Today I go outdoors with my Hasselblad 501cm film camera and a roll of Portra 160 film. I start the day feeling uneasy and anxious, but things soon turn around and my mental health improves once I start engaging with the landscape. I encounter a heavy snow storm as I enjoy some landscape photography. I am forever being drawn to the smaller, more intimate scenes and images. This video demonstrates that not everything needs to be a big, epic view.

I sympathise. Last summer I went out walking a lot, but the recent bad weather has kept me indoors and even though the weather was fine today, I made excuses and didn't go out for a walk. I think I'm going to have to reintroduce myself to the outdoors very gently, like returning a creature to the wild after it's been in captivity for too long.

Appreciate your emotional honesty. Being in lockdown makes me feel like I’m not accomplishing anything (Ontario, Canada). I get outside about 4 times a week to hike and that’s been a mental health boost. Love grasses in snow! And the mounds of snow on ice. Simple images that are peaceful. We have tons of snow here. Take care.

For me, that sense of agitation is common in the early part of an outing and I know that it will eventually be relieved when nature reveals the shot to me. Then the right brain takes over the left, and the excitement overcomes the agitation. I really appreciate that you shared the struggle that we all go through and not make it look so easy. Thank you!

Cheers Thomas, I was out and about the weekend before last and we had snow and it was AMAZING. I had such a blast and was pumped full on energy like a squirrel on caffeine. Like you said - FOMO. Because there was such a long drought of being inside, having nothing "special" to look for except your videos. And your videos helped me a TON - I basically binged everything I could because I was going insane. Keep it up and remember: We're all in this together. Haha. Nope. Not just you. One of my favorite shots this year so far is exactly that; a few blades of grass popping out of the snow. And that sheep shot at the end...pure joy. Love that. And I think that's exactly why you were agitated to start - you didn't seem present. But it seems like once you became part of your surroundings instead of just an observer of them, everything shifted. Yup, being outdoors works every time! Thanks for doing what you do.

You actually are in a better place than you think when you're feeling that agitation, just by the fact that you caught yourself feeling it. Most just get caught up and taken for the ride. Take a deep breath, appreciate the moment around you, don't run from the feeling, accept it, and know that like all things "this too shall pass." And it does.

Beautiful video Thomas. You have always been able to portray the excitement of your photography. I connected deeply with how you expressed your troublesome feelings. I use my woodland and landscape photography to help with my mental health but you showed how important it is to not put pressure on it being the complete solution, to slow down and just enjoy being out there. I did laugh at the end when you were photographing the sheep. At about the 15:45 -16:00 min mark as you were explaining your excitement about the sheep and if you watch in the back ground every sheep wandered off the screen and I though you were going to turn around and they would all be gone. Thanks again.

I loved the picture of the sheep! Good winter month calendar picture. Also loved the two grass and snow images. You had a good day!

Everything you said about feeling agitated and rushed feels so relatable to me. I think with the work I do it makes me that way and it’s hard to just stop sometimes to relax and take my time.

Thank you Thomas for another great video and for sharing your experiences with lockdown and how you feel being outdoors. Hopes it motivates me to go out more too. The image of the wiggly sticks is my favorite.

This video really resonated with me, especially the discussion about mental health, and that feeling of rushing. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and perspective. I also really enjoyed the images you captured. Thanks again and stay safe!

Thanks for being so REAL about your emotional state! Great message to share as so many of us are struggling but we are not alone and getting out in nature’s so inspiring and uplifting!

Photography is amazing for you, at least it has been for me. Some years back I had been laid off and was feeling quite depressed. I took my camera with me when I brought the kids to a local playground and just started to take photos of them. Just that simple act pulled me out of my dark hole and helped me feel good again. I find myself back there now due to being laid off again recently, so I’m bringing my camera with me everywhere to help keep me from falling into depression.

A breath of fresh air with that video, I totally agree there’s nothing quite like getting out with the camera to clear the mind. Some stunning photos there too, the sheep one is surprisingly good, excellent even.

That last one was magical! Also, props on being so open and honest. It's hard to always maintain an image and a brand, but I can only imagine it's actually harder to just be 100% honest with an audience

Props to u thomas, i trained as a photographer in 1990 but never pursued it as a career becoming a graphic designer instead, however i have always pursued the photography craft for my own well being, landscape photography being one of my favourite genres.... i have followed u for years and just wanted to say i appreciate your candour.
