Project Land Rover, Fixing a £300 Barn Find - Part 1: What's wrong with it & first fixes
No MOT and a list of issues that, whilst off putting to some, seemed like potentially inexpensive fixes with a bit of research and time. Although not driven for months, a quick test drive went well, engine, gearbox and clutch all very smooth, no nasty knocks, ticks, bangs, squeals or smoke!
So what's the mission here?
I always fancied a Land Rover and I wanted another project. The budget doesn't stretch to the more desireable Defenders and the series 1 and 2 are a bit too old school for me. I want to drive this thing in some sort of comfort so all those things considered, the Freelander was the best choice for me.
I spent a couple of months searching for a suitable candidate and eventually came across this one ... a 2001 Land Rover Freelander TD4. She's not been on the road for a couple of years and was parked up under an outbuilding of a local farm. 133,000 miles on the clock isn't so bad for the TD4 engine and after giving her the once over I decided that the price was right. Sat on my driveway all in for £300!
Goal 1 is to get her roadworthy! I've made two fairly detailed videos showing that process and this is part 1 ... a quick look around and some of the more simple fixes. I get to the bottom of some electrical gremlins, sort out the suspension, fix a broken seat, clean up the interior and fit a couple of tyres.
Roadworthy examples of this model / mileage start from around the £1000 mark here in the UK and that's pretty much bottom end. So that's my initial target ... I want to give her another chance. I want to get her back on the road in good condition, serviced, undersealed, driving as she once did and with a clean bill of health ... and I want her to be better than anything I could have bought for that amount. A success, in my eyes, will be if I can do that within the £1000 target.
There is 1 expensive item I know she'll need that might make that difficult, something that I have no choice but to spend the money on ... more about that it part two but I'm optimistic. Will that prove to be false hope?
Subscribe to the channel for notifications on part 2 ...
Servicing the engine, sorting a brake problem, treating the underside, the 'expensive part' and all the other little issues she throws my way before going for the MOT test.
Tune in next time for the full story ...

My for 375 US thats a great deal!! Over hear it would sell for 1200 or more! Love to have a land rover but the parts over here are expensive! I need some of the wheel studs from a free lander to do the stud conversion on my Spitfire.

Just started a very similar project on a near identical 2001 Freelander, except mine's the 1.8 petrol. One tip, don't use a heatgun on the plastics! it doesn't last and causes them to become brittle.

I'm glad you said that ... I didn't lol! and wondered the same thing! I'll let you know how the other method works out, 2 weeks so far and still looks great. Good luck with the project, share pics if you can! ... Have to say, really nice to car to work on, have loved every minute of it.

5:13 😉Looks like a VCU bolt maybe. A set of torqs mounted in 1/2 inch sockets is very handy for jobs like this. Means you can use your 1/2" ratchet. The brake hose drops down after the clip is removed so the hose slips through the gap instead of the metal part so no hammering required, even on your bent bracket. Before hitting a bolt with a hammer always put the nut on first leaving it flush with the end of the bolt, that way the nut protects the bolt and when you remove the nut it cleans up the threads for you . That's a handy tip for getting out a plastic screw. Well done on getting what is becoming a modern classic for a fantastic price. I wanted a 2001 (pre March) for my EV project as at that age they are tax exempt when converted. My O4 costs me the same as a diesel even though it is now all electric.

Interesting. Nice tip & 'doh' yep realised that about the brake hose dropping down later on! haha. Love to hear about the EV project some time, have stuff online about that? Not a VCU bolt btw ... answer at the end of the next vid ;)

@@alibro7512 Ali!!! Holy cow dude! What an incredible and impressive project. Just subbed to your channel and spent 20 minutes going through that epic Landyzone thread to the 'first drive' video. This is absolutely mind blowing, so impressive I just don't have the words to do it justice. Absolutely incredible job, workmanship, innovation, patience, skill ... the list is endless. What you have done here is something really very special. Massive respect! I though't i'd undertaken a nice little project but yours is on a level that is another universe. Brilliant!!! Absolutely brilliant!

I presume by the tyre wear that it’s only front wheel drive and missing the prop shaft and VCU? Did you look under it to see if it was still 4x4? Excellent job so far looking forward to the next instalment.

'Excellent' a great find imo John & in the 'right' condition to find the 'little things' requiring attention .. 😉 You seem to have made a great start on 'fixing' this one up to your satisfaction & needs. So much of the bodywork is a relatively 'easy fix' much like the interior as you have done, time & patience being the key. I do hope you had an axel stand or at least put the removed wheel under the sill (maybe you did out of shot). This 'fingers crossed' should be a great motor for you, sorting things from the start it will become 'your car' I'm thinking it already smells 'sweet' .. 😎 Thanks for sharing atvb t .. 👍

Had me worrying with the car on just the jack with you prying on the bolts. Please get some stands to be safer next time you need to work under a car.

It's all good mate. I have stands, she was only ever 1 wheel up at a time, jacked on the normal jacking points. Majority time also had a 2 ton trolley jack under the wishbone

@@TheLostWrenchGarage lol, you're gonna love the next one in a few hours, im under the car half of the time! lol ... supported though .. and cheers! I genuinelly appreciate the concern! Don't think the same thing doesn't go through my mind every second im under it! I question the integrity of the jacks, the axle stands, the ramps .. all of them ... and I'm never not relieved when the job is over even if im as near to 100% confident in the equipment as I can be.
