Yes I just noticed this recently, I put the dying momma's in a cardboard box, with the leaves coming out of the top of the box. Water them now and again and if they have little nodes at all, they will grow. Also small pups on their own can survive.

My friend just gave me a very ugly dying bromeliad. I’ve never had bromeliads before so was wondering how I could revive it. Thank you for this information! There IS hope!

You can, plant it in a pot with some compost/sand in the bottom so she can have the pot hold her up. Plant her in that shallow soil. Keep moist but not soggy. Leave in shade. Takes a couple of months but they will pop up.

I've had one of these abandoned to my care for about 10 years. It bloomed twice. It was in a nice pot. Wanted the pot back so I dug it out, divvied it out to 3 generic empty pots pots into a well-placed spot soon to become an awesome hedge! I kinda got the bug for this plant now. Great video and my "like" boosted you (deservedly) to 1K. Subscribed for more. :)

This is my most favorite plant..I bought one this summer and it had 3 nice size pups ! So I cleaned the mommie plant up..refreshed her soil..and she is producing 2 more now ! I had also pitched another bromeliad and she has 2 very small pups peeking out ! So excited ! I want to learn how to grow them out of the soil... Great video !!

I did not know Bromeliads were semi-terrestial until I saw the actual root condition In your former video. It is why I mounted that one you sent me. Doing very well. New growth is coming on and should be nice with the brassavola and encyclia. Let them mix. I am fine with that. All on one mount! Nice second to hold drinks. Please do a Garden Tour Highliting blooms!

Yes there are many broms that go both way while there are others that are strictly one way or the other...such as your cryptanthus variety that are true terrestrial and would not survive without media. The one that you got from me is a neoregelia and can be mounted or potted. They are not picky at all. I am hoping you got some pups from it and it has continued to grow well with your mounted orchids!

I think that if you trimmed back the "dying mommas" foliage, not to the root but cut back to where she still cups some food and water. Then no energy is wasted trying to maintain the dying foliage. All of her energy that she gathers from her core functions of gathering nutrients and creative life energy, will be more narrowly dedicated to sustaining her species via propagation. Again instead of supporting what's left of her. Kind of like when you do big trimmings or sculpting to bonsai, where a significant amount of foliage is removed. You would also cut back the roots. Because the tree no longer need as many roots to sustain the lesser amount of branches and foliage. If not trimmed, the roots would likely die back anyway, just because of the tree trying to find balance in itself. But then you run the risk of decay and root rot infecting the parts of the tree you meant to keep. So it is better to just remove a percentage of the trees roots, based on the percentage of reduction of the foliage removed. And instead have it use its energy in struggling to grow new roots, rather than using that same energy struggling at fighting root rot and decay under the soil. As well then you've already allowed death to creep in. In this case natural death has already arrived. So why not give all of its life energy to new life...

Thanks for the great video. I'm definitely going to be doing this to one of my dying mamas. Quick question - at 4:25, you were showing pups you were growing from a dead mama, and the two on the right were growing elongated and skinny. I have a mama that's growing a couple of pups like this. Is there something I can do to get the elongated pups to thicken and grow more typically?

This is very helpful! I got a brom from work that they said was no longer useful. It still had some colour so I kept it but then it started to rot and die in the center. I pulled that part out and now it has 3 pups! Can I trim mama’s leaves shorter without causing damage to the core?
@PictureMaria1
@PictureMaria1 3 жыл бұрын
Awesome and so glad to hear it. You can definitely trim the leaves back on mama. The energy source is the stem or rhizome area. I’ve had mamas completely die back and just as long as you have a healthy stem/rhizome it has the potential of growing more pups. Thanks for watching and HAPPY GROWING!
