318 to 349 stroker build - First Fires
Project Fast Fish - Season 1: Episode 6
Project Fast Fish is based on the restoration and modification of a Plymouth Barracuda.
This video features the first firings of our 318 to 349 stroker build. We’ve placed it on the engine stand and fired it up, but had a pesky obstacle in way.
We had a spare 318 engine that was once housed in the ‘73 Barracuda. This engine is close to the original concept for Project Fast Fish when the ‘Cuda was given to me on my 18th birthday.
A 318 with .030 over and a 3.58” stroke from the 360 crank equals 349 ci.
Our goal is to sell this stroker and use the proceeds to help build Project Fast Fish.

hmm, I built a 318 stock stroke with shaved Indy LA-X heads, Zero deck, 10.5:1 with a comp XE-268H cam and it did 292 hp and 280 pound feet torque to the rear wheels on a chassis dyno. Very streetable.

@@jonathanlawson4667 Agree..... did a recent 318 build, stock stroke, RPM manifold, magnum heads, 9.8 to 1 , 1.6 rockers yielding 512 lift at .050, Full tube headers. Produces 402 HP at 6300 at the crank. The smaller stroker they built had a bigger cam than the one I used and they are projecting less power.

Good build with a lot of good videos. Engine sounds good & should run just fine. You need to work on the specifics of the build though. Most novice builders need to know some of the oddities of the MoPar small block as well as some of the common things on V-8 engines. Rocker arm shafts can be installed backwards, show how to do it. Rods: Bearing tangs go on same side of rod (together), large chamfer goes toward the crankshaft shoulder, oil squirt hole goes up towards the camshaft, stamped number goes downward so that it can be seen from the bottom. Crankshaft end play? Oil galley plug? The one in the vertical oil passage that forces the oil to go through the filter. Usually a machine shop job but can be overlooked if the shop isn't familiar with MoPar engines (Chevy & Ford work mostly). If overlooked there can be a lot of trash left in there or they can knock it our & forget to install a new one.

had the same problem with my 360 . Should have listened to the seasoned vets originally. Ditched the high volume and replaced it with a mellings standard unit . Dont use hi volume or hi pressure pumps unless you are running extreme clearances for racing . The factory oil system works extremely well as it was intended

Thanks Charlie. We overlooked the pressure blow-off spring assembly on the pump. It was an OEM unit; but because we didn't "go over" the spring and plate assembly, we had that issue. The hi-volume Melling was a great choice. Thanks for watching.

From the Crane catalog, cam is 232/242 @ 0.050" 114° centerline, with 504"/528" lift- just to put things in perspective, because advertised duration seems to be measured in all kinds of cockamamie ways!

Did you polish the cam lifters after dialing in the timing 20 minutes at 2000 rpm, unless its a roller cam, also ditch the thermostat to fill the block with water for initial startup runup
@MicsMotorworx

Not sure about that process. We're pretty confident the right process and procedures were used. Although, there are a lot of ideas out there on what's needed. So if I remember correctly you used Silvolite 1278-030 pistons for this build. Could I ask you if you cut the top of the piston down any? I know you had to clearance the bottom for the counter weights but I can't remember if you cut any off the top to lower compression. Then could I also ask you if you remember what the compression ratio was on this build?
@MicsMotorworx
@MicsMotorworx 3 жыл бұрын
Hey StikersLG. Good question. There wasn't a need to shave the pistons. Other than the clearance for the down-stroke, there wasn't any other issue since the compression height was 1.658" compared to 1.72" of the stock 318. On paper, the folks from this forum estimated a pretty aggressive compression ratio. Keep in mind, our build used pistons with height and we went with factory style gaskets. www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/threads/349-ci-on-the-cheap.19556/

Really curious what sort of valve to piston clearances you ended up with given you are using fully flat top pistons. Apparently running a 232/242 @50 camshaft duration.
@MicsMotorworx
@MicsMotorworx 2 ай бұрын
Sure. I left the parts list in each build video. I can't recall the clearance from the top of my head. However, the pistons were key for clearance. The wrist pin bore were in a different location in the pison than the factory ones.

Hate to say it , but a 5.2 L Magnum block and heads gives you so much more for your un-leaded gas money. Me and Hughes Engines took a 5.2, stroked and bored it to 352 CID and made an RV torque monster trailer puller from it.Saved a TON of money not stoking it to 360 for the price of the forged billet crank, like 3grand! The Dakota never knew the difference in 8 or 9 CID and neither did my 18 foot RV trailer.Magnum heads, a dual plane intake and long tube headers are the street combo for today's un-leaded swill. You can SAFTELY pull 43* of advance with port fuel injection, in a "Fish get 25+ MPG and close to 400 REAL WORLD CRANK HP and more than 400 ft/lbs of rear-wheel torque with a Dana. Very hard to do with a "B" block. for the same number of Benjamins. You get roller cams with a Magnum block too. You can pick up a lunched Magnum in a salvage yard for $150 everyday of the week. Running ones for $250. Locked-up "B"'s go for 5 bills around here...when you can find them.
