I inherited a Japanese folding saw with a wooden handle and a locking blade. My mother purchased it when we lived in Japan. We moved to the states in 1967! Still sharp as hell!

handmade folding saws (especially from Japan) are usually way ahead of mass production units. when a artist takes pride in what they make it really shows in the quality of their work hence the higher cost (usually). I've got a few handsaws that were passed down through a few generations in storage that even though they are rusty (working on cleaning them up) and haven't been sharpened since the early 1900's they are still crazy sharp even with a few missing teeth.

You know what I appreciate most about this guy? He doesn’t spend a quarter of the entire video explaining what he’s doing. No history of tree pruning, benefits of tree pruning, joy of tree pruning, no anecdotes about trees he has pruned in the past. It’s just, we’re going to test tree pruning saws today and then he gets right to it. I don’t know why that’s so hard for so many people.

As a Hiker/ woodsman/ back packer i really appreciate this video and for us outdoor people i personally would love to see a HATCHET show down! I bought my first Corona saw about 5 years ago for pruning around the yard. I was so impressed that I bought a smaller one to use for hiking. Both of them are still holding up pretty well. They put my old, much larger pruning saw to shame.

You can't imagine how happy this test was for me. I bought a Corona about 10 years ago and still use it. I love it! Silky has been promoted on so many outdoor videos that I thought I was missing out. @@kittytrail I don’t doubt it’s rebranded or at least made from global resources. I’m not hung up on Made in USA anymore. For the most part the quality here isn’t what it was years ago. Whatever a company puts their name on is a direct reflection upon themselves. Put your name on crap and soon your company name will be associated with crap.

I never go fishing or canoeing without mine. It has got me out of many jams very quickly. I will never use a machete again. Corora saws for the win. I have probably had mine 6 years.

Eye opening review. I was surprised to see that some of the less expensive brands like Corona, Samurai, and Gruntek beat out the Silky and Bacho which are about twice as expensive. I should have watched this before I bought my two Silky saws. Thank you Project Farm!!!

@吉田あぢべ I've known people who have used the Silky for years only changing out the blade as needed keeping their original handle. I think Silky was for many years the front of the pack for most people but they seem to have a lot stiffer competition these day. A long term use and wear test would be good, but outside the scope of this video.

I actually use these enough to go through blades and this review is in no way reflective of someone who holds one for hours at a time. Silky then bahco then Fiskars then corona for me. And you know what the best one is? The one that's sharp and there when you need it.

It's insane the amount of detail that goes into these videos, they are simply amazing. I have basically started living my life based off of your data testing. It's difficult to see anything that hasn't been tested yet but I would wonder either best sandwich bag/ziploc bag or best plant food product (although that would take quite some time I'd assume0

I've been using the Corona for the past year for cutting dirtbike trails. I've cut down up to 8 INCH TREES with this thing, and hundreds of trees altogether plus branches. It's AMAZING! Easily the best hand saw I've tried and it's still going strong.

Another interesting point for UK viewers - the Corona is very expensive to obtain here - around £40, but the Fujiwara is about £15, so for us, the Fujiwara would be a clear winner for performance combined with value.

Prices seem to be varying a lot by location; here in Germany the top 5 are priced at: Corona 50€ Samurai 52€ Fujiwara: No seller found; seems to have been sold at ~40€ at one point Gerber: 20€ Silky: 48€ So I went with the Corona even though I didn't intend to spend that much. The Gerber looks nice, but I had a not so great experience with a Gerber Hatchet, which was great in the beginning but dulled pretty quickly. Same seems to be happening here. In my opinion they are built to impress when you first get them but not to last. Since I actually use my tools, I don't like those kinds of stunts.

I bought the corona in September, and used it for everything, it really works well, and I have abused it keeping it in my truck bed and even using it to cut some scrap wood to fit in a trash bin and it's still awesome! Btw Popular Mechanics recommended it too.

