Prometric Skills Demo for Passive range of motion ROM exercises to one shoulder

According to Prometric guidelines for the nurse aide state exam, this is a step-by-step demonstration video to provide passive range of motion exercises to one shoulder. This skill is one of the 21 testable skills on the Texas State CNA Exam. Remember to include indirect care with this skill. The evaluator will tell you which arm to exercise.

Dr Lee,Thank you so much, I watched your videos for almost three weeks and on 30th November 2023 I Sat for my Exams both Written and Skills and I passed. I had PROM for Shoulder, Catheter care, Drainage urinary.I say many thanks to my instructor / Teacher Ms Debbie from Journey Allied Health Training Center in Peekskill New York,who emphasized that I should only watch your videos and I did just that.God Bless you.

When you do the abduction do you raise the arm to the shoulder or all the way straight next to the head? Thank you for doing these videos

Hello Albert, Prometric does NOT require rotating the shoulder.

Is it mandatory to use gloves or is it okay to do it without the gloves and wash my hands after the skills. My exam is coming up on the 15th. Thank you

Hello, You do not need to wear gloves when performing ROM. Yes, you must wash your hand at the end of each skill. I tell my students to tell the evaluator "I am washing my hands and then to say I am through with my skills".

Hello Dr. Lee, I'm confused when you did it to the mannequin you went up with the mannequin's arm then you went out 3 times but toward the end of your video when you were doing it on yourself you went up with your arms then you went to the side with your arms 3 times so which one is the right way to do it? Hello, The ROM for the shoulder requires two types of movement. #1. Raise the full arm from the mattress to the HOB and back to the mattress #2. Move the arm from the side of the body upward to be even with the shoulder area and back to the side.

hi dr lee, will the mannequin/ person be sitting in a chair or laying in the bed? If they do happen to be sitting in the chair when we're preforming the abduction do we raise the arm to the head or do we stop at shoulder length?

Hello Courtney, The ROM skill will occur with the patient in the bed.

I have been watching your video and preparing for my test. I’m in the State of Iowa and we test under Pro-metric. I will like to know during the test are they only testing on flexion and extension, abduction and adduction? No rotation?

Hello, There are three ROM skills. None of the skills have rotation as a step.

Hello Aizha, No, you don't have to use the medical terms while performing the skill. You can talk to the patient in plain English so that the patient knows what you will be doing.

At prometric is the range of motion only done on one shoulder meaning are we only tested on the shoulder I’m so confused because we went from Pearson vue now to prometric and my teacher never told us the testable skill like she did with Pearson

Hello HTownGurl17, The ROM will only be done on ONE arm or ONE leg. Both Pearson Vue and Prometric will test for ROM to one side of the body during the state exam. The way Prometric does ROM is a little different from Pearson Vue. Please pay attention to the videos because Prometric has three different ROMs.
