How did a 21st birthday celebration in the quiet, rural valley of Waiohau end in the tragic murder of much loved partner, and father of five, Jamaine Wharton? In a special three part investigation by reporter John Boynton Jamaine's whānau share his story, their loss, and look into what the future holds for the teenage killer. His aunt Sharon Ranui, partner Rachel Cairns, friend Tia Kohu, sister Jasmine Tapara, and Grace Foundation's Dave Letele all talk about that night. Roger Tutakangahau, Kayleb and Kelly Renata and Billy Dean Reiner were all convicted for their part in the murder.
Made with the support of Te Māngai Pāho and NZ On Air.

Watching this broke my heart. It angers me how disgusting cowards like this can terrorise innocent victims for no reason only to be given a “smack on the wrist” by our pathetic justice system. I send all my love to Jamaines whanau. RIP JAMAINE

Rest In Peace Jamaine🕊 The cowardly act by those mongrels will never be forgiven!! Watching this really broke my heart for him and his whanau! I can’t stop thinking of him and his family! What a disgrace the justice system is, they will get out and commit the same crime! I hope they feel guilt and shame especially that lady who encouraged the violence!!!! 🕊RIL Jermaine🕊 Much love to his family ❤️

@@taniawilliams14sorry 10years ain't nothing when ur feed 3 times a day got a bed and roof guaranteed for him everyday and rehabilitation for free. And we as Jamaines family have to sit in the appeals court next year new law states all youth offenders can appeal their sentences so the life part he has a chance to take off. What about our son ??? Who gets no choice! Who has NO choice but to live this life sentence without his father and a broken mother. It's been 3 years already and we been fighting every year since court when do we get peace as a family. Shit some days I'm not eating to feed my babies out here in this free world while he does not need to worry where he will get his next meal from. Make it make sense for me please 🙏.

It’s very sad to hear Dave Letele say that the perpetrator is the victim. What about their whanau dave. That was a shocking statement to make. It leaves me to think that your gang life is still at the heart of who you serve. I looked Upto you and your son but I don’t know I feel about that now. Said with honesty and true heart.
@mattparr3038

Hes not excusing the perpertrators actions, simply saying how it is, he's a victim In the way he was raised, didn't have a chance in life. Letele acknowledges the real victim is the man who lost his life.

Devastating!! My heart and love and prayers to Rachel, your children and family. Jam looked like such a sweet gentle soul💔 I moved back to nz waimana from Australia with my 4 sons and have witnessed the gangs in the area and the warnings we have had to not wear certain colours where we go. Having 4 sons its scary and sad to have to think about this. My oldest son asks to go partys and this is the exact reason why i always say no!!! you cant guarantee what nature of people will go to partys. I am so so sorry this happened to such a beautiful man❤

@@HEILESTwrong the importance of celebrating 21st is dated back to medieval times and has nothing to do with America. The Americas did not really have a medieval period bc there was never a true system of feudalism established by societies, many Amerindian societies remained nomadic or semi-nomadic, and even many of the settled ones were fairly egalitarian.
