I am a veteran mechanic with 5 more years until I can retire. My only wish is that I live long enough to see cars and machines broken down everywhere with no one to fix them. Sounds heartless, But that's what the world deserves for paying and treating us like crap for years.

Encourage people to learn how to fix their own cars. It's the only solution I can see. If nobody wants to work on them and there's nobody to fix them manufactures will just make the cars disposable which is where we are heading anyways. Nobody has to work on a car if it's not able to be fixed when broken. Take a look at what they've done with smartphones and computers. Cars are on the same path

I have been a mechanic for 20+ years . Largest problems I had low, pay stupid bosses, and even dumber customers. Ultimately, I walked away, became a private contract mechanic. Charged what I wanted worked for who I wanted. Implied no warranties. My clients like me because I tell them the truth, even when it hurts . I also recommend everyone stay away from these new vehicles with all these computers in them. They are not getting a better vehicle. Silicon Valley is just running a racket. Where is cheaper to buy a new vehicle that it is to replace a computer in the vehicle you have now . Ultimately the industry itself as locking the consumer out of their vehicles. Actually already you can't even change a battery in a vehicle without having factory software to Mary the battery to the vehicle. The industry attempts to convince people that they're trying to help them to prevent theft . When in the end, the customer is actually getting screwed by the industry. But unfortunately, the average citizen is so stupid. They can't even realize it and you can show them the information that tells them exactly that and they will not listen. Ultimately, I believe the industry is goal as a whole is right in line with you will own nothing and be happy . All vehicles will be rentals from the dealership. The tire wears out you a new car.🤷🏻‍♂️ ultimately keeping you in a cycle of debt you can never escape .

I switched out of the auto industry to heavy equipment. The work is harder, but I get paid A LOT more an hour and I'm paid hourly + overtime, no more flat rate. I got told "I'm sorry I've got to give you this job, but if I give it to X mechanic he'll just blow it off" one too many times. I watched guys write up every job for rear brakes when the the brake pads were at 5mm and came new at 8-10mm, making bank while I diagnosed all the electrical issues and squeaks and rattles under warranty. I was shooting myself in the foot telling people "Your brakes are getting low, but you can make it another oil change, let's do them then" because when that car came back next time I'd never get it, but the guy trying to hose everybody was making plenty. I was suffering for trying to be honest and my family was suffering too. I had always had the idea that if I was honest, and I took care of you, you would come back and I would make more in the long run taking care of you than I would taking advantage of you once or twice. In the end all I was doing though, was lending my good name to the dealership who was happy to watch the other guys be shady and make both themselves and the dealership more money. Now, I've learned a new skill that everyone wants and almost nobody has. I have a company truck with all my tools in it, a fuel card, a company phone and a company credit card. My company pays for my meals if I'm out of town and pays for my hotel rooms if I need to stay out overnight. We still have a Christmas party and they let our managers buy us food for meetings and just randomly do cookouts if the managers want to. On top of all that I walked into my managers office two years ago, showed them an add for a local customer that I go to help when they can't figure out what's wrong with their garbage trucks, and said "I need a $7 an hour raise to compete with this" and two weeks later I signed my raise paperwork. The auto manufacturers are screwing their mechanics. The flat rate times have been cut and cut and cut for warranty for far too long. The price of tools has sky rocketed and the job itself has always been rough on the people doing it. To all you younger auto mechanics out there, use the dealer for the only thing they're good for, get trained up, learn everything you can from them, then move onto a better deal. Eventually they will have to adjust to the market, but you can bet your last dollar they'll have to be dragged, kicking and screaming, the whole way. Don't let them use you up and then spit you out a broken, poor mess, you use them. There are much better opportunities out there, my current company is so much better, sure there's plenty of stupid crap that goes on, but man, it's night and day different from the hell that the dealerships were. Any time I get frustrated I just think to myself "Would I consider going back to a dealer?" and the answer is always a resounding "NO!" If you have knowledge, skills, the tools to use them and are willing to work, you are worth way more than you think.

I disagree. Many, if not most, repair shops (namely independent) are not really greedy. Often they are unwittingly subsidizing customers' vehicle service. The owners of these businesses are often in worse shape or marginally better than their employees.

This is just what I've experienced, the tech school I went to part of the course was to work in a shop for a week from a list of shops that signed up to be part of the school. They only had me do oil changes and on the second day the shop manager and the guy I was shadowing were trash talking the school and myself about you can trust kids or the tech school, because you have to teach them everything. I contacted the school and I was able to leave that day and get a completion grade because of that. I tried other shops and even a national road side service company, right in the interview no talent no skills without being able to show what I can do. Even when hired I have to work for managers that have no understanding of equipment or vehicles but can "talk the talk", low pay, bad bosses who from the time you interview belittle you, hold you back and take the credit of getting things done until you leave the job and higher management takes the word of the lower managers. Even bringing my vehicles to shops for work that I can't do because I don't have a lift to to complete the repair they waste my time of having no vehicle and don't do the repair because they can't diagnosis it, until I walk on to the shop floor and physically point out the problem and they still charge me a diagnostic fee after, which I do get my money back after going up the ladder. To which the higher management always says , "yeah, we can't find anyone that can help diagnosis." I just shake my head and walk away because this is what's going on and not getting corrected. As for the national roadside company, it's sad and scary what they do to workers and members. But long for a comment, tried to be as brief as possible.

