For our last episode of Projections for the year, we review Dr. Grordbort's Invaders, Weta Gameshop's impressive augmented reality action game. Plus, we take a look at another new Magic Leap experience, Luna: Moondust Garden, and its approach to storytelling in augmented reality.

(Wanted to point out that the framerate for the Dr. G capture seems low because the headset is running both the game and video capture at once. Without video capture, the game runs much more smoothly!)

Wow Magic Leap doing worse than a HoloLens did 4 years ago. Glad Magic Leap is finally out, but honestly this Demo just proves how little AR has progressed since HoloLens. Really hope the launch of NREAL and RealMax 100 AR sets this year brings in some much needed competition. Microsoft are you listening??? Pls...pls...pls let the rumours be true...HoloLens 2.0 this year.

That those weapons haven't been featured in any kind of interactive medium isn't true. Some of those weapons were part of the 2011 "Dr. Grordbort's Victory Pack Update" for Team Fortress 2.

Very cool. However, why can’t AR take a cue from CGI building projections and just ignore (maybe even wallpaper over) picture frames and windows on your walls to give you more play surfaces for portals, etc? Of course, I can understand the need to keep floor obstructions in the 3D model but they should be able to take artistic license with your walls and ceiling, even dressing them up for the experience.

These games are neat. But I'm most interested in the professional aspects of these AR headsets. I work on a PC 8 hours a day. Would love to replace my dual monitor setup with an AR headset such as magic leap.

Same -- the professional & the personal applications. I would love to get rid of every screen in my life... computer, TV, smartphone, etc. -- I fully intend to only use AR once consumer ready AR glasses are polished & available.

Hi, it's been awesome seeing the VR and AR headsets, and the new games for them. From the interview with the creators and this gameplay, Dr. Grordbort's looking really fun. I can't wait to find out what games and experiences are coming out next! Keep it up!!

I feel that the prices for the headset as well as the quality you're getting isn't really worth it at this time compared to something like the Oculus Quest, but it does look like AR might over take VR in some spaces like possibly Digital Arcades were they utilize AR goggles to simulate say a Laser Tag game but it looks like you're actually shooting each other with lasers or maybe the Arcade Owners could create Dummy Arcade Cabinets that in the AR Space look like your playing an Arcade of YOUR choosing. Basically, I see AR taken over the Amusement Industry whilst VR takes over the Home Entertainment Industry

AR and even VR is very young technology. We can see that just under a few years the VR headsets got more affordable, more "finished product" like. For example the PS VR is a fairly affordable experience. Of course you sacrefise the fairly big movement space of Vive and the controls of Ocolus Touch. But the path is clear: More affordable headsets -> More users -> More game content In the next few years with the developement of these technologies and the more optimized manufacturing the price of the AR headsets will fall massively. Sidenote: Interesting fact that the MS and Sony lose money on every sold XBox and PS in the first few years after launch. They get their money back from gamesales. Maybe a similar businessmodell would be possible for the headset devs.

It's good you guys are covering Magic Leap and AR but I still feel having something in your own AR room rather than in an never before seen VR room is a novelty will wear off quite quickly. Multiplayer is something that would make it really worthwhile. Right now we are far from recreating our bodies 1:1 in VR so Magic Leap has a clear advantage here, plusbeing in same physical space shooting robots would be a ton of fun :D

AR is amazing because it has infinite possibility to basically become _the_ new computing device... gaming is just one tiny little side-project for AR. Unlike VR, AR is general purpose just like a PC or a smartphone.

Want to see if I could get a give away system it sounds so cool and wish I could add /make games would love to see limitations of what's starting to only begin the next gen gaming and it they could make a cheaper one with that already out as you said some bugs could be re mods to just restore distance other may be that it needs an extra memory head set to scan and memories your space as well other multiple users would make ready player One a run for their money

The calibration process and requirements for wall space are going to be too much effort for most people. Space is a big problem for VR but looks like for AR gaming it's going to get even more specific... You have to be out of your mind if you think most people are going to rearrange their living space to this extent... There's a novelty to effort equation there that most tech geeks are incapable of properly analyzing because they have geek blinders on... Oh well, companies will learn their lesson from their losses.

I don't really get it, seems like all the effects are ghostly, not solid thru and thru. Seems like it I can see right thru a mpc, gun or character I'm fighting, that might feel less convincing.

What you're seeing is not shot through the lens. The video capture creates a constant transparency that isn't actually always there when using the headset. Magic Leap only just recently updated the capture software to enable objects to appear more solid, but you have to look for and change that setting manually.

Eh... Seeing this video makes me even more skeptical of AR than before. VR has simpler rules for your space, and changes that space completely into a large-scale spooky mansion. Whiles seeing ghosts in your home in AR for the first time will have a unique psychological impact, I could see it quickly getting old if every level and every game uses the same few references points for things to pop out of.