Another practical test of everyday products. Your methods are sound. You get right to the point, and perform tests similar to actual use. Best parts: test results summary & where to buy links. In God we trust, all others bring data. Like you said, brand names, fancy logos & steep prices don’t always equate to better performance. Very satisfied subscriber.

i'm sure i've mentioned this before, but this is EXACTLY why i like watching these videos... name brand/expensive products vs mid range and cheap brands very straight forward tests, no excessive babble, and often learning something i should have been looking for that i didn't know about also, i do like seeing the less expensive brands beating out the more expensive brands, which happens quite often

I love how the boxes all brag, but you show us which ones really got the rights. Another awesome test, and this time I guessed right, that the Japan made blades would outperform the rest. They have that whole blade thing mastered by now, I'd bet. Thanks again, Todd, for an awesome test with such a clear result. Thanks for the tests! I was skeptical that someone could do a fair and scientific test of tree saws, but you managed it somehow, like you always do on your tests.👍 We've had the same or similar corona saw as in the test for about 20 years. After a lot of abuse like sawing roots underground, getting bent by abuse and hacking at many hard wood limbs it's only now getting to the end of its life. Not all of their tools hold up as well in terms of over all durability, but over all it's a great brand for pruning work and one that's easier to find in most hardware and gardening stores. They offer replacement blades for most of their more expensive cutters too which is nice.

I recently bought a Corona at Lowes and I've processed two Christmas trees for firewood next winter. The curved blade really helps dig into the wood on the pull. It's affordable and overall works great. I believe it's well worth the money and should last long time. Good to see how well it stacks up in this video.

@@johnquinn4680 If its a particularly thin tree or this saw was bought for more than just processing firewood then I see nothing wrong with buying this tool. Maybe he needed a general saw for small-ish things and the fact he used it for firewood just means it gets the job done. A lot of tools just aren't worth the price or the space and people make do with smaller ones even if it makes things harder. Though yeah a small saw like that wouldnt be my tool of choice for cutting up logs and did not make the connection at first. Personally I would use a hand axe though if it's something I did once or twice I'd see why I would instead just buy a saw which has more applications.

I have the Corona saw. I have been using it for pruning for the last 5 years and it's still cutting just fine. I've even cut down an oak tree that was around 4 inches in diameter with it. It went through it with no problems.

Oh boy, the bush craft community will be all over this test. There tends to be fierce product loyalty on this one. I have a Boy Scout Sira saw from '66. I did not understand the pull saw concept at the time, and bent it. It still cuts. I got a smaller one in the '80s for back packing. Later I found a bargain Corona. The unit lives under my tractor seat. What a marvelous tool. Too heavy for backpacking, a Bacho seemed right. It will cut bone. Silkies seem fragile. I found a snapped off blade, and made a fixed handle. By far the Corona has been my go to for nearly 20 years. Having M12 batteries I just went for the little chainsaw. It boggs down less with skip tooth chain. Thanks Chris

Great review. I purchased a Gerber in the late 90's as a deer hunting accessory. Besides working great as a limb saw in conjunction with my climbing stand, it also came with an interchangeable bone saw blade which is very useful when processing deer. I've used it several times a year every year since I bought it and it's still performing about as well as it did the day I got it. I've been very pleased with this purchase.

Fiskars = Gerber. They offer various cutting implements, but they own the Gerber brand and just rebrand Fiskars products as Gerber sometimes without even changing the design/colors.

I've used the Fiskars and I own a few Coronas... I'd gladly have 2 of the Coronas instead of 1 Fiskars and the way theyre priced thats about right. Performance wise the Corona wins, no doubt in my mind.

I always admire your innovative jigs for testing. Respect for your diligence in muscling through so many tests. I have both the Gerber and a larger Silky. Handle comfort is important. The handle on the Gerber can cut you. I have to use it with a glove. Nothing compares to the Silky. The blade quality is unmatched. I have accidentally folded it in half sideways with no damage.

Same, the thicker blade is a benefit when your pushing hard on the saw. Keeps it from bending easily and if it does start to to won’t become damaged. If your using your saw work silky is king.

@@EEStuff If i never put pressure down it wouldn't cut. You need some down pressure to have the teeth engage the wood and make a meaningful cut. The saws weigh so little that no down pressure would be ineffective.

