(Just a quick note to apologise for the proper 'Death-stare' with slight Serial-Killer overtones in the intro! Watching it back on a full screen it's a bit 'intense', but I'd just lost an hours footage after an SD card s**t itself, so was feeling a bit peeved - obviously this translated on screen :D).
Moving on... It's finally done! After two rebuilds, a full timing chain replacement and a mild bankruptcy, the XKR's engine is running rattle-free and not burning oil!!
Big thanks to Swallows Independent Jaguar in Rooksbridge, for sorting it out to a really high standard.
Now, I just need to sort it out cosmetically, get the exhaust tamed and stop it riding like a roller-skate on anything other than a dead flat!

Changing the air filters on a regular basis, even between services, is an inexpensive and very worthwhile exercise. Because the air intakes on XKR’s are close to the road they tend to intake a lot more dust & road grit than normal. Just changed mine, (09- 4.2) and was surprised at the amount of dust and grit in the intake boxes. Paul from Cape Town.

I agree and it doesn’t, although that’s because I’ve fitted 18’s that came with tyres, but when they get refurbished, a set of Michelin Pilot Sports is going on!

I have a 2005 XK8 4.2L with 153Kmi. When should I do the primary chains, tensioners and valve stem seals?
@MikeMacful
@MikeMacful Жыл бұрын
TBH the chains don’t have a stated change interval (IIRC) - it’s only worth doing if they start showing signs of wear - opinions differ, though. Ref Valve stem seals, again only if there’s signs they’re leaking - it’s an expensive job to do ‘just in case’.

Hii, I have watched the 4 videos on the XKR and wonder if you know the service history of the car and what is the odometer showing. Regards Mark

Hi Mark, thanks for watching :). To answer your questions, the car's at just over 103K miles right now and the Service History before I bought it (at around 80K miles) was good, but not perfect (I'm very picky about that). Once I bought it everything serviceable was done, including the Transmission Fluid, which Jaguar say is 'lifed', but the manufacturer says change every ~ 60K... TBH, the only real issues (despite the videos) was the VVTi seals and timing chain guides aging, which is not unusual at those kind of mileages (I've seen the exact same wear on the car in my next video, but that's another story!). At that initial point it should have been sorted by the first garage that worked on the car. Instead, their muck-up with the crank pulley bolt, led to a catastrophic overheat, which I think hastened the valve stem seals demise. Similarly, the piston rings weren't 'bad', just not 'good' either, and again a severe overheat won't have helped, I suspect. Hence, two rebuilds, albeit the first was free, but ultimately not thorough enough. This is partly my fault for not wanting any additional work done by that first garage, but valve stem seals and piston rings could have been added at FAR less cost. Oh well! In sum, the later AJV8 4.2 units are usually pretty bomb-proof if looked after, so I wouldn't take mine as anything representative, and I'd certainly have one of these XKRs over the later 5.0 units TBH. Mine should now be fully sorted and I don't expect any more issues with it.

@@MikeMacful Thankyou for the reply. I have a 2008 4.2L XKR with 57300 miles and Jaguar dealer service books. I bought the car at 57000 miles and have just had the transmission oil changed, transmission filter replaced and also the two coolant lines that pass under the supercharger. This was done as preventative maintenance. The two original coolant lines appeared fine, but I have peace of mind that they are renewed. I am in Australia, and as the car was sold new in Australia it has never seen salt. The underside is corrosion free. A very comfortable car to drive and with beautiful timeless flowing lines. I did instal an Autool X60 OBD 11 Smart Digital Meter to show engine coolant temperature as the main display. Its mounted on double sided tape on the flat surface between the steering wheel and instrument cluster. Its a round display of about 50mm diameter. Mark

@@stingray6922 It sounds like you have your priorities right, Mark! My coolant valley pipes went when driving just after I’d bought it. Quite an involved process to replace! I like the ability to monitor coolant temp - baffles me why Jag didn’t have a gauge on the cluster!! Would have avoided my engine popping probably. Agree ref looks too. For me, it’s the best looking Jag, bar the S1 E-Type, and my wife preferred it to a V8 Vantage (the other option on the table at the time). Hope yours proves trouble-free - should be!

What don’t you like about the 5.0 L units ?
@MikeMacful
@MikeMacful Жыл бұрын
The earlier ones (which were where my budget was at the time) had some issues with timing chains and a few other things, which put me off them. Later ones are better, I believe, but it’s been a while since I looked into it all so can’t remember a lot of the details.

These engines are usually good, and the XK is a lot less stressed than the XKR. I wouldn’t worry about it if it’s got good history and drives ok 👍

@@MikeMacful I believe the previous owner took well care of it, has a stack of good service records from him, but the owner before that im not quite as sure, that owner glued the glovebox shut when it had the failing hinge so I hope he didn’t have that method of dealing with things everywhere else too. otherwise it drives good, bit less smooth driving than an xk8 but the suspension and all looks good I think it’s the tires. gotta deal with something in the dash making a whistling sound soon though, bit annoying, could be duckbill? thanks

I got a 2007 XK with over 220k miles. Besides a couple of electrical gremlins it runs very well. The only things I had to do outside of normal maintenance was, water pump, valve cover and intake manifold gaskets, starter.

I think if you don’t have electrical gremlins, you don’t actually have a Jag… 😉

Where do you buy parts for rebuild I live in ca
@MikeMacful
@MikeMacful 2 жыл бұрын
Most of the parts used were sourced by the garage doing the work, but when I’m getting things I tend to use SNG Barratt. There’s other suppliers out there, but some use pattern parts and the quality varies…
