Well he’s a Prince of Kislev, which would imply one of the following. 1.) He is Katarin’s brother in which case the romance would be kinda weird and not work out. This in turn would also mean Gerik is also Katarin’s brother. Nowhere in the lore does it mention Katarin having siblings. Also, I’m pretty sure Gerik and Yuri both have sernames that aren’t Bokha so this one is right out. 2.) He is her fiancé, as the fiancé’s of royalty are referred to by the titles of prince-consort, or princess-consort. No confirmation yet, but if what you are implying about the intro letter is true (I didn’t get that vibe from the letter btw. It came off more as an order from a Queen to her subject to me) then this could be the case. Personally I would go with option 2 since it makes the most sense as the future Tzar-Consort of Kislev would need to prove himself to the people, and what better way to prove onces self than to rescue their peoples god? Plus I’m a huge sucker for the fallen hero tragic backstory trope and the rom-dram that occasionally accompany them.

Ok, I actually did some digging and apparently there is a short story that came out along with the game called ‘Son of Kislev’ that pretty much confirms that Yuri and Katarin were lovers. So number two is practically confirmed minus the whole being engaged part. But I’d say it’s pretty safe to infer.

@@ryantay9642 There’s also the racism complication because he is an Ungol Prince and not a Gospadar. Katarin having a secret Ungol lover who later goes on to almost murder their god on a mission she sends him on should create some serious political blowback but I don’t think it’s addressed in the main campaign. I haven’t played the Katarin campaign yet. Maybe it’s in there in some quest flavor text but I don’t know yet.

@@yellowbeard1 In Katarin's intro cutscene, she says that some think she is at fault for the situation and no longer deserves to rule. There is no mention of her implied romance with Yuri (if anyone else even knows about it) or of relations between Ungols and Gospadars, but she does appear to be suffering backlash for sending out the one who shot Ursun.

@@ryantay9642 He's a Prince because Emperor Magnus the Pious awarded his family the title of Prince during the last Chaos Invasion. It's an Empire title, not a Kislev title, and one that doesn't come with any additional land or income. Nobody in Kislev takes it seriously and he himself doesn't even like using it. He's just a minor ungol lord. And while he was Katarin's lover, he's not betrothed to her because a lot of Kislev nobles are prejudiced against Ungols and he's not politically important enough to marry a Tzarina.

Let's say we use the 16th and 17th century as a reference (not quite right but it's a mix anyway and it mostly fits), the global world population would be asking 500-600 million, most of which would be settled around the temperate zone and only very few living in the more extreme conditions. Even today, with all of our technology, if you look at the northern regions you'll notice very sparse population density. For example, all of the nordic countries combined don't even reach the 30 million mark. Compare that to a central European country and you'll find that most surpass that number by themselves. And the conditions in the nordic countries are still quite well. The conditions for the chaos wastes/tribes are more akin to conditions in northern Siberia only much, much worse. Children need to grow up before they can go fight. And during that time they all still need to eat. Do the chaos wastes look like a place to cultivate a lot of food?

After hearing Ursun speak near the end there, i feel like the voice in the intro speaking to Yuri *was* Ursun. Be'lakor probably loosened Ursun's bonds just enough to let him speak to Yuri, ensuring that Yuri would have real reason to travel into the Chaos Wastes and setting in motion everything that happens next. Be'lakor is devious enough to do something like that.

Here's what I think his reasoning was: Kislev is going to die without Ursun. He sets out to find Ursun on his own but made zero progress. Then he heard Ursun's voice, which began guiding him. After that he started doing chaos stuff to obtain more power and find his way, with 'Ursun' telling him it was okay. All the stuff he did - reading chaos tomes, picking up a chaos sword, navigating a Tzeentchian labyrnith, binding a daemon, killing his brother, etc. began to warp his body and mind. Then he finally reaches Ursun, only to discover that Ursun had nothing to do with any of this. And that Ursun is apparently so weak it couldn't prevent itself from being captured by a mere Daemon Prince. And remember that Ursun getting captured is the reason he came out here to do all this shit in the first place. If Be'lakor hadn't pretended to be Ursun to guide him, he probably would have froze to death in the chaos wastes. If he hadn't resorted to all that dark and chaotic shit over the course of the prologue, he never would have been able to reach Ursun at all. You see a bit of inner conflict in his eyes - one was orange, while one was blue. Blue is his natural eye colour, so there was still some goodness in him, warring with the chaos corruption. But then the eye turns orange, and the corruption wins out. At that point, he's not Yuri Barkov anymore. It's unclear when exactly Yuri Barkov first began to fade away - perhaps when he picked up that sword, or read that journal - but he's been slowly losing himself and his mission throughout the campaign. At this point he no longer really cares about Kislev, or about Ursun, or about Katarin. He just wants power. Then Be'lakor (who has been nothing but helpful thus far) promises him more power, and he takes the shot.

@@Former_Halo_Fan Sorry for necroposting, but Be'lakor was not a mere Daemon Prince. In ancient times he was THE daemon prince. He annihilated many ancient races and was considered the greatest Chaos champion, but he became more arrogant with each boon given by the Chaos gods. So they punished him after his rebellion by granting daemonhood to worthy mortal worshippers and with each daemon prince ascension Be'lakor's powers were stripped, making him just one of many. After the creation of Great Vortex daemons were banished from mortal realm, but then daemon princes were able to invade the realm when the winds of magic were too strong. Except for Be'lakor who was not allowed to. Even more humiliating for him was the fact that he was forced to cross the realms only when an Everchosen was crowned, making Be'lakor an advisor to the Everchosen, rubbing salt into his wounded pride. He was free from that curse only when Archaon was crowned.

The Bullet needed to be fueled by by a the renouncement of faith and one who had been through a dark baptism (someone so full of chaotic energy they could ascend as a Daemon Prince)

I think for the most part is him wounding Ursun and his hatred for Belakor that he shares with them, since he betrayed them and tries to overthrow/overpower them

Because narrations require a linear progression while wargame settings are based around the characters with conclusion untold. It's hard to have a narrative when there's no stake due to canon of the characters keeping them around. We know Belakor is never going to be defeated permanently We know Grimgor will never conquer all of the world. We know Archeon will be driven back, etc etc.

They made it pretty obvious what was going to happen to Yuri pretty much from the get-go, but that didn't take anything away from how good the prologue story was. And GW doesn't seem to care all that much if the game isn't 1:1 with the lore. Maybe it's just because of how popular TWW is but CA was clearly allowed to take some liberties with the source material. Don't tell me you wouldn't want to play a game where Nagash actually succeeds or Thanquol finally has one of his plans work.

Especially in fantasy/high fantasy they all tend to follow similar tropes (except for the End Times I suppose). The good guys win, the hero gets the girl, some elf people are snobby, etc. Do you think people read Lord of the Rings only looking forward to Frodo destroying the ring? You should go back in time and tell JRR Tolkien that only the destination matters so that he could have saved a lot of time, and a lot of trees.

So, even though it has saved your people for centuries, the one time it needs help so that it can continue to stop the worst of chaos from killing your entire country you say screw it only weaklings need the help of others and then proceed to kill it. Talk about short sightedness.
