Ooff, cracked ring lands. I'd say this is usually from tight end gaps on the piston rings causing them to touch when it gets too hot. But the cylinders don't look all that bad. Typically this can also score the cylinders. I can still see cross hatching.

I'm going for previous owner had it badly mapped and just got too hot. He said it was mapped but offered no proof or details, so I assumed he was telling lies but guess he could've been right and it was just bad.

This is the usual failure Megane Sport 225 pistons encounter - this is caused by knock usually and/or too much boost. Usually the culprit of a engine rebuild. My advice - return the car to the stock map and/or look into water/meth injection.

Yep I think the previous owner had a very bad (undisclosed to me) map on it.

Oil control rings look ok, top ring and lands are borked.

Some of the oil control rings are definitely not OK but yeah those Ringlands 😂