I bought a Corona about 8 years ago and I have tested a ton of handsaws working in conservation and I'd agree it's a step above the rest. And the curve of the blade allows it to really do the work on pull strokes best. I have a Gerber and it honestly feels like a cheap toy..it sits in the truck as a backup if I lose the Corona. I agree with this guy! Great review

The Corona looks very, very similar to the Felco 600, also an awesome saw. Maybe they are made by the same factory? (Felco is also made in Korea.)

20 year landscaper. I love corona. 2 parameters worth measuring if this is revisited: force applied pulling back on the saw, I've had saws that just burn you out because they bite too hard. The other is cut quality. It's very important to make a clean cut. An ugly cut looks awful and can cause rot (retaining moisture) or even disease. Thanks for the vid!

I have & use the 240mm Silky Gomboy with a 9" blade. I saw surprised it lost it's sharpness after usage/ Do especially like that this cuts only on the PULL stroke.

@@azclaimjumper Every saw loses sharpness after usage more and more. Also that's why you often see lumberjacks sharpening their chainsaws despite having excellent brands. It is normal.

I'm very impressed by the Samurai brand. I have a fixed blade version I climb with. For a folding saw my go to (which wasn't tested) is an ARS GR-17. Maybe for an upcoming video you could test fixed blade pruning saws; ARS, Samurai, Corona, Silky, Fanno etc.

Something that I discovered recently that is really needed is a scissor and bottle jack test. These are the most common types of jacks found in cars to change tires in a pinch due to their light weight and compact size. They are also much more affordable than the more popular rolling type of jacks. Judging by their apparently well earned reputation of being on the sketchy side, it would be really interesting to see just how well they stack up against testing since they serve an emergency type service.

I have owned and used Corona saws for more than 15 years. For the money , they can't be beat . They are tough , wicked sharp , well priced and have good ergonomics. You can't go wrong . 😎👍🇺🇸🇺🇦

I work as a gardener and arborist. I carry the bahco in my pocket at all times. I picked it based in the fact it fits very well, it doesn't waste any space, and it seemed like the best quality option in price range. I'm very happy with its performance! I dont think many of these saws would pass my pocket test either 😅

Bahco Laplanders are not the best but they are probably the toughest. Thin blades buckle and snap and that's no fun when you are miles away from a hardware store.

yeah bahco isn't the "best" for everything but it's the perfect middle ground saw, and the blade can fold in half without breaking where a silky will snap if you accidentally bend it pretty quickly....... Bahco is what I'd carry for hiking/camping and in cold weather, it's tooth design is meant mostly for firewood, being, dry wood, and it cuts on the push AND pull where the other saws just have all the teeth on the pull only. There are advantages of bow-saw style blades like the bahco a lot of people don't realize. namely: it uses your muscles more evenly so you fatigue slower, it might not be the sharpest but it actually has the thinnest and strongest blade of carbon steel and thinner = less wood to cut to get through wood, and also if you have a little needle file (1 dollar) you can actually sharpen a bahco by hand with no specialized tools, where impulse-hardened saw brands are great, but cannot really be resharpened (they technically can but only with expensive, precision files, multiple angles, braces, and are much harder to do and can only be resharpened around 1-2 times maximum, for all intents they are disposable). And if you don't want to resharpen well, bahco replacement blades are a hell of a lot cheaper than a silky

I prefer and own the Corona, but have heard nothing but good things about the Bahco Definitely something to be said about a durable tool like that Bahco. I haven't had the Corona suffer any damage yet as I am careful with it but I don't think it would hold up as well in any sort of accidental abuse.

This is a good apples-apples comparison on these. I've been a Silky fan for a while, surprised to see it bested like it was! Having said that, one of the nice things about Silky is you can buy a saw from them in a huge variety of sizes, shapes, and tooth-per-inch setups. The TPI affects the cutting speed and (inversely) smoothness of cut.

