt and whilst you are in there it's best to also change the water pump at the same time. Good luck with your project!

Saw a ex touring car st170 racing in northern saloons once, it was so nicely built sat raised on air jacks. Made me want to build an imperial blue one as a track car. So underrated. I heard the gearbox is ridiculously long though and doesn’t suit the engine
@ChrisTheCarBuilder Жыл бұрын
The gearbox part is very true! Who the hell needs to be able to do 70mph in 2nd?! Does love to rev out. I hear some track day users fit a 5 speed as it really helps with acceleration

New sub here! I’ve lived with the slight knock in the steering and I can’t wait to see what you find. I could only find a rear rotors in st170 size from EBC, went yellow pads as well. Haven’t fitted them yet.

Hi mate welcome! It needs a new rack mate. Bought mine from a supplier on eBay for about £250, feels great with the new rack. Yellow pads are the right way to go as it's fast road for low weight vehicles. They'll feel good! EBC direct you can buy fronts and rears, with various different disc types. I've been running dimpled/grooved ones before but OEM discs are still good

I’m not a fan of silver cars but my god they do look good in silver on standard wheels 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
@flycorvus Жыл бұрын
That's called "moondust silver". Ford makes tons of cars with that finish. My '02 Turnier Focus has is too.

the imrc sometimes can be fixed but most of the time its a no no so a new one and a oem only supply is around £300 i would not go for used/salvage as you dont know when or if they will last i have had 3 on mine they are located on the firewall some in the wheel arch and they are a pig to take apart as they are weather sealed . it looks a clean car for the miles but please put them fog light bezels back to at least silver
@ChrisTheCarBuilder Жыл бұрын
I'll give the IMRC fix a go and see what happens. If it fails I'll buy a new one. A previous owner did do a few blue accents, I love the dark blue calipers but I may paint the fogs something dark like grey

the inlet manifold runner control opens at 6000rpm on this engine, 3500rpm is the opening point for the mondeo ST200 2.5L V6

I just put pilot sport 5s on my St170, makes the car come alive and it handles like it’s on rails through the corners

Is there much difference between the fours and fives? I’m on fours atm but don’t know what differences they made on the fives

Personally I prefer 4s for bang for your buck! Both very good tyres though

Great video, did you get to the cause of the steering rack knock? I have something similar. When you initially move the steering, there is resistance followed by a knock and then it operates normally. Had it fully inspected by a family friend who owns a garage and he cannot find anything external. He suspects it could be inside the steering rack - the first "tooth" on the rack and pinion possibly worn or chipped.

Same problem with mine. It’s annoying but will wait until I’m ready to get the subframe/rack out. Keen to see the verdict with this car
@Mechanikool810 ай бұрын
must be a common issue. Easy to live with but annoying on motor ways when there's a slight bend in the road and the knock makes you almost jolt the steering@@malcolmgray.5913

The pinion wears a groove into the rack over time from being overtightened from factory. I now have a new rack and it feels brilliant. 100% that'll be your fix

A lot of these are rusty underneath, what's yours like
@ChrisTheCarBuilder Жыл бұрын
Rear end has some surface rust but no holes! I want to give the underbody a good go over as well at some point
@SoggEminentia6 ай бұрын
Can i ask you, is it really that bad with rust on snow? Some people tells me that you cant drive this car in snow becouse rust can very fast destroy it.
@ChrisTheCarBuilder3 ай бұрын
Focuses and a lot of this age fords in general have very poor rust protection on the rear of the car. The boot floor, sills and rear subframes are prone to rotting out. Regular underbody jetwashing in winter to get the salt off the car helps protect it

Can these st170 be remapped
@ChrisTheCarBuilder Жыл бұрын
Yes but not worth it really mate, they're n/a so very expensive to get good power gains from
@jeprerderwererwer567 ай бұрын
Dont use Bosch or Motorcraft spark plugs on these, it will run rough and sluggish. Especially with those crappy Motorcraft plugs! These Zetec engines runs excellent on the Beru copper Ultra spark plugs.

I agree!

Ford deliberately raised the gearing for the ST170 so it would not tread on the heels of the Focus RS in any way performance-wise. Anything more than 170bhp was never going to be allowed either. Sadly.