Then come the threats of legal action, etc. I'd rather work for someone else. Which I do. You just have to BE part of the core group of techs who stick it out. As an engineer I have noticed that cost reduction efforts in my industry trump servicability. Manufacturers wipe their hands once it's off the factory floor and when the warranty has expired. Since they pay half the flat rate for warranty work anyways they are getting cheap labor on warranty repairs. It costs less to pay for the increased labor times for the warranty work than it does to manufacture the car in a way that's easier/faster to work on. Trust me that every penny is accounted for and manufacturers are optimizing their costs they don't care about the bigger picture.

Worker shortages are always due to low pay. The one thing to point out for shop owners is the incredibly expensive software subscriptions for repair, software updates, to work on these newer cars ~2014+. $5 here. $8k there for this manufacturer. $3k for this manufacturer. This is on top of the diagnostic and repair hardware. You can just buy a diagnostic tool, you also have to maintain the monthly / yearly subscription. Makes a barrier to entry going into business yourself - you can get a one size fits all scan tool but you'll lack some features available only to manufacturer specific hardware/software. Need to work on commercial trucks? Get a Bosch HDS 1000 Tablet only $10k! And that's just one tool.

I spent 60 hours a week in a dealership shop. For one pay period i got a $400 paycheck. That is just over $3 per hour. I quit the same day. I haven't worked in a shop since. As long as shops are allowed to pay less than a livable wage they will keep losing techs.

I was a auto tech from 1983 to 2006 and Got tired of constantly buying tools that never ends as well as the low pay for being a Master ASE Tech and went into another Trade and never looked Back.

As someone mentioned, shops charge the customers $180 per hour more or less for labor. Thats off of YOUR backs. Go get your rightful portion. That said i think we are rapidly approaching a breaking point. I am a skilled DIY'er and have done everything from basics like oil and brakes to waterpumps, radiators, power window motors, fuel injectors, and CPU installs. However my free time is valuable and i'd prefer to farm the work out to qualified professionals. That said when i reach out for estimates, i often get numbers that are ridiculous and so will make time to do the work. I save considerable money and i know the job is done right with an attention to detail that probably would not be there were it done by someone else.

Eliminate flat rate and start paying mechanics what they are worth. Otherwise, suck it up and enjoy the shortage of good mechanics.

I make about 100k a year and I cannot believe how much it costs to get a mech to fix stuff. I hate fixing my own shit but I HAVE to when the parts cost a ton and the labour doubles or triples the price.

3:15 3,4 days to change an engine......for a van!! I know vans are more difficult to get at things...but , I seen engines pulled in a few hours. No wonder you cannot handle your volume. I seen engine /Trans took weeks, because the new swap in were not OEM and had to play tricks. Like a Chevy small block into a Landcruiser or dump the turbo 350 and have a Turbo 400 instead. This is nothing new, in the early 80s , when cars went sensors and computer controls, a whole generation of points and condensor mechanics were forced to retire, it was no fun looking for someone who have the tools and training to fix your new cars. If there are real shortages, pay should rise , I hear cries for truck driver shortages for 3+ decades, pay actually getting worse. Maybe employers cry shortage when there are less than 5 people lining up for that one job? Most of the cries of shortages come from employers with low pay and poor working conditions.

I hope all repair shops of all types close the doors. Leaving no support for the mfgs over engineered p.o.s. When you have to remove a front facia to change a blinker light...that's a sign. My 77 Nova...2 screws. R&R 5... minutes.

It is also the over complexity of these HIGH unnecessary tech vehicles with brittle breakable parts. Like someone in the comments said, they deserve it. They deserve it for being non humble snobs wanting all the blows in whistles when they just need basic reliable transportation

Last time I bought a new vehicle and had to take it in for other than routine maintenance, it took 6 visits (to the stealership) before the problem was correctly fixed. It was a badly routed wiring harness that was worn through and shorted the 5V communication wire in the body control module. Mind you, this was back in 2012. I now use a local independent shop and they are great people to work with.

Just had a similar deal on a Workhose RV. (8 litre gas engine) the UART commo wire was rubbed through on the frame, intermittently shorting, causing elect throttle shut off. Owner had replace the throttle body assy 4 times recently, to no avail. Took almost a day to find/fix. All caused by poor wite loom install from the factory.

no body is struggling to find auto techs their struggling finding "A" mechanics willing to work for slave wages every shop in my area charges over 100 an hour plus parts mark up but not willing to pay up that"s why i went out on my own and i encourage every mechanic i know to demand more money or work for someone that will pay

i got mad when i had to separate the engine from its shaft on a weed wacker in order to replace the primer bulb. manufacturing design teams and their service hostility - its everywhere. getting in the crossfire in a war between manufaturer and consumer.

A bigger problem I'm seeing is that manufacturers are expecting mechanics to have engineering degrees just to do routine maintenance on newer models of cars- with increased electrical complexity and part complexity, engine design has become ridiculously tedious to work on. American and European manufacturers are designing cars with maybe not the intention, but to the effect of, angering mechanics nationwide
@kjhnsn7296
@kjhnsn7296 10 ай бұрын
Exactly. That additional layer of unnecessary complexity is engineered in to force/intimidate owners to bring their cars to the dealers for even the slightest things. That same complexity makes what should be a simple job for a tech that much more tedious and time consuming. Indeed the crampness of a modern engine compartment compared to vehicles I used to work on years ago is crazy!

@kjhnsn7296 crazy how just 15 years ago you could still find new cars that you could legitimately fit half way into the engine bay

3:25 yea i would rather quit n collect unemployment, rather than work for ur fat ass making $15 an hour WORKING ON CARS!!!! Idk y this industry pays like its a fast food company. Lube techs should be starting at least at $20 an hour. I applied to be an A tech and in the interview when he told me itll pay $20 an hour, i just got up n left.