I think if he had gone with anything bigger than the Pocketboy with the straight blade, the Silky would have come out on top. Notice that it is quite a bit smaller than the others, with a straight edge. That curve makes a big difference. And, they will last longer.

@@boomstickman71 his cutting efficiency rig kept the stroke length constant across all of the saws. Agreed that his hand-test would be biased towards a longer saw blade.

I don’t know if counts, but Milwaukee makes a folding handsaw in the Drywall section of Home Depot. It has a button to release the blade and it’s works mostly all Sawzall blades. It’s like $30 and has been a lifesaver in my job, especially when the battery power sawzall goes down. 10/10 recommend to anyone to keep in their toolbox.

I have a Corona 15 inch and it is amazing I've cut sooo much wood with it, hiking, taking down 10+ trees and it still cuts and works amazingly I believe I bought it for $17 years ago, paid for itself.

Great work. I was hoping for a test on how hard it is to pull those saws since I'd rather take 15 easy pulls vs 10 hard pulls to cut the same piece of wood.

Also tooth design can benefit different hardness of wood. If your cutting hardwoods you don’t want large aggressive teeth. But if your in softwood the larger teeth will help much more.

My mother has a non-folding version of the Samurai with a more pistol style grip and belt sheath she bought a few years ago from Amazon. It's been great for pruning small limbs and even some 3"-4" branches. It's still very sharp. :)

There are three channels I always look forward to weekly and yours is definitely one of them. There is a variation of this type of saw where you take a 1/2” or 3/4” aluminum tube and attach a sawzall blade to it. Supposed to be ultra light for backpacking and such. The Milwaukee carbide sawzall blades are what I saw was popular for that. Would be interesting to see how it stacks up.

@@andyh9382 You attach them to your shower faucet then you attach your shower head, the water will then be filtered for you to shower in. Chemicals in your tap water like chlorine can have a negative effect on your skin and hair health.

Great test! I own a longer, fixed blade Corona saw and I love it. If I was using it daily though, I bet it wouldn't last as long as a Silky. It just seems like it is more solid and durable.

All my trail/camping/off-roading "pruning" saws are Silky: KatanaBoy (500mm blade -- the SHORTEST blade KatanaBoy available), BigBoy (360mm blade) and GomBoy (240mm blade). All curved blades and XL teeth. Even though the Silky here in this test-video didn't do as well as the Corona, I chose Silky because of their consistently high owner-ratings, they DO cut well/quickly and seem well-made for long-life...and have replaceable blades when/if the original blade ever dulls (if you only use it occasionally, it will stay sharp for YEARS). The KatanaBoy is kept in my Jeep (to remove occasional downed tress blocking trails (no, did not want to carry gas/electric chain-saw for a couple of reasons) and the GomBoy for hiking/camping ("bushcraft") use: Smallest/lightest of the 3 yet still handles larger diameter trees/firewood. The in-between size BigBoy could also be used for 4x4 trail-clearing. Expensive, yes (especially the KatanaBoy models!), but in cases like this I apply the "Buy Once, Cry Once" principle. And I don't think any other brand would be THAT much better (even IF "better") for me to have bought them instead of my 3 Silkys, though likely they'd be WAY cheaper. Silky offers a number of models so there's probably a saw for just about anyone's needs...but I don't think ANYONE makes anything like the Silky KatanaBoy series...so it you want/need a "serious" saw like those, it HAS be be a Silky. -- BR

As an arborist I'm not a fan of Coronas for repeated use. They dull up relatively quickly. Silky is my go to. Their blades/sharpness will last me at least 3-4 times as long as coronas, and they sell individual blades so you don't have to purchase a whole new handsaw. Now, are you buying these to use only a few times a year in your own home? Then Corona is fine.

Wow, seeing the burr on the saw teeth at close is something. If the manufacturers cared of enough to remove the burr it might have give them advantage in initial sharpness test. Would love to see similar test on japanese woodworking saw, although I can see that it is too much of a niche for this channel. Great work as always, looking forward for the next video.

Japanese saws work on the push instead of the pull. Really the only difference. Because of working on the push they can be more flexible in how you make a cut, but also harder to cut straight.
